By default, all editions of Windows 10 present Edge browser... It can be used, configured, or removed from your computer.

What's new in Microsoft Edge

In all previous versions Windows default browser was present Internet Explorer different versions... But in Windows 10, it was replaced by a more perfect one. Microsoft Edge... It has the following advantages over its predecessors:

  • new EdgeHTML engine and JS interpreter - Chakra;
  • stylus support that allows you to draw on the screen and quickly share the resulting image;
  • support voice assistant(only in those countries where the voice assistant itself is supported);
  • the ability to install extensions that increase the number of browser functions;

  • the ability to run PDF files directly in the browser;
  • reading mode, which removes all unnecessary from the page.

Edge has been completely redesigned. It was simplified and designed according to modern standards. Edge has retained and added functions that can be found in all popular browsers: saving bookmarks, customizing the interface, saving passwords, scaling, etc.

Browser stopped starting or slows down

Edge may stop starting when:

  • there is not enough RAM to run it;
  • the program files are damaged;
  • browser cache is full.

First, close all applications, or better, immediately restart your device to RAM freed. Secondly, use the instructions below to eliminate the second and third cause.

Restart your computer to free up RAM

The browser may hang for the same reasons that prevent it from starting. If you encounter such a problem, then also restart your computer, and then use the instructions below. But first, make sure the sag is not due to an unstable internet connection.

This method is suitable if it is possible to launch a browser. Otherwise, first reset your browser files using the following instruction.

What to do if all else fails

If none of the above methods helped to solve the problem with the browser, there are only two ways out: reinstall the system or find an alternative. The second option is much better as there are many free browsers far superior to Edge. For example, start using Google chrome or a browser from the Yandex company.

Basic settings and capabilities

If you decide to start working with Microsoft Edge, then first of all you need to learn about its basic settings and functions that allow you to personalize and change the browser for each user individually.

There is no way to bulk delete browser bookmarks in Microsoft Edge, but you can clear all bookmarks by deleting the spartan.edb file in the Edge location folder in your user profile. Here's how to do it.

Delete all favorites in Edge

Close Microsoft Edge, open File Explorer and paste the following folder path in the address bar and press Enter:

% LocalAppData% \ Packages \ Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe \ AC \ MicrosoftEdge \ User \ Default

In the window that opens, you need to delete or rename two folders, namely "DataStore" and "Favorites".

DataStore folder contains spartan.edb a database file that stores all your bookmarks. In folder " Favorites"keeps separate .url files for the Edge favorites bar.

Refresh your cache

Now open Edge, don't be surprised if bookmarks still show up in the favorites bar. They will still appear in the favorites, as they are cached, this is the responsibility of the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Classes \ Local Settings \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ AppContainer \ Storage \ microsoft.microsoftedge_8wekyb3d8bbwe \ MicrosoftEdge \ FavOrder \ FavBarCache

All you have to do is click on the hub button (Favorites, Reading List, History, Downloads) once and then close the Edge browser. Open Edge again and you should see an empty favorites bar.

The new Microsoft Edge browser introduced in Windows 10 and evolving is a great browser option for many users (see Microsoft Edge Browser Overview), but some common tasks like importing and especially exporting bookmarks can cause problems.

How to import bookmarks

In order to import bookmarks from another browser into Microsoft Edge, just click on the settings button in the upper right, select "Options", and then - "View favorites settings."

The second way to enter the bookmark options is to click on the content button (with the image of three lines), then select "Favorites" (an asterisk) and click "Options".

In the options, you will see the "Import favorites" section. If your browser is listed, just check it and click Import. After that, the bookmarks will be imported into Edge, keeping the folder structure.

What to do if the browser is not listed or your bookmarks are stored in separate file previously exported from some other browser? In the first case, first use your browser's tools to export bookmarks to a file, after which the steps will be the same for both cases.

Microsoft Edge doesn't support importing bookmarks from files for some reason, but you can do the following:

Import your bookmarks file into a browser supported for import in Edge. The ideal candidate for importing bookmarks from files is Internet Explorer (you have it on your computer, even if you don't see the icon on the taskbar - just launch it by entering Internet Explorer in the taskbar search or via Start - Standard Windows). Where the import is in IE is shown in the screenshot below. After that, import the bookmarks (in our example from Internet Explorer) into Microsoft Edge in a standard way as described above.

As you can see, importing bookmarks is not so difficult, but with export, things are different.

Edge does not provide a means to save bookmarks to a file or otherwise export them. Moreover, even after the appearance of support for extensions by this browser, among available extensions nothing appeared to simplify the task (at least at the time of this writing).

A bit of theory: starting with Windows versions 10 1511 Edge bookmarks are no longer stored as shortcuts in a folder, they are now stored in a single spartan database file. edb located in C: \ Users \ username \ AppData \ Local \ Packages \ Microsoft. MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe \ AC \ MicrosoftEdge \ User \ Default \ DataStore \ Data \ nouser1 \ 120712-0049 \ DBStore \

There are several ways to export bookmarks from Microsoft Edge.

The first is to use a browser that has the ability to import from Edge. At this point in time, they definitely know how:

If you wish, after importing your favorites with one of the browsers, you can save Microsoft Edge bookmarks to a file using this browser.

Second way of export Microsoft bookmarks Edge - third party free utility EdgeManage (formerly Export Edge Favorites), available for download from the developer's site Http: // www. emmet-gray. com / Articles / EdgeManage. html

If you still have questions regarding "Favorites" in Microsoft Edge - ask them in the comments, I will try to answer.

It's obvious that MS moved away from the folder the chosen one, used in IE, which was installed in % UserProfile% with Edge .

I found some information about this on the internet, meaning it should be located here -% localappdata% \ Packages \ Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe \ AC \ MicrosoftEdge \ User \ Default \ Favorites.

For some reason, mine is not located for me. I searched everything (folders, registry, online via search queries and reddit etc. and I haven't found anything to help me.

Has anyone overcome this issue and are willing to help me?

3 Solutions collect form web for “Win10 Favorites Folder Location - Edge”

Let me shed some light on this topic.

Internet Explorer

  • Internet Explorer almost always used C: \ Users \% Username% \ Favorites to save favorites
  • These favorites were stored as files
  • Edge has never used this location and does not share favorites with Internet Explorer at all

Original edge

  • Early Edge version in the original version of "RTM" Windows 10 stores favorites as files stored in 11 folders in depth:

C: \ Users \% USERNAME% \ AppData \ Local \ Packages \ Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe \ AC \ MicrosoftEdge \ User \ Default \ Favorites

  • you can use File Explorer in this place to edit, add, remove favorites, but it took a registry change to make a lot of edits to Edge

Current edge

  • The current version of Edge (from November Windows updates 10) now uses the database at:

C: \ Users \% UserName% \ AppData \ Local \ Packages \ Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe \ AC \ MicrosoftEdge \ User \ Default \ DataStore \ Data \ nouser1 \ 120712-0049 \ DBStore \ spartan.edb

  • You can no longer use File Explorer to manage your favorites
  • There may be favorites left in the "old" location, but they are no longer used. (This is why when people see these files, they notice that they are not up to date).

I just made a favorite in Edge, it was saved to:

% UserProfile% \ AppData \ Local \ Packages \ Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe \ AC \ MicrosoftEdge \ User \ Default \ Favorites

If you save to the favorites bar, they are placed in the Links folder:

% UserProfile% \ AppData \ Local \ Packages \ Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe \ AC \ MicrosoftEdge \ User \ Default \ Favorites \ Links

You will need to show hidden folders to see the AppData folder if you plan to click on folders through Windows Explorer

Do it:

The same question here as before was in the Edge favorites listed above, but they are now gone. We dug and found them in

% LOCALAPPDATA% \ Packages \ Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe \ RoamingState

But they are now .json files like text and a mess.

The user said that he found the icon files for the url here:

% LOCALAPPDATA% \ Packages \ Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe \ AC \ MicrosoftEdge \ User \ Default \ DataStore \ Data \ nouser1 \ 120712-0049 \ Favorites

Then I called the service technical support MS, but they couldn't find them either! We created a new user account and put it in one URL as a favorite and could never find it anywhere, although it appears in Edge in the Favorites list. So even the tech guys can't find where they are going. They are working on it for more high level and should call back.

Here are some places on MS Answer that say:

Methods for saving the Edge browser web bookmarks before reinstalling. Synchronizing data with account Google. Using a file of type Bookmarks.

Removing web bookmarks after reinstallation

This material may be useful for those who in the near future intend to reinstall their operating system Windows, either wants to uninstall and then reinstall its browser, but leave all important web bookmarks in place.

Most users keep the most essential bookmarks in the favorites section. In order for these web elements to remain in place after you reinstall the system itself, you will have to use one of several techniques described below.

Saving bookmarks through synchronization with a Google account

All bookmarks necessary for the user can be easily saved in the Google account. At the same time, the web elements themselves can be activated on almost any PC or laptop. First of all, you will need:

Working with the Bookmarks file

If you do not have a desire to create a Google “account”, you can use an alternative option.

  1. Use the Internet Bookmark Manager by simultaneously pressing three keys (Ctrl, Shift and O).
  2. We select an item to arrange the elements. Export web bookmarks to the html file system.
  3. The user will be prompted to save the file that stores the web elements. In this case, the user will be prompted to choose the way of storing information. Create the final folder, change the name (or keep the same) and click to save.
  4. To activate the materials themselves, you will have to import web-bookmarks from file system html.
