4A0 and 2A0 - DIN 476 high size formats

There are also paper sizes larger than A0 - these are 4A0 and 2A0. These sizes are not described in the ISO 216 standard, but are commonly used for large paper sizes. The origin of these formats comes from the German DIN 476 standard, on the basis of which ISO 216 was created.

Size A paper size tolerances and errors

    ISO 216 allows for errors in the production of A-size paper up to the following values:
  • ± 1.5 mm (0.06 in.) For sizes up to 150 mm (5.9 in.)
  • ± 2 mm (0.08 in.) For sizes ranging from 150 to 600 mm (5.9 to 23.6 in.)
  • ± 3 mm (0.12 in.) For any dimension above 600 mm (23.6 in.)

Format series A characteristics and properties

    ISO 216 characterizes a given paper size with the following parameters:
  • Length divided by sheet width equals 1.4142
  • Each subsequent dimension A (N) is defined as A (N-1) cut in half parallel to its short side.
  • The A0 format has an area of ​​1 square meter.
  • The standard length and width of each size is rounded to the nearest millimeter.

Note: the last point is there, because the square root of 2 in the aspect ratio does not always give whole numbers.

International implementation and use of sheet format

A-size paper sizes are currently used widely around the world, except in the United States, Canada, and parts of Mexico. A4 has become the standard business letter size in English-speaking countries such as Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, which are accustomed to using the imperial number system everywhere. In Europe, paper sizes were adopted as the formal standard in the mid-20th century, and from there they spread throughout the world.

Most of the standard printing products are printed in standard formats: A6, A5, A4, A3, A2, DL "euro format" - 99x210 mm (1/3 A4) or in sizes that fit comfortably on the sheet format.

If you offer the printing house to print a non-formatted product, most likely you will have to overpay for paper that ends up in the trash, and at best for recycling. This mainly applies to papers that are intended for digital and offset printing. But, for example, design cardboards and papers have a size in most cases of 700x1000 mm (approximately B1 format 707x1000mm). When printing on such papers, you need to be more careful about the size of the product, since the cost of such materials is orders of magnitude higher.

Format, aspect ratio and more

The size of the A0 sheet format in centimeters is 84.1 * 118.9 centimeters. But we do not live in a perfect world, so any product has an error or inaccuracy. This also applies to A0 in mm. For paper "A", the ISO 216 standard from 1975 is used, which gives manufacturers the opportunity to deviate slightly from strict norms.

For paper size A0, which is in the uppermost range (products over 600 millimeters), an error of three millimeters is allowed.

For drawing, this figure is not critical, and in the case of industrial use, all products are pre-checked. This is especially important when creating a drawing with the size A0 in cm. It is with the size A0 that the concept of "Whatman" is associated, which is often mistakenly applied to the A1 format.


Why is this happening and what is the general format for creating a paper sheet "A"? What are the benefits?

    One, affordable and proven measurement system. All measurements are carried out in millimeters, so an ordinary client has the opportunity to independently double-check the dimensions of the A0 format in mm if he suspects the wrong size. Millimeters are rather small designations, but you can measure them with a regular ruler, which is in every home.

    Calculation of proportions. By multiplying the length of the short side by a factor of 1.4142, you get the long side. And it doesn't matter if the size of Whatman A0 is in centimeters, millimeters or meters. And it doesn't matter if A0, A1 or another "A" sheet - the area changes, but the proportions remain the same.

    A ready-made formula for calculating smaller formats based on large ones on their sides. To get the parameters of any sheet A, you need to cut sheet A-1 in half. Make sure that the cutting lines run exactly parallel to the width of the sheet. By the way, if you are too lazy, there is no time and desire, to bother with measurements and calculations - just open the table with paper sizes. It contains not only the size in mm, cm, but also in pixels, and all the data is exactly equal to the standards. Note that plates often indicate inches instead of pixels or cm.

The international standard for paper sizes, ISO 216, is based on the metric system and is based on a paper sheet format that has an area of ​​1 m² (Size A0). Consists of three series of formats (with similar sizes for the same numbers):

  • A - the base is taken as an area of ​​1 m² for the maximum sheet of the series.
  • B - the base is taken as a length of 1 m for the short side of the maximum sheet of the series.
  • C - Envelope sizes for Series A sheets (about 9% larger).

The area and dimensions of the B format sides are the geometric mean between the corresponding parameters of the adjacent A formats, and the area and dimensions of the C format sides are the geometric mean between the respective neighboring B and A formats.

The most widely known ISO standard format is A4. In Russia, for technical documentation (drawings, diagrams, texts, diagrams) formats are standardized from A4 to A1 (with folding rules up to A4 for storage). A3 format is the second most used, after A2, the standard newspaper size.
