Internet in the UAE: choosing the best option for tourists. Additional information about the UAE Cellular communications in the UAE

I visited the UAE from 06 to 14 May 2016. I decided to share the accumulated useful information with other tourists. All information is mainly focused on tourists from Ukraine.

For those who want to be always in touch and at the same time not spend a lot of money on it, there are some tips:

When traveling abroad, it is advisable to turn on voice mail and record a message with information about how to contact you (SMS, mail, Viber, Skype).

The phones must have a balance of at least the cost of one minute of conversation in roaming for MTS (about UAH 30), and at least 2 minutes for Kyivstar (about UAH 60), otherwise your phones will be silent. You will not be able to receive calls or SMS.

Turn off your phone's cellular data connection, otherwise you can get money.

It is more profitable to make calls to Ukraine using VoIP telephony. The cost of a minute of conversation is about 0.13 euros. It is impractical to send SMS from abroad through a VoIP provider, since not all SMS reach recipients in Ukraine, and the money is charged for sending. In addition, the sender in your message may indicate the left phone number, or something like: "INFO", even if you have a verified Caller ID.

But VoIP telephony works fine. The best provider in my opinion is Dellmont. You can choose the most favorable tariff for you here: http://abvuk.co.uk.

You can also check the missed numbers for the presence of Viber on the subscriber, and call back from him.

In the UAE and China, local ISPs block voice communication via Viber and WhatsApp (the call is in progress, but it will not work). Only chat works. In the UAE, Skype works without problems, and voice communication and chat.

For airports and baggage:

At Boryspil airport, it is not allowed to take liquids with a volume of more than 100 ml per person into the aircraft cabin. Also, the maximum allowable weight for free transportation of one piece, in the luggage compartment is 23 kg, in hand luggage is 7 kg. In Dubai, no more than 100 ml of liquid with you is also allowed, but in reality you can carry a couple of 0.5 liter bottles in your hand luggage. Control is not as tight as in Boryspil. Scanning of luggage and hand luggage is done only at the airport of departure, at the airport of arrival the exit is free.

We flew from Terminal D. It is possible to unload the luggage and drop off passengers near terminal D right next to the entrance. The entrance is on the second level (you need to go to the bridge). It is possible to pick up luggage and passengers from Terminal D only from the nearest parking lot at the entrance to the terminal. At the entrance to the parking lot, press the red button on the barrier and get a ticket. When leaving the parking lot, we present the ticket to the parking lot and pay for the duration of the parking lot. Up to 10 minutes parking is not paid, from 11 minutes a tariff for 1 hour of parking is charged (about 30 UAH). The cheapest parking is located near Terminal F, the cost of parking is 35 UAH. per day.

You can take food stretch wrap from home to wrap your luggage yourself at the hotel. At the UAE airport, this service is quite expensive (25 dirhams per seat). Also, weighing one bag costs 2 dirhams.

The beach umbrella was checked in as luggage, but supposedly you can also take it into the cabin of the plane. It fits into a box for bags with a large margin of length.

Holidays in the United Arab Emirates are attractive for Russian tourists for a number of reasons. At the same time, while on a trip, it is important for each person not to lose touch with their loved ones.

The cost of a call from the basic Beeline tariff is 99 rubles / min. from foreign countries. To reduce the financial burden, Beeline offers to use special options, or choose the best tariff plan.

For calls from the UAE home, the Beeline company offers to use such options as:

  • Planet Zero;
  • "My planet";
  • “The most profitable roaming”;
  • or switch to the tariff plan “Everything for 1800 + roaming”.

Reference! Get information about the tariff and connected options - *110*09# - challenge.

Price

Activation of TP “Everything for 1800 + roaming” is free of charge, the subscription fee will be 60 rubles daily. As part of this offer, the subscriber receives 15 GB of Internet and preferential terms for making calls in roaming.

The options are most beneficial when traveling to popular destinations (AEO, Egypt, Tunisia).

The cost of activating the service "My Planet" is 25 rubles. a one-time write-off. The rest is 0 rubles.

How to connect?

The tariff plan "Everything for 1800 + roaming" can be connected through the Personal account or by number 0674002017 .

How to disable?

To disable the "Planet Zero" option, dial *110*331# , and press the call button.

Deactivate “My Planet” - *110*0070# - challenge.

“The most advantageous roaming” does not need to be deactivated, since the fee is charged upon the fact of using the connection in roaming.

Conclusion

Traveling with Beeline is profitable and convenient! The main thing is to choose the necessary service and familiarize yourself with the terms of use before traveling to the UAE.

I will briefly describe the state and some features of the telecommunications services market in the UAE. I do not pretend to consider my post an exhaustive report, I just quote my observations. I arrived in the country in October 2017, so I only have data for a short period of time. Who cares - welcome to cat.

Operators

The telecommunications market in the UAE is divided between two large companies: the oldest and largest Etisalat, which was an absolute monopoly until 2006, and a younger smaller company, Du.

In fact, there is no competition between these companies, since the market is divided geographically and both companies are largely state-owned. Etisalat is headquartered in Abu Dhabi, and Du's headquarters, as you might guess, is in Dubai. Du has its own network of mobile base stations, while the cable infrastructure for the Internet is mostly owned by Etisalat.

Among the smaller operators in the market, the international operator Virgin Mobile has recently been introduced. Etisalat also has a subsidiary provider Swyp, offering tariff plans for mobile Internet and Wi-Fi hotspot networks.

Mobile communications and tariffs

Immediately after arriving in the UAE, I decided to get my own mobile number and Internet access, so as not to be tied to an access point in the hotel. First of all I went to Etisalat for a tariff package. Unfortunately, six months ago I did not save the tariff data. It seems to me that now in many tariff plans the volume of traffic has increased.

Let's see what tariff plans are available at the moment. Prices in local currency - United Arab Emirates dirham, official designation - AED. Dirham to US dollar rate: 3.66 AED = 1 USD.

Tourist rates Etisalat and Du

If you come as a tourist, you may need a guest rate plan. It will cost about AED 55 per week, up to AED 100 in two weeks. The amount of packet data is small.

Tourist rates

As you can see, the travel rates are not very generous. Recently friends came to visit me, it turned out to be more profitable for them to use the roaming of Ukrainian operators.

Communication for regular subscribers

If you need a connection on an ongoing basis, then you can choose from various options for prepaid and contract rates. Rates range from AED 50 to AED 1000 per month. Package data volume from 500 MB to 100 GB per month. In addition, the tariff package may include minutes for calls within the country, minutes for international calls, "flexible minutes" (for calls within the country and international calls to a wide range of countries) and access time to Wi-Fi points in public places. We are not talking about unlimited mobile internet yet.

In order not to feel severely disadvantaged and to have several gigabytes of mobile traffic per month, you will have to pay about 150 AED (40 USD). A connection fee is also charged. To use the minimum tariff for 50 AED, I had to pay another 55 AED for connection. It's funny, but even after that, I could not call a taxi by phone, since calls to toll numbers are charged separately and are not included in flexible minutes.

If you buy a SIM card, then do not forget to take a document with you: either a passport or an Emirates ID. A very important point: your number is here yours for a long time, the law obliges operators to keep your number with you when you change your service provider, if you want to exercise this right.

Prepaid plans for Etisalat, Du and Virgin Mobile

Etisalat

Virgin mobile

The Virgin Mobile operator is represented only by prepaid plans. To become their client, you need to install the application, choose a phone number, make a tariff plan, order a SIM card, which will be delivered to you by an Indian courier on a motorcycle within an hour.

Contract tariff plans

If you need a contract plan, keep in mind that the typical contract term here is 24 months.

Etisalat

Home Internet and tariffs

Internet access services for home users are usually provided along with IPTV and a wired home telephone. When connected, you get a Wi-Fi provider-branded access point (in my case, it's D-Link DIR-850L), a TV-Box and a regular phone with a cordless handset. Tariff plans without additional services do not allow significant savings, while they are much less convenient.

Etisalat

As you can see, the prices are high, and the speed is not very good. So a basic package of services with a connection speed of 20 Mbps costs 360 AED per month (100 USD), for an additional 100 AED per month you can take a "speed booster" that increases the connection speed, for example, from 20 to 50 Mbps, from 50 up to 100 Mbps, respectively. Upload speed on most tariffs is 20-25% of download speed.

The connection contract also has a term of 24 months, in case of early disconnection before the expiration of the first 2 years, you will have to pay a penalty. But the operators offer the possibility of transferring the contract to a new address, if their network is there, so that when you change your place of residence within the country, it is not necessary to terminate the contract with the provider.

Restrictions

Internet providers in the UAE are blocking access to a number of resources. Most of the restrictions are dictated by the law, but there are also some providers who do their own thing.

What is prohibited and blocked by law

- Sites of unwanted political organizations.
- Porn sites and similar sites are prohibited by law, as pornography is contrary to the state religion.
- Some other sites are also not welcome there. It is curious that although VK is open, internal videos from VK are blocked. I believe that the reason for this is in the previous paragraph.

This is what censorship looks like here.

Audio and video calls over the Internet using VoIP applications are blocked. The UAE has a law, following which, the provision of telecommunications services is licensed. In turn, Internet calls are equated to this type of service. So calls to Skype, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger and other programs are blocked. However, in the chat mode and sending multimedia messages, all these applications work without problems. Please note that FaceTime is not available on iPhones and iPads in devices for the local market and it is not offered to install it directly through the AppStore.

Search engines provide information that previously only calls from applications to landline and mobile phones were blocked, but now all calls from application to application are blocked. Interestingly, until the very end of 2017, Skype was an exception when using a fixed connection.

It is possible that some concessions apply at airports and hotels. For example, some say that Skype calls work in hotels.

At the same time, video chats in online games also fell under the distribution.

A spokesperson for the Emirates Safer Internet Society explains that these blocks are designed to keep children safe and protected from various online threats. And he has no intentions to lift these restrictions, since encrypted online calls will serve criminals and anti-social elements. We've already heard something like this somewhere. But in neighboring Saudi Arabia, in the summer of 2017, a similar restriction was canceled.

With regard to VPN use, the UAE Cybercrime Law and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) position is that these services are legal in themselves, but using them to circumvent restrictions would be a serious violation.

Amateur providers

The situation with torrents is ambiguous. On the one hand, the law in the UAE does not prohibit torrenting technology, leaving the issue of copyright compliance on the conscience of users. On the other hand, some Etisalat customers have complained about the inability to download torrents at some time of the day. In turn, Du's clients write that they do not have such a problem. At least at the moment torrents are working for me. As far as I know, in many countries, providers dislike torrents and are engaged in such an amateur activity.

Also, several years earlier, Du users reported that their HD video on YouTube was slowing down, although the connection speed was higher than necessary, while Etisalat did not have such a problem.

Not without curiosities. For example, the website instagram.com was blocked for a while, although the Instagram application was working through its API. It's funny, since many government organizations and even members of the royal families of the emirates maintain their official pages on Instagram in the UAE.

Etisalat and Du also offer two TRA-compliant applications for Internet calling: BOTIM and C'Me. Formally on Google Play and the AppStore, these applications are free and claim free calls. After launch, both applications offer to purchase Internet Calling Plan at a cost of 50 AED per month for a mobile subscriber or 100 AED per month for a fixed connection, otherwise calls will not be provided.

Judging by user reviews, these programs are far from perfect, and on top of that, they also show ads. Also, these two applications violate the rules of GooglePlay and AppStore, requiring you to pay for your subscription using a third-party method instead of regular payment tools.

Fighting Telecommunications Crime

In local news, you can often read warnings about currently active fraudulent SMS and WhatsApp mailings. Operators and law enforcement are working to combat this activity, so if you are the victim of an online or other communication crime, contact the police.

The UAE government urges not to spread false rumors, not to slander people, and not to voice conflicting and offensive speeches on social networks. It is also not worth criticizing the government.

Service quality

Despite the above limitations, the quality of the services provided is quite high (still, at such prices). Operators in the UAE do not skimp on good infrastructure for fixed and mobile networks. So, in the house where I live, every apartment comes from a GPON provider, and then a twisted pair is wired through the rooms. The wires are neatly hidden in the walls, and Ethernet sockets peep out of the walls.

The Emirates met me with fast LTE, when LTE was not yet supported in Ukraine. The quality of voice calls is also high, especially the coverage with the Etisalat signal even in the multi-level underground parking of the residential complex. Du works well too, but has more indoor reception problems, at least in Abu Dhabi. Virgin Mobile works like Du as it is a Du-based virtual operator.

Communication hall of a residential building, view from the street. Pay attention to cleanliness and order.

Operator base station Du in the form of a palm tree.

Summing up, we can say that the Internet and mobile communications in the UAE are expensive and with some restrictions. At the same time, the services provided are performed with high quality, and the personnel of the operators treat the client with due attention and respect.

Being in the United Arab Emirates, it would be nice to be able to call on your mobile all the time, even better - not to know the limitations of communication. In the article, we will consider the prices of various operators for mobile communication services in the United Arab Emirates.

We will take into account Sim-cards of local operators, as well as roaming operators from Russia and tourist cards of a virtual nature. For those who are too lazy to get acquainted with the numbers and read the conditions, you can immediately go to the "Results" section and find out about all the profitable offers.

Local SIM

In the United Arab Emirates, there are two main operators competing with each other. The first is Etisalat, and the second is Du. For both companies, the homeland is the United Arab Emirates, they do not like outsiders here. Any tourist is allowed to have a SIM card of these operators, but you will need to make an advance payment. On city signs in the UAE, you can see advertisements "Call home for 25 fils" or "36 fils per minute for all internationals." Tourists often buy for this advertisement and rush to get SIM cards. Often after buying SIM cards of such a plan, disappointment comes. In fact, only Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Pakistan and Egypt benefit from the use of operators Du and Etisalat.

Most of the population of the emirates are immigrants from these countries of the world, and this advertisement is made for them. For Russia, calls to such operators do not look cheap. You can call Russia with Etisalat for 1.2 dirhams per minute, for du - 1.26 dirhams per minute. One dirham at the time of this writing is equal to 17 rubles, from which we conclude that this is an expensive connection.

A local SIM card will be useful when using it in the territory of the Emirates, with its help you can book a table in a cafe or restaurant, call a taxi, make an insurance deal, buy a ticket for sightseeing. A colorful example is Burj Khalifa, you often cannot find tickets to this place at the box office, so it is better to make a purchase on the website.

Du has a Tourist Plan for tourists. For such a tariff, you will need to pay 55 dirhams (and another 5% VAT). As a result, you will have 20 minutes for local calls, 20 SMS, and 200 MB of Internet traffic. The package is valid for 7 days, which is often enough for tourists. The most valuable is a discounted voucher of AED 1,500. As a result, you get the following discounts:

20% - for UBER taxi rides (4 times)

50% - for renting regular cars with Dollar Rent A Car, 30% - for the rest

Discounts for viewing interesting places in Dubai or Abu Dhabi at the expense of the company "ENTERTAINER go"

If the tariff is used wisely, then tourists can save well, even more than the 55 dirhams that are included in the cost of the tariff.

Use of (tourist) virtual plan operators

There are some operators who do not need their own towers for communication, they use the networks of other operators. Such operators are called "virtual". People often hear about an acceptable price for international calls when using such operators, but this case is clearly not for the Emirates. Consider the existing options for Russians:

  • Teletie - $ 2.75 per minute;
  • EuroSim - $ 2.6 per minute;
  • Goodline - $ 0.95 per minute, $ 0.15 per call;
  • SimTravel - $ 0.55, $ 0.15 per incoming;
  • GlobalSIM - $ 1.25, $ 0.65 per incoming;

It is evident from these figures that there are no real lucrative offers. Goodline and SimTravel can be used somehow for incoming calls. However, the connection of such operators is very unreliable, often it turns out to be inaccessible, so you need such a connection?

Below we will talk about operators from Russia and their roaming conditions, there are more interesting offers.

Roaming

Russia is often the subject of discussion, there is a lot of talk about inflated roaming prices in this country. As practice shows, in the UAE it is beneficial to call from a Russian telecom operator while in roaming.

MTS

If you do not have any options, then a minute of communication on the phone will cost 250 rubles, and the cost of an SMS message will be 19 rubles. Nevertheless, MTS has many options to make communication cheaper. There are SMS packages, 50 SMS can be bought for 500 rubles, 100 SMS for 700 rubles. If you are planning to exchange SMS messages, then these options may be suitable.

"Zero without borders"- difficult to calculate. For the first 10 minutes, the cost of a minute will be 25 rubles per minute, and 2-5 minutes of outgoing minutes will cost 25 rubles. All other minutes will cost 250 rubles per minute. In addition, connecting the option costs 95 rubles. This is a disadvantageous option, even a terrible one.

"Free travel" Is an option that deserves attention. For its purchase, you will have to pay 190 rubles. in a day. The first 60 minutes will be free, whether they are incoming or outgoing. 61 and subsequent minutes will cost 10 rubles per minute. If you use all the minutes to the maximum, then the cost of 1 minute of conversation will be 3.2 rubles. per minute. This is the best offer of all. This option is well suited for tourists who communicate a lot. But not all people are used to communicating, someone just needs to ask "how are you" and tell about their impressions of the day. Such people will not need more than 5 minutes a day. To enable this option, you need to dial the command: * 111 * 943 #. This can also be done in the UAE. On arrival at your homeland, do not forget to disable this option, otherwise you will still pay 190 rubles. in a day.

Tariff plan "Smart Zabugorische" and the option "Zabugorische"

Both the option itself and the tariff are similar. You will have to pay 290 rubles for using them. in a day. You will be credited with 100 incoming and outgoing minutes of free use per day. The total number of minutes should not go beyond the basic package of the tariff, for Smart Zabugorishche - the limit is 350 minutes per week, for Smart mini - 350 per month, Smart Top - 3000 per month.

If you spend all 200 minutes, you get an extremely low price - 1.5 rubles per minute.

It is hard to believe that someone, while on vacation, will communicate by phone for 3.5 hours a day, and there will be no time left for rest.

If you carry on conversations for 60 minutes per day with this rate, then the price of a minute will be 4.8 rubles. "Free travel" in this case will be more profitable.

Beeline

From the first minute of the conversation, an incoming or outgoing call will have to pay 200 rubles. The subscriber receives a package of 10 minutes. Starting from 11 minutes, the price of a minute will be 10 rubles. As you can see, "free travel" is more profitable, since there you will get 60 minutes for 190 rubles. Outgoing SMS will cost 20 rubles, and there is no way to make it cheaper.

Megaphone

Without any options, the cost for all calls will be 199 rubles. per minute. The price of outgoing SMS messages is 25 rubles.

Connecting option "The whole world", you will have to pay 99 rubles. in a day. You will receive 40 free incoming minutes. Outgoing minute - 199 rubles. This option will be beneficial if you don't bother with outgoing calls.

Option "Around the world"

The cost of activating the option will cost 15 rubles, 9 rubles per day will be charged for using the service. The cost of incoming / outgoing calls will be 19 rubles per minute. The price for an outgoing SMS is 14 rubles.

The option is simply useless, it is better to use a SIM card from Beeline, where a minute will cost 10 rubles.

"Packages of minutes"

By paying 829 rubles, the cost of a minute will be 3 times cheaper. Buying a package of 25 minutes, the price will drop from 199 to 100 rubles. By purchasing a package of 50 minutes, the price will drop to 95 rubles. per minute. Also a useless option.

Tele 2

The cost for all calls will be 35 rubles. per minute, SMS - message is estimated at 12 rubles. Not the best offer, but the Tele-2 operator has the option "Conversations Without Borders"... You will have to pay 5 rubles a day for it. Incoming calls will cost 5 rubles per minute. Outgoing calls will cost 35 rubles. per minute. If you do not make plans for a long communication, then this option may suit you. The option is enabled by command * 143 * 0 #. It is beneficial to call the subscriber and quickly reset it, because you will have to pay 5 rubles for an incoming call. per minute. Turn off the service when you arrive home.

Outcomes

  1. If it is important for you to call from 40 to 60 minutes per day, then it is better to connect MTS, use the "Free travel" option
  2. If you plan to talk for 2-3 minutes a day, and the subscriber has the opportunity to re-dial you, then it is better to use Tele-2 and the "Conversation without Borders" option
  3. If you are interested in texting using SMS, then connect SMS packages to MTS, you can connect 50 or 100 SMS

Important! If you do not need mobile Internet in the Emirates, it is better to turn off the ability to transfer data so that unplanned expenses do not appear. If you do not, your device might be downloading updates, asking for a weather forecast, and so on. To call from the UAE, you need to dial: +7 [operator or city code in Russia] Subscriber number. Roaming in any operator is automatically enabled.

Mobile internet in the UAE is still relatively expensive. This is most likely due to the fact that until 2006, Etisalat was the only organization providing mobile services in the state.

There was no competition, and there was no cheap internet in the Emirates.

Today, the Du company also operates in the mobile communications market, which in 2012 was recognized as the best mobile operator in the Middle East.

The tariff will be significantly lower than any of the proposals of Ukrainian operators.

Free internet in the UAE: WiFi in hotels and cafes

There is an opinion that many hotels provide their guests with access to free WiFi networks and distribute very high-quality Internet in the UAE, but as practice shows, this is not always the case. If the Internet in the hotel is free, then it can only be called good at a stretch. Usually, the Internet in hotels is paid and for a week of access it is quite possible to spend more than $ 50.

Most cafes, malls, restaurants provide access to WiFi networks, but it is also, in most cases, paid.

Strict internet censorship laws

When surfing the Internet, you need to remember that the Emirates have strict Internet censorship laws.

Websites belonging to the following categories are automatically blocked:

- Resources, the content of which is contrary to Islamic ethics and morality. Dating sites, sites of financial pyramids;

- Resources, the content of which offends the feelings of believers;

- Sites that allow users to bypass TRA restrictions;

- Emirates Internet resources containing programs that can harm users: phishing programs, hacker tools, spyware;

- Sites with gambling, casinos;

- Resources, the content of which provides information on the acquisition, production and distribution of illegal drugs;

Also, in the Emirates, access to many VOIP programs (Skype, WhatsApp, etc.) is closed.

If you want to have a relatively cheap internet in the UAE, then you will need to purchase one of the SIM cards indicated in this review.

You can connect daily, weekly and monthly tariff plans for the Emirates Internet. Also, for an additional fee of AED 2 per day, you can get the opportunity to use communication programs (WhatsApp, BBM, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn).

DU

Du Is a brand of EITC (Emirates Integrated Company), which has been operating in the telecommunications market in the UAE since 2006. The official website is www.du.ae Du's market share in the Emirates is approximately 48%.
