OnePlus smartphones. Smartphones OnePlus One Plus 5 Smartphone Full Review

From year to year, OnePlus pleases with the release of the most sophisticated and relatively affordable flagships. In 2017, the OnePlus 5 saw the light of day, which was heavily criticized immediately after its release. And all because of software errors and flaws. Two months after the release, the dust settled, several updates came out and the smartphone became uncompromisingly cool.

Many people find and read reviews with one goal - to understand whether it is worth buying this or that gadget. And right now I will make it easier for those who are eyeing the hero of today's review.

OnePlus 5 Buy definitely worth it!

And here's a quick clarification. If you need the coolest device on the market, but your own oil well is still under development, then you should only buy OnePlus 5 and only it.

Anyone who is interested in details, details and the very nuances, welcome to the main part of the review.

Equipment

The box will not surprise those who have owned at least one smartphone from 1+. We have everything the same: thick, high-quality cardboard in white and red colors.

New arrivals will be extremely interested in everything, since unboxing any generation of OnePlus is almost an adventure. Here the box is also stylish, and everything inside is furnished with love. With love for gadgets and quality things, of course.

  • power supply with support fast charging DachCharge (5V and 4A)
  • USB Type-C cable
  • paper clip with a smile
  • postcard with the address of the head of the company to the fans
  • branded stickers and, of course, all sorts of different pieces of paper

Enjoyed unboxing? This is just the beginning.

Design, never "borrowed". Never!

All this, of course, is very strange. OnePlus has always followed its own path, adhered to its concept in design, tried all kinds of materials, including sandpaper in the second version, and therefore their devices never looked like competitors.

This is OnePlus 2

The fourth generation of the smartphone (yes, they do not like the four in China, so this figure was stupidly promoted) suspiciously strongly resembles the iPhone 7 Plus. Especially if they took him and rounded the corners a little more.

Apart from the similarities and differences with competitors, the OnePlus 5 looks very good.

Better yet, it lies in the hand. Believe me, the picture does not convey the sensations that you experience when you take the device in your hand.

Here's what comes to mind when you hold a smartphone in your hands:

"It's thin, big, lightweight, made of metal!"

A protective film is glued on the screen directly from the factory. She spoils absolutely everything, because safety glass at 1 + 5 it is strongly rounded at the edges, but here a thick film with its rough and sharp corners makes it difficult to use the smartphone in the form in which the designers intended it.

However, thrifty people still shouldn't take it off, even though the protective glass (5th "gorilla", for a second) perfectly resists scratches, abrasions and other damages.

Under the screen, as always, there is a fingerprint scanner, surrounded by two touch buttons. The latter have their own backlighting, but it is very dim. It could have been made brighter.

The scanner, as always, works lightning fast and 11 out of 10 attempts are successful. I'm serious!

Camera capabilities

You expect improvements on all fronts from the next generation model, bug fixes and so on. And in part, the top five received some positive changes. Let's sort it out in order.

Front-camera

Video recording

Filmed excellent quality 4K video. Everything is the same in the new product, except that the optical stabilization has been removed. Now we only have digital stabilization, which compensates for shaking by cropping out part of the frame. And then! This functionality was not added immediately, until the newly minted owners of the device raised a fuss about this.

Unfortunately, 5 still shoots Slow Motion video (120 fps) in 720p resolution only. Full HD was not delivered, despite the fact that the same iPhone 7 set the fashion in this direction last fall.

Autonomy

The smartphone has a 3,300 mAh battery, which is 100 “swings” less than its predecessor (but the novelty has become 1 mm thinner, uii!). The updated smartphone received a 10-nanometer chipset, therefore, power consumption should have decreased by 40 percent.

In any case, we have a smartphone that works stably all day long. If you drive it both in the tail and in the mane (without games), then it will work from 8 am to 9 pm, and the screen glow time will be 4 hours and 20 minutes.

The real pride of the company is the proprietary fast charging Dash Charge. For example, in 30 minutes, the smartphone gains a charge from 0 to 60%. Impressive? Not that word!

The battery gains 100 percent in exactly one and a half hours. The results are great.

By the way, for fast charging to work, you only need to use the supplied power supply and cable. The rest of the accessories will charge the smartphone much more slowly.

Sound quality

The multimedia speaker is loud enough and the quality is average. Of course, there are no basses or hints of them, but the main thing is that the sound does not wheeze or creak.

Unfortunately, OxygenOS does not own application to play audio files. Its place was occupied by Play Music from Google, which is extremely persistent in offering to subscribe to the service. It pissed me off at first, but now I'm thinking of agreeing. Finished off, bastards!

The sound in the headphones is good. I have not heard anything extraordinary, but there is nothing wrong either. Everything is at the level of most competitors.

By the way, the device supports aptX and aptX HD codecs, that is, with wireless headphones that are friendly with the same protocols, the sound quality will be hoo.

What I especially like about smartphones OnePlus Are gestures on the locked screen.

Here is one of them, my favorite.

In the car, I listen to music from my smartphone. The five is fixed on dashboard and is connected to the car's standard acoustics. The coolest thing is that with the OnePlus 5 I don't need to unlock my smartphone, open the music player, press the Play button - the whole thing replaces one single gesture. It is enough to swipe the screen off with two fingers from top to bottom and the playback starts. To pause, you need to do the same; to switch tracks, draw a ">" or "<».

Brilliant! And it does not distract from the road at all.

Outcome

At first I liked everything very, very much. I was delighted with the smartphone, but only until the moment when I opened the photos from the cameras of the device on the computer.

OnePlus 5- this is a top-end flagship, which costs about $ 150-200 cheaper than the same. However, he removes about the same worse.

We place all points on and.

Do you want top-end hardware? Perfect software optimization? And in order not to spend 40+ thousand rubles on everything, then choose OnePlus 5. The current price tag now, by the way, is $ 460 or about 27,000 rubles. I bought a smartphone, no problem, so I can safely recommend it. If anything, use the ONHSCK coupon to get a discount. Does not work? Try this one - OPBKB.

Do you want top-end hardware? Not the most perfect, but still a great shell? Buy. It can now be purchased in the region of 40 thousand rubles in gray supplies.

Do you want your smartphone to be cool from all sides? Then there is one option -. This Taiwanese was and remains the best flagship of this year in terms of price-quality ratio. In gray deliveries, the price is around 40 thousand, the official price is from 44,990 rubles.

Still, I liked 1 + 5.

This is such a cool device that it gets boring to use it over time. I'm serious. I have been like this with and now the same thoughts appear again.

Nothing slows down, applications launch lightning fast, the design is excellent, and for all its shortcomings, the camera still satisfies most of my photo needs. As if you got the perfect smartphone, you use it, you are happy, but what next? No adventure for you.

Starting with this review, we introduce a separate device rating. If you see the “Super G Recommends” stamp on the main photo, know that this is one of the best smartphones in its category.

The OnePlus 5 design is a blend of the OnePlus 3T and iPhone 7 Plus bloodlines. Moreover, the latter is clearly more. The Chinese diligently demonstrated how they went through dozens of concepts, struggled with a choice, did not sleep at night - and still came to the Apple style. What a coincidence!

But the first time you take the OnePlus 5 in your hand, you understand - it's different. Sleeker, more accurate. Ironically, the "five" seems more premium and expensive than the iPhone 7 Plus. Assembly, quality of materials - everything is up to par.

It's nice to return to metal after slippery glass flagships - HTC U11, Sony Xperia XZ Premium. Let this be an indirect merit of Apple, but thanks to OnePlus for making the case from aluminum with a matte finish. For a week of not the most gentle operation, not a single scratch appeared.

The OnePlus 5 is sold in two variants: dark gray and black. The first has 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of physical memory, the second has 8 and 128 GB, respectively. The colors are very similar, and here's a spoiler for you: there is no point in overpaying for an older model.

With a screen diagonal of 5.5 "we get almost a" shovel ", but the shovel is comfortable and reliable. The dimensions are almost a copy of OnePlus 3T. The smartphone is thin - 7.25 mm - and rounds around the edges, so it fits well into the palm. for this size. I didn’t like only the volume rocker: thin and sharp. Holding in the left hand, you have to press with your fingernail.

The mode switch has not gone anywhere. The thing is convenient: I went to a meeting - set "Do not disturb", went to bed - turned on "Silent". The modes are configured, in fact, like much else in a smartphone: indicator color, vibration strength, etc. That's why OnePlus loves it: the guys unobtrusively add simple but very useful settings.

The home button works like a fingerprint scanner. So fast and accurate that you are amazed. After the Google Pixel and Galaxy S8 Plus sensors, the difference is noticeable: there unlocking occurs with a slight delay, here - instantly.

Three spoons of tar spoil honey:

  1. No water resistance. More precisely, the smartphone is not IP certified and OnePlus does not guarantee water resistance. Judging by the reviews, the case will withstand being hit by jets of water or a walk in the rain, but swimming in the pool will kill it. And for the flagship of 2017, this is a serious omission.
  2. A microSD slot was never added. The minus is insignificant, even 64 GB will be enough for many.
  3. The dual camera module protrudes. This does not affect convenience in any way, but the metal edging can get scratched over time.

As a result, the OnePlus 5 doesn't offer anything new in terms of design. Compared to the OnePlus 3T, the device has lost its identity. Beautiful, practical, but does not leave the feeling of secondary: Apple style shines through in every detail. If you don't have such associations, OnePlus 5 will definitely like it.

Dual camera with dual zoom

The dual camera is the trend of 2017. Someone sets this trend, someone resists. The OnePlus 5 follows the canons of the iPhone 7 Plus: a second camera is needed for zooming and shooting portraits with a blurred background. As in cameras.

photos

photos

In one camera there is a 16-megapixel Sony IMX398 sensor with a pixel size of 1.12 microns and optics with an aperture of f / 1.7. It's a wide-angle camera, and the OnePlus 5 shoots with it by default. The second, with a shorter focal length, received a 20-megapixel Sony IMX350 sensor with a pixel of 1 micron and an aperture of f / 2.6.

In simple terms, the first camera captures more light and detail, the second has a higher resolution. Why is this needed? To get closer to the picture without loss of quality. OnePlus announced a 2x zoom, but did not say how it works. And it works very cleverly.

The maximum optical zoom of the 16-megapixel camera brings objects up to 1.6 times. Everything is super, we do not lose quality. Having reached a crop of 1.6, the module switches to a 20 megapixel camera and uses digital zoom. As a result, at x2 magnification, the quality of the images should not drop. The key word is "must".

No approximation

Zoom x2

Move the slider left and right to compare photos. The left picture is clearly overexposed: highlights, noise. The right one is much darker, but the detail has dropped too. And in both frames, glare from the lanterns is visible.

The fact is that the jump from f / 1.7 to f2.6 is striking, especially in night photographs. The brightness drops, the detail deteriorates, noise creeps from the corners. It is not so noticeable during the day. In addition, the pixel size of the second camera is smaller, which affects the quality even worse.

But the situation is this: people either do not use zoom at all, or use it to the fullest, not paying much attention to quality. There are not many smartphones in the world with optical zoom, and one of them - the OnePlus 5 - does a good job.

Another use for the dual camera is portrait mode. The software determines the distance between the subject and the background, blurring the latter. The work is still crooked: automation often takes hair and clothes for the background, the background for a piece of the object, and the object itself "makes noise" and loses its sharpness. OnePlus promises to fix portrait mode with updates. Apple, over there, is still puffed up.

The zoom also works when shooting video, the maximum resolution is 4K. There is no optical stabilization, only electronic, but it does not work when recording 4K and even FullHD 60 fps. At 30 fps, the electronic one behaves like the EIS in the Google Pixel: smoothly smooths out fluctuations, twitches hysterically when cornering.

OnePlus 5 takes photos on a par with other flagships. In the DxOMark mobile camera rating, it received 87 points. Smaller than the Google Pixel and HTC U11, and larger than the iPhone 7. It's funny that DxOMark itself helped "cut" the software for OnePlus.

During the day, the photo is difficult to distinguish from the same Pixel or Galaxy S8 Plus: bright, sharp, with the right exposure and white balance. HDR comes in handy when shooting against the sun.

The darker, the more often the frames come out blurry and noisy: without optical stabilization, the automatic increases the ISO and increases the shutter speed. But this is not as common as glare from lamps and lanterns. The OnePlus 3T suffered the same, nothing has changed in a year.

The OnePlus 5 lacks optical stabilization. Getting a sharp shot in the dark or capturing smooth video becomes a challenge. Although the camera performs very well, the competition is still better.

The front camera is 16MP like the OnePlus 3T, but the quality is slightly better. Now complete order with sharpness. The quality is not bad, but there is not much to boast about. There is no autofocus, there is HDR - it helps to "pull out" objects in the background.

The screen is inherited

Mobile HDR support? 4K resolution? 18: 9 aspect ratio? Innovation has no place here. The company did not bother with the display: it took the Optic AMOLED matrix from the OnePlus 3T, turned it over and put it in the OnePlus 5.

There were some consequences. When scrolling quickly, a "jelly" effect appears: the image seems to float, vibrate. It's not annoying, you just notice it occasionally - that's all. Many, however, inflate the problem out of this. Don't worry, OnePlus has already promised to fix the jellyfish with software updates.

The colors of the screen are saturated, do not fade when tilted, black is perfect black, this is the merit of AMOLED. The minimum and maximum brightness is okay, enough both in the dark and under the sun. The resolution is FullHD, this is the golden mean for 5.5 ": the battery does not drain, and the detail is high.

The display is covered with Gorilla Glass 5 with a rounded effect. Visually, this smoothes the look, makes it sleeker. There are bezels around the display, but thin. It would be strange to demand framelessness from a smartphone for $ 479.

A protective film with an oleophobic coating is already glued on top of the display. You can peel off the film, there is also a grease-repellent layer under it. This is not Huawei P10, where you removed the film - it was left without the "oleophobic".

The display supports DCI-P3 color gamut. It's somewhere between the cold and oversaturated defaults and the dull sRGB color space. Colors are shifted to warmer hues, making the image appear more cinematic. While DCI-P3 is used in digital cinemas, some Apple equipment, Microsoft Surface Studio computer and Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone.

The screen is just solid. No cool bells and whistles and standard FullHD resolution. Color reproduction and brightness are excellent, but many are confused by the "jelly" effect when scrolling. Ideally, this should not be the case.

Another useful setting is Reading Mode. The image becomes monochrome and changes the white balance depending on the surrounding lighting. The mode is ideal for reading books and can turn on automatically: launched Amazon Kindle or FBReader - the screen turns black and white, turned off - color again. Comfortable.

Fastest in tests and practice

Whatever camera or design OnePlus chooses, hardware has always been top-notch. The OnePlus 5 is no exception. It is the most powerful Android smartphone in the world. On board it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, Adreno 540 graphics and 6/8 GB of RAM. In the performance test, AnTuTu gives 181 thousand points. Compare with competitors:

The difference is not that big, and in some tests, OnePlus even loses. Everything is learned in practice: applications open instantly, switching between them without delay. Even the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus started to slow down over time. Everything is fine here.

The power reserve is enough for games for 1-2 years in advance. WoT: Blitz flies at maximum settings with 16x anti-aliasing, the frame rate does not drop below 60 fps. Asphalt Extreme and the online shooter Guns of Boom don't lag either.

At the same time, OnePlus 5 does not heat up at all. We played the video for 14 hours, played all the games in a row, ran the AnTuTu test three times, and the case remained barely warm or completely cold. Forget throttling. We do not know how OnePlus conjured up the cooling system, but it turned out amazingly.

Which model should you choose: with 6 or 8 GB of RAM? As foreign journalists found out, the extra 2 GB does not affect performance in any way. Only more open programs will stay in the background. Even 4 GB would be enough, but the buyer loves when the technology is crammed to the maximum, and OnePlus takes advantage of this.

Choose the ROM size based on your needs. From experience I will say this: if you listen to music online and sometimes upload photos to the cloud or to a computer, 64 GB will be enough for a couple of years.

Autonomy is excellent

The battery was "cut": it was 3400 mAh in OnePlus 3T, now it is 3300 mAh. But OnePlus 5 lasts 15-20% longer.

Here, and Snapdragon 835 with a 10nm process technology tried, and energy efficient AMOLED with a low resolution, and even memory affected. LPDDR4 was replaced by LPDDR4X with half the power consumption. Plus, OxygenOS has been optimized: the system uses up the charge more intelligently.

The "dry" test showed that the OnePlus 5 plays FullHD video at maximum brightness for 14.5 hours, while the subject lasted 8.5 hours in the Subway Surfers game. An excellent result, on par with the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. Other flagships swallow dust:

With my mode, the OnePlus 5 lasted more than a day. That is, I took it off the gym in the morning and the next day, 5-10% remains by lunchtime. At the same time, LTE, Wi-Fi, GPS are constantly working, social networks are being synchronized, I am constantly recording something, communicating in Telegram and listening to music online. The "clean" time of the screen is 5-5.5 hours.

OnePlus 5 charges very quickly. You just need a special Dash Charge adapter and cable that come with the kit. With them, the battery is charged before our eyes: 50% in 25 minutes, 92% in an hour. Then Dash Charge slows down and "pumps in" the leftovers in another 25 minutes. Total one and a half hours. I even stopped charging my smartphone at night. Why, if I have time before going to work?

The kit is minimal: an adapter, a cable and a photo taken on the OnePlus 5.

How such "doping" affects battery life is not yet clear. One thing is clear: if you forgot the adapter or cable at home, you can say goodbye to fast charging. A brand new Dash Charge kit will cost $ 28 (1,700 rubles) on the OnePlus website. This is excluding shipping costs.

Not the fastest internet and USB

OnePlus 5 supports the LTE Cat.12 standard, the maximum internet speed is 600 Mbps. The new flagships HTC U11, Galaxy S8 or Sony Xperia XZ Premium have a gigabit modem with LTE Cat.16 support. Where the Xperia XZ Premium scored 105Mbps in the Speedtest, the OnePlus 5 only showed 55Mbps. Not enough.

There are also problems with signal reception. On the street, everything is fine, but in the metro, the Internet most often does not work, although the smartphone shows "H +". At the same time, the call quality is good: the sound in the conversational dynamics is clear, the microphones filter out noise well - the interlocutors did not complain.

Tray for SIM cards. As you can see, there is no room for MicroSD.

The disadvantages are smaller, but still the disadvantages are the lack of wireless charging and the old USB 2.0 interface. Not to be confused with the connector, it is USB Type-C here. That is, it looks new, but transfers files slowly. NFC is still here, and Android Pay works on the OnePlus 5. Checked.

High quality sound

The smartphone has one speaker on the bottom. Covering with your hand while playing games or watching a movie is as easy as shelling pears. But the volume margin is impressive, and the quality is not bad.

OnePlus has always had good headphone sound. This is not the level of the musical HTC U11 and Meizu Pro 6 Plus, but it is not inferior to competitors like the Galaxy S8 and LG G6. Music lovers will definitely like it. The main thing is that the 3.5 mm audio jack is in place!

OnePlus 5 is one of the few flagships to receive Bluetooth 5.0. That is, you can stream audio to a pair of wireless speakers or headphones at the same time.

Supported codecs aptX and aptX HD. The difference between them is only in the maximum bitrate - 352 against 576 kbps, but the manufacturer claims: the sound quality is better than on CD.

Positioning

The OnePlus slogan is the same for all devices, they are positioned the same every time and we hear that another “flagship killer” has come out. In practice, this is far from the case, but among technology enthusiasts, OnePlus devices have become widespread and there are several reasons for this. The first is that this device is not for everyone, it is not massive and against its background smartphones from Xiaomi and Meizu are consumer goods, not to mention other companies, for example, Huawei or even more so Samsung. That is, there is a feeling that OnePlus smartphones are only for knowledgeable people. The second reason is that in terms of price / quality ratio, these devices are good and if you do not need a full set of flagship characteristics, then they may suit you perfectly, and the cost will be somewhat lower. This is not to say that OnePlus sells its smartphones for nothing or at some low price, they cost about $ 500 / euro at the time of release, which fits well into the understanding of the flagships from the A-brands, they cost a little more.

Inside OnePlus, a new “victim” is chosen every time, as the previous model OnePlus 3 / 3T borrowed the design from Huawei smartphones, the same shapes and arrangement of elements were easily recognized.

In 2017, the donor for the designer of the five was the iPhone 7 Plus, the same arrangement of elements, a dual camera.

The Chinese are not at all shy about the fact that they lack uniqueness in appearance, rather it is a deliberate copying, which shows against whom they went on a campaign and who and what they want to surprise. Those who buy Chinese smartphones on Android are often consciously or not, but in opposition to Apple and the iPhone, people give a lot of arguments why they do not want to buy the products of an American corporation. It is possible that this is a juxtaposition of two worlds, Android and iOS, but the fact is that with a noticeable difference in cost between the iPhone and other devices, most people choose not the iPhone at all, which is proved by the sales figures.

At the same time, the real competitor to OnePlus is not Apple / Samsung smartphones or Huawei, it is still a direct competitor for Chinese companies, and it sometimes costs more than they do and this affects the perception, there is a feeling of a better product. The price trick has been well known for a long time, it is perfectly applied in practice. Therefore, it is worth considering OnePlus 5 as a device popular in narrow circles, a kind of product for “their own”. Nevertheless, it has certain advantages that may interest a mass consumer, especially when buying a device outside of Russia, when there is an opportunity to save on the price.

Design, dimensions, controls

The theater starts with the hanger, the device always starts with the box and how the accessories are packed, how they look. I have always liked the OnePlus approach, there is simply nothing to complain about, inside the box for the charging compartment and cable, a leaflet with an appeal on behalf of the company and other small things.

It is clear that you will throw the box away or hide it out of sight almost immediately, but it creates a mood and affects the perception of the phone. And this is the right approach.

The device is available in two colors - gold and dark gray. For girls and for everyone else, that is, boys and girls mixed.

From time to time, OnePlus releases limited editions, this is how the JCC + device appeared, but you still cannot find it on sale, so you can consider it a kind of virtual extension of the lineup.

The body is curved at the back to the edges, which makes the phone more comfortable to grip, it does not slip in the hand and is thin enough to fit in a jeans pocket. The size of the smartphone is 154.2x74.1x7.3 mm, weight is 153 grams. For this kind of devices, it is quite lightweight and this is a big plus, since the body is made of anodized aluminum (we are not talking about any series here, it means ordinary aluminum without any 6000 or even more so 7000 series). The reliability of the case is beyond doubt, the paint does not peel off, as sometimes happens on Huawei, everything is reliable here (anodizing is the best option out of all possible and quite expensive).

Inserts for antennas can be seen on the top and bottom ends; in a dark phone they are so successful that you can only see them peering. To my taste, they do not spoil the overall impression of the model, although in gold color they are clearly visible and less successful.

The layout of the controls is standard for OnePlus, it is repeated from model to model.

Above the screen in the upper left corner there is an indicator for missed events; it is not very bright, but well noticeable. In the settings, you can choose the backlight color for various events, there are several such colors.

On the left side there is a paired volume rocker, and a little higher there is a three-position lever, with its help you can turn on the “Do not disturb” mode, or limit notifications only from important applications. The thing is super-convenient, it allows you to immediately achieve the desired result without going into the menu, without turning on the device.

On the right side there is an on / off button, just above the tray for two nanoSIM cards.

At the bottom, you can see the USB Type C connector, speaker output, as well as a 3.5mm jack and microphone. The second microphone is located near the camera on the back panel, it is used when shooting video, and also participates in the noise reduction system during a conversation. The camera itself protrudes from the back, but this does not create any problem.

There is a fingerprint sensor under the screen, it works just fine, the touch is recognized instantly and is in no way inferior to how it happens on the iPhone / Galaxy. In addition to being a fingerprint sensor, you can assign the touch pad to call one of the functions, double or long press is recognized. The pad is not pressed, so it doesn't depend on the effort, but on how long you keep your finger on it. For example, I'm so used to the fact that I can quickly launch the camera on my Galaxy in two clicks on the Home key that I chose the same function here, which is very convenient.

On the sides of the sensor there are touch keys, they have no designations, since in the menu you can swap them, choose the location that is familiar to you.

The only possible disadvantage that you will notice over time is the film on the screen, which is glued at the factory. Despite the fact that there is Corning Gorilla Glass 5, there is also a film. It will scratch over time and then you will have to peel it off, but for several months it will definitely be enough for you with normal handling of the device.

Display

If you were expecting that the screen would somehow change in comparison with the previous model from OnePlus, then in vain, since it is cheaper to use the same matrices, especially since they have proven themselves quite well, if you do not pay attention to some points.

Chinese manufacturers tend to use AMOLED matrices, as this makes their products stand out, gives them a touch of respectability, it turns out that they are no worse than Samsung. Considering that AMOLED matrices have to be bought from Samsung or small manufacturers, they cannot be compared with the latest generations of matrices from Samsung. As a rule, they are distinguished by a noticeably lower brightness, the absence of additional power saving modes. The display in the OnePlus 3 / 3T / 5 is no exception. For marketing reasons, the Optic prefix was added to it, in fact, this means that the company's engineers tweaked the color profiles to their liking and considered it ideal. The screen resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels, 401 ppi with a diagonal of 5.5 inches. Of course, this is not a QHD screen on which you cannot see the picture of the picture and individual dots, here they are practically invisible, but still sometimes you see the picture a little rough. But for its class of devices, this is an excellent screen, in which you can only complain about insufficient brightness during shooting with the camera, the picture looks dark and dim. In all other cases, especially in the room, there is not much to complain about, everything works plus / minus well.

From the menu you can change the screen color scheme to sRGB or DCI-P3, the second one seemed to me much more interesting than the default one. Custom colors are a simple color temperature adjustment and shouldn't be played with, although it's up to everyone to decide for himself.

Another feature of the screen is the display of information from applications at the moment when you sweep your hand over the screen. All notifications are shown on a black background, which is convenient.

The screen remains readable in the sun, there are no special problems (in the camera mode, the screen is very dim again).

From the additional settings, I note the presence of a reading mode (you can add applications for which it will work), as well as a night mode (work on a schedule or automatically, this is a blue filter).

Battery

Since OnePlus uses all the developments of the parent company OPPO, for this device there is a fast charging called DASH, this is a complete analogue of OPPO's VOOC technology. Charging 4A, 5V and allows you to charge the Li-Pol battery in 65-70 minutes. In fifteen minutes you get about 30 percent of the battery charge, which is very convenient. Phones without fast charging have become an anachronism for me, too much time is spent on unnecessary waiting.

The battery capacity is 3300 mAh, which makes you think that the smartphone does not last very long. But this is not the case. In practice, the smartphone works easily for two days under normal load, in particular, up to 5-6 hours of screen operation (it all depends on the brightness of the display, as you understand). For me, this operating time is excellent and sharply distinguishes the model among classmates, it is worth saying thank you to the AMOLED screen for that.

The total video playback time at maximum brightness is about 17 hours.

Communication capabilities

Bluetooth 5.0, NFC support (OnePlus 3 didn't). WiFi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac supported, dual band. Unlike the same OnePlus 3, there are no problems with WiFi, everything works perfectly.

A few words about hardware GPS, it works well, there are no complaints about it. In any case, in conjunction with A-GPS, the device quickly locks onto the terrain and, when using Google Maps, leads the route well.

It was written about LTE frequencies at the very beginning, here I want to add that support for Cat.6 is declared. Frequency aggregation does not work for Cat.6, at least in Russia. If you don't know what it is, then you probably shouldn't be worried about it.

Memory, RAM, chipset, performance

The device is available in two versions - 6/64 GB and 8/128 GB, we had a device with maximum characteristics on our test. Considering that there is a Snapdragon 835 inside, this chipset is one of the most productive, and supplementing it with fast memory, the manufacturer got the maximum performance in all tasks. Moreover, both parrots in synthetic tests and the real performance of this solution are excellent, look at the test results. The main question is whether 128 GB of internal memory is enough for you (as an option 64 GB), but I think everyone is looking for the answer to it himself, since everyone has different scenarios for using smartphones.

Camera

The front camera in this device is 16-megapixel (f / 2.0, EIS, Auto HDR, 1080p), Sony IMX 371 module is used, the image quality is excellent for this type of cameras. There are various face enhancers, which is important for girls.

The main camera is dual, it consists of a Sony IMX 398 module (f / 1.7, EIS, 16 megapixels), as well as a Sony IMX 350 (f / 2.6, 20 megapixels). One lens is wide-angle, the other gives x1.6 optical zoom. Look at the paired shots, each shot with one and the other lenses. Please note that the zoom works worse in the evening, noise appears in the photo, the reason is that the 20-megapixel sensor has a not so fast lens (f / 2.6 versus f / 1.7).

Also, the dual camera system can be used to blur the background, the algorithm works well, but you can see it for yourself.

The camera interface is simple, there is a manual setting (Pro mode), the ability to display a histogram, save images in RAW, and the like.

When shooting video, you can choose FullHD-resolution with an option of 30 or 60 frames per second, for 4K it is only 30 frames per second. The device records sound well thanks to a system of three microphones.

Look at the sample photos compared to Nokia 8, Samsung Galaxy S8 +, I think they will show you that OnePlus does a good job of shooting, the quality of photos is often comparable to the S8 +, although they are noisier in the dark, as well as in semi-dark rooms.

For most casual users, the OnePlus 5's camera capabilities are overwhelming, but also satisfying for those who love photography. In my opinion, the camera is on a par with the best models from Huawei, but Samsung falls a little bit short of the same, and then only in some modes. This is a very, very decent level, so the OnePlus 5 is worth paying attention to in terms of photographic capabilities.

Software

Despite the fact that Android 7.1.1 is installed here, it uses its own Oxygen OS shell, which is minimally different from regular Android, although it has its own developments.

Play Music is used to play music. There is Dirac HD Sound - this is a special software that analyzes and corrects the "color" of the sound. In the sound settings, there is a 7-band equalizer from 68 Hz to 14 kHz. There are also headphone presets.

The sound in the headphones is simple, there is nothing outstanding here. It has its own gallery for viewing photos, which is not bad.

The dictaphone is simple, but it copes with its tasks perfectly.

The file manager is also straightforward, everything is simple and straightforward.

There is nothing to describe in terms of software, everything is extremely simple and understandable.

Impressions

The loudspeaker volume is always enough, the device is audible. There are no particular complaints about the quality of speech transmission, the noise cancellation system works well (there are three microphones here).

In Russia, the official OnePlus 5 are sold for 40 and 45 thousand rubles in official retail, this is the price for the younger and older versions. The dealers' prices are noticeably lower, they amount to approximately 30 and 35 thousand rubles. But here everyone chooses whether there is a guarantee or no guarantee, how attractive each of the options looks.

Compared to the previous OnePlus 3 / 3T, the design has changed, although the body materials and performance remained the same, including the screen itself, although more settings appeared for it. In my opinion, with the price of OnePlus 3T at 26 and 30 thousand rubles in the gray market, this is not the most interesting offer and you should not save here, the new model turned out to be much better and more powerful.

On the other hand, there are many offers on the market for this money, let's start with the same Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE, which costs 30 thousand rubles on the gray market (42-43 thousand in the PCT version). Devices of different levels in the perception of brands, some advantages are on the side of S7 EDGE - such as higher screen resolution, support for Gear VR, protection against water, wireless charging, better screen implementation and slightly worse performance. Excellent, albeit a single camera. There is something to think about and not the fact that you will choose the OnePlus 5.

The higher quality Chinese smartphones become, the more expensive they are sold. Meizu Pro 7, which also has a dual camera, but also has a second display on the back, is an alternative to OnePlus 5 in terms of originality and unusualness. A very distinctive device, but the price of 40 and 45 thousand rubles, of course, looks at the level of OnePlus 5 and does not give any special advantages. Read the first look at this device to understand how interesting it is to you or not.

You can endlessly list the different competitors of OnePlus 5, I have noted only a few. Here someone can bribe that there is a 3.5 mm jack, but the sound is not so hot, the same Meizu is head and shoulders above with its dedicated DSP for sound. You have to look in detail what exactly you need from the device, but it can be argued that the OnePlus 5 is successful. Sales of this model in Russia are rather sluggish, both in official deliveries and in the gray market - this is not a mass audience, the product is not for everyone. But the smartphone turned out to be successful and we must give it its due in this.

In 2017, OnePlus announced the 5th series of smartphones. However, less than six months later, in 2018, a 5T series smartphone appeared. Thus, the company decided to update the line of 5 series smartphones. As soon as the OnePlus 5 and 5T smartphone (64GB and 128GB) appeared, the advantages and disadvantages became obvious. This is not to say that everyone liked them. Many are called "flagship device destroyers." In fact, this is far from the truth. The article describes two models of OnePlus smartphones 5 and 5T series.

Operating system

In the 5th series, the shell of the Android 7.1.1 operating system is used, in the 5T the developers decided to use the 8th version with the OxygenOS 5.0.3 firmware.

Display

The display size in the 5 series is 5.5 inches with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, the 5T screen has increased to 6.01 inches, and the resolution has also increased to 1080x2160 pixels. The rest of the parameters remained unchanged for both devices:

  • the density of the screen image is 401 dpi;
  • the display has a double layer of polarization of the Optic AMOLED matrix;
  • functionality from previous series is left - automatic control of screen brightness adjustment;
  • the developers decided not to experiment and left the glass protection of the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 brand.

Chipset

The processor type has remained unchanged in both Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 MSM8998 models. Depending on the chipset, this can be:

  • a quad-core Kryo processor with a clock operating frequency of 2.45 GHz;
  • Quad-core Kryo processor with a clock operating frequency of 1.9 GHz.

Even with the lowest frequency, the processor remains productive. Such processors are used mainly by no more expensive models of devices, which very pleasantly surprised many owners. Together with the Adreno 540 graphics processor, they increase its performance by a class above its price category.

Memory

The working memory of both devices is:

  • 6 GB RAM (LPDDR4X memory modules are used). The amount of disk space is 64 GB type UFS 2.1;
  • 8 GB RAM (LPDDR4X modules). The size of the capacity of the disks is 128 GB type of memory UFS 2.1.

Removable drives are not included.

Battery and SIM cards

Used lithium polymer batteries (Li-Pol) 3300 mAh. The option to quickly charge the Dash Charge battery at a voltage of 5V and a current of 4A is applied. There is a dual sim slot for two nanoscale SIM cards.

Front-camera

Sony IMX371 front camera with 16 megapixels, f / 2.0 lens aperture, EIS imaging technology, Auto HDR and 1080p image density.

Rear camera

The rear camera has dual modules. The first Sony IMX398 module has a resolution of 16 megapixels with autofocus, an f / 1.7 lens aperture and EIS image processing technology. The second Sony IMX376K module has 20 megapixels of resolution. The lens aperture in the 5 series of the device is f / 2.6, in the 5T series it is f / 1.7. Another difference between the cameras is the x1.6 optical zoom. The OnePlus 5T device model does not have one. The cameras of both smartphones have many photography modes and an automatic LED flash.

Miscellaneous

There is an active noise cancellation system and a dedicated equalizer with built-in Direc HD Sound technology. There is a fingerprint scanning sensor, only in the 5T model it is placed on the back of the case. Both models have proximity, light, magnetic field sensors, an acceleration calculator, a gyroscope, and a Sensor Hub list option.

Operate on LTE frequency bands on FDD channels 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/17/18/19/20/25/26/28/29/30/66 and on TDD 38 / 39/40/41. Wireless Wi-Fi network using 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac standard. There is a navigation system GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS. Dimensions of devices: OnePlus 5 - 154.2x74.1x7.3 mm, OnePlus 5T - 156x75x7.3 mm, Weight of devices: OnePlus 5 - 154 grams, OnePlus 5T - 162 grams.

As you can see from the technical description, smartphones have no significant differences. Their main difference is size and operating systems. The developers decided to remove the optical zoom from the 5T model. Not all owners liked this novelty.

Equipment

The package includes:

  • smartphone;
  • glass protection stickers. It is glued at the factory;
  • instructions for users;
  • warranty service coupon;
  • device charging device with USB-C cable, cord length is standard;
  • silicone case (OnePlus 5T only).

Comparative description

The OnePlus 5T smartphone appeared in 2018 almost six months after the release of model 5 of the same device. The changes turned out to be minimal, and somewhere not even distinguished by originality, which was perceived by the fans of this brand very hostilely. The question arises, how to choose, if the changes are only in size. The company has increased the mass just to increase the size of the displays. Although the battery remains the same. The decrease in pixelation of the rear camera and the removal of optical zoom in the company explained the need to improve the quality of images in low light conditions. With the same characteristics of the matrix, this is hard to believe.

As for design, the company never ceases to amaze with its borrowed ideas for external performance. Ideas for the previous versions were taken from Huawei. Although they are not among the best manufacturers. The placement of panels, buttons, the presence and location of a dual camera, the general outline of the case indicated a clear borrowing from the devices of this company. Moreover, the manufacturer is not at all embarrassed by such similarities and uniqueness of their devices.

On the contrary, they seem to show who they are challenging and who they want to surprise. This is a confrontation between Android devices and more expensive iOS devices. They seem to prove to these companies why customers prefer their devices. And statistics helps them in this, their devices are in the first place in the rating of quality goods in terms of the number of phones sold. Users understand which company is better to buy.

Companies such as Samsung, Huawei, Apple are in serious competition for OnePlus. Their smartphones are much more expensive, but how much this speaks about the quality of their products is difficult to judge. Everyone knows the marketing trick of raising prices, which should indicate high quality. However, this ratio is not always justified. Therefore, OnePlus smartphones are considered for a limited, narrow circle of buyers who understand gadgets. They buy the filling for their products from their direct competitors.

Devices of the 5 and 5T line have many positive qualities that will help it reach the masses, especially since there is an opportunity to buy them at lower prices. Where can you buy profitably? As an example, Aliexpress. They offer reliable, non-defective products at low prices but no warranty. For example, you can buy smartphones from them for less than 140,000 tenge for Kazakhstan.

The first acquaintance of all buyers with the phone begins with the complete box. Of course, no one will admire its design for long. After opening it, they will throw it away or put it away in a drawer, and they will never remember it again. But the design, the approach to recruiting is done competently. The first impression is always positive.

The phone itself is available in just two colors: gold and dark gray. The first option is more feminine, the second is suitable for people of any gender. Sometimes the company produces a limited number of series that never actually appear on the market. You can find out about them only from the company's news feeds, but it is almost impossible to purchase them. So, for example, it was with the JCC + series. This is a marketing extension of their models, which are available only in the virtual access of an inexpensive line of models.

The body has a pleasant curved shape that makes it more comfortable ergonomics. Since it is very thin, it is very convenient and easy to hold in your hand and store in your pockets. This will be especially appreciated by men who prefer to carry their phones in the pockets of their trousers and jackets. It is practically not felt there. However, there are complaints about its subtlety and streamlined shape. To people with big hands, it seemed like a "bar of soap" that constantly strives to slip out of their hands. Saves only the silicone case, which is included in the package. Indeed, the body is thin, streamlined, the surface is smooth, and for those who are not accustomed to it, it seems uncomfortable at first.

Weighing 153 and 162 grams, it does not seem heavy even for women and children. Only the 5T version is more suitable for men due to the elongation of the body. This speaks in favor of this series. The body itself is made of an anodized phone. The display has glass protection. Many owners note the absence of scratches and the preservation of the paint even after six months of operation. This only speaks of the strength of the case. Even phones of a high price category cannot boast of this. Anodized aluminum is a very expensive material and this is reflected in the overall cost of the device.

On the back there are two special holes for installing antennas. You can only see them if you look specifically to find them. On the golden case, they are easier to notice, but they do not spoil the appearance. The layout of all controls remains the same. It remains standard for every episode and never changes.
On the top front there is a special indicator indicating missed events. The LED is not bright, but it is difficult not to notice it. The functionality of the phone with a user-friendly interface allows you to customize the highlighting of events in different colors. All sensors and a front camera are also located here. How she takes pictures can be seen in the photos below.

On the left side there is a checkbox with three positions. Its purpose is to switch the desired modes without having to go into the phone settings and set these modes. Nearby is a double button for volume control. It is also used to navigate through the menu when the phone boots up. On the opposite side there is a power on / off button for the phone. There is also a slot for SIM-cards. The holder is removable, so you can safely remove it, insert the SIM-card and insert it back. The phone uses nano SIM cards.

In the lower part there is a mini USB connector, type C. Nearby there is a microphone for talking on the phone. Another microphone is located next to the rear camera, but it is only used for recording voice while filming video and absorbing noise while talking on the phone. It does not cause any particular problems. Also at the bottom is a speaker and a 3.5mm SD card slot.

Below the screen is a fingerprint sensor. OnePlus 5T has it on the back. No one has any complaints about his work. In terms of performance, it matches the expensive counterparts of other phone manufacturers. You can set the sensor for one long touch or two short ones. The speed of scanning and processing the received data takes literally a split second. The functionality of the phone allows you to assign a touch to the scanner to call any function convenient for the user, for example, to call games. Although its main function is to unlock the screen. On the sides of the sensor there are touch keys. Their functionality remains the same.

The only drawback of the smartphone that can be noted is the presence of a film. It protects the glass. But over time, it begins to wear out and scratch. You will have to remove it.
Some "experts" even looked inside and found silicone seals there. This indicates the tightness of the case. It is protected from moisture, dust, dirt. It cannot be considered completely sealed. It will not stand the test by bathing, since there are connectors that are not equipped with such seals, for example, a SIM card slot.

Comparison of displays

Smartphones OnePlus 5 and 5T have screen sizes of 5.5 and 6.1 inches diagonally, respectively. This is where the difference between the screens ends with each other and with other models of the same company. Manufacturers continue to use AMOLED matrices. The popularity of the models of this matrix distinguishes their products from cheap consumer goods, and puts them on a par with the phones of more expensive brands.

Although matrices are bought from their direct competitor Samsung or smaller manufacturers, the performance of their matrices is much lower. It does not have highly efficient energy saving functions, so it will quickly drain the battery with its work. The name of the matrix appeared the prefix Optic, but this only means that the developers have adjusted the profiles of the color gamut. This feature has the entire line of OnePlus smartphones. Therefore, this cannot even serve as a criterion for choosing a phone.

The viewing angles are maximum without any image distortion. The only drawback that can be noted is the presence of a slight shade of green when changing the viewing angle. This is a serial disadvantage of this matrix. But good for viewing images, they are always clear with a contrast of 10,000: 1 and a brightness of 440 cd / m3. This is a very good quality for this price group. There is a possibility of color calibration. You can change color schemes in your phone settings. There are only two of them: sRGB, DCI-P3. Using a custom color scheme allows you to customize the screen for non-cold or warm colors yourself. The screen dims a little in the sun, but the images are always visible.

Phone battery

It uses 3300mAh lithium polymer batteries. At first glance, such a capacity should not last long. However, as it turned out, when the screen is on, its charge lasts for 6-7 hours. With moderate use, the phone will be able to work for almost two days. The battery lasts 20 hours for listening to music, and up to 15 hours for surfing the Internet. There is a very convenient function of fast charging of the DASH technology battery. It allows you to fully charge the battery in just an hour.

Hardware performance

The phones come in two flavors, with 6GB and 8GB of RAM, and 64GB and 128GB of hard drive capacities, respectively. Both options show high performance even at maximum load. Using the Snapdragon 835 chipset, which itself is very powerful, coupled with fast and large memory, manufacturers were able to get a phone with good characteristics. The RAM speed is 6700 MB / s, the built-in memory has a data processing speed of 215 MB / s. With a processor clock speed of 214 GHz, it turned out to be a very nimble phone. Suitable for working with large amounts of information and for active games.

Comparison of cameras

In the version of the OnePlus 5T phone, the developers decided to abandon the zoom, which is present in the 5 series. Instead of zoom, the developers decided to use paired modules with different resolutions. As soon as the illumination falls below 10 lux, a high-resolution camera is activated. How she photographs at night can be seen in the photo below.

This decision did not please everyone. The zoom function is interesting in itself. Many are accustomed to her and would like to see her in all models. Despite this omission, the cameras produce good, clear images. There is good focusing with good image sharpness.
The video quality remained at the same level. Maximum 4K resolution for a frame rate of 30 frames / second. However, the camera does not have optical stabilization.

Smartphone OnePlus 5 received a state-of-the-art Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and even more RAM than its predecessor. As a result, its performance exceeds the capabilities of many desktop computers. All components are hidden in a thin metal case with elegant lines and a pleasant to the touch rough surface.

MULTIMEDIA OPPORTUNITIES
The device takes mobile gaming to the next level. Its AMOLED sensor is carefully calibrated to produce vibrant, rich colors and exceptional color accuracy. The built-in audio system can handle music recorded in high definition formats, including AANC and Dirac HD. The powerful speaker is located at the bottom of the case, so the sound quality remains unchanged even when the device is lying on a soft surface.

COMFORTABLE TRAVEL
The smartphone provides unlimited internet access on long trips. It supports high-speed LTE networks (up to 600 Mbps) and maintains a stable connection with Wi-Fi a / c routers over a long distance. It also allows you to quickly determine your location - connecting to satellite navigation systems takes a minimum of time. With all this, the user does not have to wait long to recharge the device. It uses the latest energy-saving technology for up to 2 days of battery life. DASH technology also speeds up battery charging (30 minutes to 75%), protects it from overloads and keeps the temperature cool during the process.

DOUBLE CAMERA
With a smartphone, you can get real photo masterpieces. It gently blurs the background of portraits and product shots for depth, maintains high contrast even in adverse conditions, and delivers superb detail in every shot. The dual camera also supports manual operation, giving access to white balance, shutter speed and ISO settings. High-speed autofocus and electronic stabilization help you get high-quality photos without preparation.

EXCEPTIONAL CONVENIENCE
The OxygenOS operating system is an improved version of Android with the ability to quickly access the most important functions and change the appearance of the interface. The fingerprint scanner ensures the security of the user's personal and financial data, but does not create any delays, since it is triggered in just 0.2 seconds. A special switch on the left side allows you to instantly change different profiles of sound signals, and a multi-color LED indicator provides detailed information about the latest events.
