Step-by-step instructions for setting up a router. Wi-Fi router for dummies: purpose, principle of operation, device connection. There is a wired Internet, how to connect wifi

Hey! I'll probably start with the fact that I have already written many articles on setting up Wi-Fi routers, and about the problems that may arise in the process of setting up and operating wireless access points. All articles are on this site, mainly in the "Internet" section. In this article I will give links to the most necessary materials that may be useful to you when setting up a Wi-Fi router.

What is this article about? I want to tell you in general terms about self-installation and configuration of a Wi-Fi router. Perhaps you want to buy a router and make a wireless network at home. Now is the time that without it there is already nowhere. One computer is connected to the Internet via a cable; this is already in the past. These are constant fights in the family for the opportunity to surf the Internet and a big queue behind :).

Moreover, now almost all devices have the ability to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi. Phones, smartphones, tablets, laptops, netbooks, etc. And if there is no Wi-Fi at home, then you simply limit their capabilities. Until I forgot, I would like to write a few words about the harmfulness of Wi-Fi, or rather the waves that Wi-Fi emits -Fi router. I wrote about this in a separate article. If you are interested in this question, then read the article. I will only say that there is no point in hiding from these “harmful waves”.

Run a network search in your home. And you will see how many routers your neighbors have already installed (provided that you do not live in a village, most likely there will be no Wi-Fi networks)... Moreover, the radiation from Wi-Fi is several times less than from an ordinary mobile phone, which we also hold near our heads. So they are afraid of a Wi-Fi router, this is not entirely normal and stupid.

Another plus of the wireless access point (aka Wi-Fi router) the fact that you can completely get rid of wires in your home. For some reason I am sure that your computer is not installed near the front doors :). This means that the network cable must be pulled through the entire house. What if you just made a good renovation? A Wi-Fi router solves all problems. You can put it, or hang it near the front doors, and some manage to put it in the common corridor (well, when there is a corridor for two apartments).

You may ask: "What about a regular desktop computer that does not have the ability to connect via Wi-Fi and needs a network cable connection?" everything is very simple, there are Wi-Fi receivers for such cases. I wrote about how to connect a stationary computer to Wi-Fi in the article.

Is it possible to connect and configure a Wi-Fi router yourself?

Perhaps! And cast aside any doubts and excuses there, they say I don't know how, it's difficult, etc. Well, for example, I set everything up myself, I also wrote instructions on the site. If you are thinking of calling a wizard who will install and configure Wi-Fi, then my advice to you is, try it yourself first. Fail- call the master. It will turn out- perfect! Will you be able to, for example, change the provider and what, call the master again? And so set up everything yourself. Moreover, everything is relatively simple. You just need to want!

Here's my detailed to help you. Everything is detailed and point by point, there should be no problems. According to this instruction, you can configure other routers, because the process is practically no different. A lot of useful information is also in the comments, you can read them too.

Now I just remembered that I had not written about choosing a Wi-Fi router, because you are probably very interested in this question. I will not advise anything specific. Choose a router based on the amount of money you are willing to spend on it and the advice of the seller in the store (well, if the sales assistant is intelligent)... All routers are good in their own way and all have their drawbacks. So I took a cheap one for the house a year ago (250 UAH / 1000 rubles) router TP-Link TL-WR841N, I was advised in the store. An excellent device, no problems at all for a year of work.

Possible problems when setting up a Wi-Fi router yourself

Judging by the comments on the articles on this site, there are problems. But you shouldn't be afraid of that. Someone came across a defective router, someone simply did not want to understand the nuances of the settings and immediately writes: "Seryoga help, for some reason it does not work!" :).

Configuring the router - the main points:

  1. We connect the router to the computer via a network cable
  2. We connect the Internet to the router
  3. Go to the router settings
  4. Tab customization WAN... Settings from the provider, if you do not know what settings to specify, then you can safely call and ask the provider.
  5. Setting up a wireless Wi-Fi network... Password setting, encryption type, security type, etc.

These are the main points, read more about setting in the article. As for all sorts of problems and errors, they most often arise when specifying settings from the provider and when setting up a wireless network.

But if there is a problem, then there is a solution. I tried to collect all the basic problems when setting up a router and connecting to Wi-Fi. Of course, not just problems, but their solutions.

For convenience, I'll probably make a list of links to the pages on which I wrote about solving certain errors:

  • Well, the most common problem when setting up a router is probably. Not only is this article the most popular on this site, so at the moment (04/09/2013) left to it 739 comments.
  • If you still doubt whether you need to buy a rotuer and organize a wireless network in the house, then do not hesitate, but run to the store for a router. The wireless network is really convenient, for example, you will read my blog more often :).

The Internet has become an integral part of life, and every computer must have access to the network. At home, a connection via a Wi-Fi router is suitable for this, which makes it possible to use both a wireless connection (for laptops, mobiles, tablets) and a cable connection (for stationary computers).

Where is the best place to install a Wi-Fi router

For those who are thinking about options for how to install a router, you should start by choosing a place to place the device. This is influenced by several factors:

  • the location of the provider's modem or cables, if used;
  • apartment layout;
  • the location of the stationary computer (if any).

There are different models of wireless devices from Asus (Asus), TP Link, D-Link (D-Link), etc. They can have different data rates and coverage areas. This should be taken into account when choosing a location for the device, so that access is anywhere in your apartment. In this case, the best solution would be a central point, if the cable, the location of the modem and the stationary PC allow. If you are obliged to install the device closer to the computer in order to stretch the cable to it, then you need to focus on this factor.

How to connect a router to a computer or laptop

It's easy to figure out how to connect a Wi-Fi router to a computer. The process itself is fast, but problems can arise with setting up the device. The option of connecting a stationary PC via a wireless network and using a network cable will be considered separately below. The option of how to connect a router to a laptop is practically no different. Before buying a receiver, you should take into account that there are models on the market that do not support Wi-Fi distribution and act as an adapter (for connecting multiple devices).

At the first stage, in order to get access to the Internet, you need to correctly connect the wires to the device. There are several major manufacturers of routers, but the connection scheme is always the same. Here is a step-by-step instruction on how to connect a wifi router to a computer:

  1. Unpack and install the device, plug it into a power outlet. On the back panel, as a rule, there is a power button for the device: press it. If a signal comes in, the lights on the router will light up.
  2. There are several jacks on the back panel. One of them is always located on the edge and tinted with a different color (blue, yellow) with the WAN signature. Connect a wire from a modem or an Internet cable to it. You should hear the latch click, indicating that the cord is secured correctly.
  3. If you need to lead a cable to the PC, then insert it into any of the empty slots nearby and stretch it to the connector on the network card. When connecting, the lamp should light up, which means there is a signal.
  4. With a wireless connection, you need to go to the network settings on the PC itself.

Wireless router connection

For most users, an interesting option is how to connect to a router wirelessly. In the case of a laptop, everything is much simpler, because it has a built-in module for receiving a Wi-Fi signal. When it comes to ordinary PCs, the situation is somewhat more complicated, because you will additionally need to purchase an adapter for a wi-fi network. They are easy to find in any hardware store and are often sold with modems.

There are two variants of Wi-Fi adapters for PCs on the market - external and internal. The former are connected via a USB cable and stand on the table, outwardly similar to a docking station for a player from Apple. The latter are mounted on the motherboard via a PCI slot. They work equally well, but the external option can be disconnected and connected to another device, and the built-in one does not take up space on the table. A disc with drivers and software must be included with the device.

After connecting to a computer, the setup takes place in exactly the same way as on a laptop. In most cases, to turn on Wi-Fi on your computer, you just need to find your connection in the list of networks and enter a password. If you are connecting for the first time, you may need to specify the settings that were given to you when concluding a contract with the provider.

Twisted Pair Wired Connection

Previously, there was only one way to connect a wifi router to a stationary computer - a cord. At first, a cable from a telephone line was used (sometimes it is still used), then others appeared that provided not only a computer with Internet access, but also a TV with cable channels. This method of connection is still used now, as a rule, for stationary PCs. How to connect a computer to a router via a cable:

  • connect the provider's wire to the wi-fi router to the socket marked WAN or Internet;
  • the power cord must be plugged into one of the LAN connectors;
  • the other end of the cable should be connected to the Ethernet port of the computer; after connecting, the light should turn on (blink).

What to do if the router does not connect to the Internet

Even if you know how to connect a wifi router to a computer, have done all the necessary manipulations, a situation may arise that the connection to the Internet is not established. At the same time, everything works correctly through the cable, and the wireless network does not transmit data, but is visible in the list of connections. If you call the provider's support service, the first thing the specialist will suggest is to disconnect the wi-fi device from the outlet, wait 3-10 minutes and turn it back on. In many cases, this really helps.

If this method does not help, then it is highly likely that the computer cannot automatically obtain the IP or DNS address of the network. To check the settings, you need to right-click on your connection, select "Network Control Center", click on the image of the network connection and go to the "Details" tab. If there is nothing next to the DNS or IP item, then this is the problem. You need to call the support service and find out what values you need to register in the properties. After receiving them:

  1. Click on the connections and click on the "Properties" button.
  2. Find the item that ends with TCP / Ipv4. Click on it and click "Properties".
  3. Activate the items "Use the following IP-address", enter the data provided by your provider.
  4. Repeat the same for DNS gateways.
  5. Click "OK" and close the rest of the tabs.

How to connect a wifi router to a computer

Good day!

Many users are intimidated by the self-configuration of a Wi-Fi router, and when buying it, they also order a service for connecting and configuring it.

In my opinion, the price for this service in many stores is too high. (sometimes it reaches half the cost of a router)- especially since many can cope with this operation on their own (you just need to understand a little 👌).

I also want to add right away that if in the future you need to change the password, the parameters for accessing the Internet (or something else), you will still have to climb and figure it out yourself ...

That is why I "sketched" this small instructional article, with pictures and explanations of each step. I hope the step-by-step presentation of the material will help you figure out how and what to do.

So, let's get to the point ... 👌

Step-by-step instructions: connecting and configuring a Wi-Fi router

Choosing a location and placing a router

Many users make one mistake - they do not pay attention to the place where they install the router. No, for verification and initial setup, this is not so important, but for the constant operation of the device, this is not good in all cases ...

The fact is that depending on where you will have a Wi-Fi router, it will be strong depend on the level of reception networks in different parts of your home. Significantly reduce the Wi-Fi signal: load-bearing thick walls, mirrors, metal doors, etc.

That's why, position the router you need it so that it is approximately equidistant from all devices that will connect to its network (and also so that there are a minimum of obstacles to the network signal).

An example of an unsuccessful and successful placement of a router in a 2-room apartment is shown in the layout below.

On the choice and location of the router in the apartment

In general, I think that the message is clear: depending on the location of the router, the quality of the network signal, speed, errors, etc. will depend.

Connecting the router to the computer

A typical delivery of a router consists of (example in the picture below):

  • the router itself;
  • power supply unit;
  • network cable (usually 1-2 m long). Used to connect the router to a PC (laptop) and configure;
  • operating instructions;
  • antennas (there may not be an antenna - in some routers it is built into the device).

Those. there is everything you need to start connecting and configuring your device.

Direct connection boils down to the following:

  1. connect the router with a network cable (which comes with the router) with a computer or laptop. by the way, please note that the router usually has 4 LAN ports for this (marked, most often, in yellow)... On some routers, the marking instead of LAN may be Ethernet;
  2. disconnect internet cable (coming from the provider) from the computer system unit and connect it to the router: to the WAN or Internet port (usually marked in blue);
  3. connect power to the router and turn on the device;
  4. if everything is done correctly, various LEDs will start blinking on the device ...

If you show it schematically, then the Wi-Fi router becomes, as it were, an intermediary between your computer and the Internet cable from the provider. (see picture below).

Important! It is necessary to connect the router to a PC (laptop) using a network cable for the initial configuration of the device. Subsequently, the cable can be disconnected and the router placed in a more convenient place.

Configuring network card parameters

Before entering the Wi-Fi router settings, you need to correctly configure the network card (especially if you had different settings from default before).

First you need to open a tab in:

Control Panel \ Network and Internet \ Network Connections

The easiest way to do this is to press the key combination Win + R, enter the command ncpa.cpl and click OK.

Next, you need to open properties connection through which the connection to the router is made (most often, this is a local network connection, perhaps you will have something like an Ethernet connection).

Then you need to open select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4)" and open its properties.

In the tab "General" set the receipt of the IP-address and DNS-server automatically. Save settings.

Obtain IP address and DNS server automatically

Such settings are suitable in 99.9% of cases, because an active DHCP server looks at your Wi-Fi router in the local network - which will give a free IP address to your computer / laptop.

Entering the router settings (device IP address)

To enter the Wi-Fi router settings, you need to know its IP address (which is just enough to enter into the address bar of the browser and navigate through it).

Each router has its own. In most cases, he 192.168.1.1 but there are exceptions:

  1. address for D-Link and NetGear routers: 192.168.0.1 ;
  2. address for TrendNet routers: 192.168.10.1

👉 To help!

How (login to the web interface). What to do if the settings page won't open

Important!

Also pay attention to the stickers on the body of your Wi-Fi router - these stickers almost always have an IP address. By the way, on the same stickers you can find the login password for accessing the web interface.

After you enter correct IP address to enter the router settings and press Enter - you will see a window asking you to enter your username and password (example in the figure below).

As a rule, in most cases, both the login and password will be admin... If you can't log in, try leaving the password field blank.

Configuring a router (router)

If the password and login were entered correctly, then you should get into the web interface (with a bunch of different settings, links, etc.)... Each manufacturer and different router models have a different interface.

But there is also one thing in common: the menu is usually located on the side or on top. The basic settings in the menu are also identical and set in a similar way. So, after looking at how one router is configured, you can configure another by analogy ...

As an example, I will take such a popular brand of routers as TP-LINK. (with "green" firmware in Russian) .

Cloning the MAC address of the old network card

The fact is that many providers have additional. security that checks the MAC address. And if the MAC address does not match (or has been replaced), access to the network is blocked.

To clone a MAC address, in TP-LINK routers, you need to open the link "Cloning a MAC Address" (in the "Network" section)... If you have an English version of the firmware, then look for a link of the form "MAC Clone" .

Cloning a MAC address

Setting up Internet access

Setting up Internet access mainly depends on how your ISP builds the network. The necessary parameters for access to the network, you must be given in the contract for the provision of Internet connection services.

Most often, in Russia the connection type is used PPPoE (note: a dynamic IP address is issued upon connection. To access, you must enter a username and password).

In the router, it is impossible to open the WAN (Internet) tab and first specify the type of connection (for example PPPoE, see "2" in the figure below)... You also need to specify username and password (see "3" in the figure below 👇, the data can be taken from the contract with the Internet provider).

It remains only to save the settings. In most cases, you do not need to enter anything else. Now the router can access the Internet - and the Internet should now appear on the computer that is connected to it with a network cable.

All that remains is to configure the wireless network ...

Setting up a Wi-Fi network

To set up a Wi-Fi network, you first need to open the tab (or in English. "Wireless Settings") .

In this tab, you must specify the name of the network - i.e. the name of the network that you will look for to connect on your gadgets: tablets, phones, etc. (in some cases, if there is a bad signal, it makes sense to select a channel. ).

Then you need to open the tab "Wireless Security" (or in English "Wireless Security") and choose the type of protection.

One of the best encryption types today is WPA2-PSK, which is the first in the list (we select it).

The PSK password is the password that you will need to enter when connecting to a Wi-Fi network.

Actually, after saving the settings, the router will go to reboot, and then you can connect to the Wi-Fi network and use the Internet.

That's the whole setup ... 👌

I understand that in this article I have not considered a lot of subtleties that, in special cases, can have a big impact on the operation of the network. But, probably, all of them cannot be foreseen within the framework of one article ...

As I work on the site, I will touch on this issue more than once or twice ...

It helped Didn't help

“Setting up a WiFi router? Nothing could be easier, Watson! " Even being a very distant person from the depths of knowledge of all the secrets of the computer world, most likely you still heard about such a concept as Wai Fai! Let's immediately define what this word means.

WiFi is a technology for transmitting information wirelessly using a radio signal.

Now it has become widespread, so in order to keep up with the homosapiens of the 21st century, I strongly recommend getting involved in the topic and actively mastering and using it. The advantage of setting up wifi at home over a cable connection is so huge that it makes no sense even to explain it - the Internet and data exchange without wires! No sockets, cords and other last thousand-year-old nonsense - took out a laptop or smartphone (or what else is holding your pocket?) - turned it on and rushed ...

If you are reading this article, then the question of setting up a WiFi router after the purchase has risen sharply for you. Well, let's figure out how to set up WiFi on a laptop and computer with Windows 7 or XP. In short, the following steps must be taken:

  1. Turn on the router
  2. Insert internet cable
  3. Connect from a phone or laptop with a wireless signal or pick up a computer over a wire
  4. Login to admin panel
  5. Connect the router to the provider
  6. Configure WiFi network (username and password)
  7. If necessary, make additional changes in the system

Setting up a Wi-Fi router through the site

Now let's take a closer look at the entire setup process. I'll make a reservation right away that the sections of the menu on the router's website, or rather the web interface of its administrator panel, can be called differently in different models and are located in different parts of the menu. The main thing is to understand the essence, in which section what needs to be prescribed during installation.

So, first of all, you need to purchase a wifi-enabled router. To set up a router for distributing a high-speed signal, it is advisable to purchase equipment with the maximum bandwidth (now there is already up to 450 Mb / s), which is called a reserve. All the features of the choice are described in detail in this blog.

After purchasing and unpacking, turn on the WiFi router and connect two cables to it - one, an Internet cable from the provider, to the “WAN” connector, the other, free on both sides, which came in the kit, to the “LAN” connector.

Connect the free end of the cable to the computer or laptop from which we will configure the equipment.

Go to the website http://192.168.1.1 or another address indicated on the bottom of the device in the browser. Depending on the manufacturer and model, the address may look like 192.168.10.1, 192.168.0.1 or 10.10.0.1 - from those that came across to me personally.

Enter username and password - usually admin / admin, but may differ. They are indicated in the same place, on the back of the router, next to the address for entering the admin panel.

In the settings of the router in the WAN or Internet section, select the type of connection, which is either specified in the provider's contract, or recognized by the technical support phone, and enter all the data for access depending on this type. Again, they are all indicated in the contract or accompanying explanatory materials and instructions of the provider.

In the "Wireless network" or "WiFi" section, set the name for our Wi-Fi (SSID)

In the security section, set the WPA2 / PSK encryption type and set the password for connecting to WiFi.

We activate the virtual server mode - DCHP, which allows us to dynamically distribute ip addresses from the specified range.

We save all the changes.

Setting up a WiFi router - connecting a laptop

Let's move on to setting up WiFi on a laptop. Let's consider the installation using the example of Wndows 7, although on XP everything will be the same - the only difference is in the names of menu items in the system itself. But first of all, keep in mind that the laptop must have a WiFi module - either built-in, which will be notified by a sticker on the case informing about its presence, or some kind of button to activate it.

If it is not there, then you need to purchase and install a WiFi adapter - in detail about the choice of this device.

Next, go to the network connections section using one of the following routes:
Windows XP: Start> Control Panel> Switch to Classic View> Network Connections.
Windows 7: "Start> Control Panel> Network and Internet> Network and Sharing Center> Manage network connections> Changes to adapter settings."

We find our wireless connection, right-click on it and go to "Internet Protocol version 4" and in the properties of the network adapter, set the checkbox to obtain DNS automatically.

Open the laptop with the wifi module turned on, find the wireless connection icon in the lower right corner of the Windows icon bar.

Click on this icon - a list of WiFi networks available in the range of reception will open. We find our name with the name just configured on the router and enter it under the specified password.

Possible errors when configuring the router

When self-configuring a router to distribute a wifi signal, beginners often make fairly simple mistakes. I will give a solution to the most common ones.

Incorrect cable connection to the router

Very often, novice users are confused about which connector the cable from the provider is inserted into, and which is the patch cord that connects the router to the computer. So remember - the Internet cable always goes only to the "WAN" connector - on most models it is marked with a special color, or with the inscription Ethernet.

Broken DHCP server function

Among others, the main and very convenient task of a router is to automatically assign IP addresses to connected devices. The function of the so-called DHCP server is responsible for it. If it is disabled on your device, then for each computer you need to assign ajres manually, and if you have not done this, naturally they will not be able to see each other and access the Internet. Therefore, either activate it or assign an IP manually for each device on the network.

Simultaneous operation of two DCHP servers

If your network consists of several routers, then only one of them should work in the mode of distributing IP addresses.

Wireless channel

Very often, readers complain about a poor and unstable connection when they are near a router. This could be because your neighbors are also using a wireless router and their radio channels are crossing over. To avoid this, it is necessary in the parameters of the wireless network channel in the admin panel of the router to switch it from the "Auto" mode to any number from 1 to 12. Also, interference can be caused by working household appliances.

If all the settings of the router were made correctly, then the Internet should start working wirelessly. Follow the blog updates to find out how to increase the range of your wifi and much more.

Video on connecting and configuring the router

It helped Didn't help

Greetings, our dear readers. In the modern world, almost everyone is faced with Wi-Fi routers. The Internet is firmly established in our lives. Sometimes you have to connect and configure it yourself, let's find out how to configure a Wi-Fi router yourself.

First of all, we need this:

  • availability of a wired Internet connection;
  • PC or laptop;
  • wireless router;
  • cable to connect to the network card.

How to properly configure the Internet via a Wi-Fi router for home? Initially, the equipment must be connected. It is the same for all routers, for clarity, everything is clear in the photo.

And sometimes manufacturers just draw a diagram on the modem itself. It is very convenient and understandable.

Here's what we need to do:

  • To do this, insert the power supply cord into the router.
  • Next, the provider's cable should be inserted until a characteristic click into one of the ports on the device, which differs in a different color from the others.
  • We connect our laptop or desktop computer to any of the remaining LAN ports.

Connecting via the web interface.

Nowadays, almost all network routers are managed using the web interface. Therefore, it is worth considering the question of how to set up a Wi-Fi router at home through a computer browser. To use the program, you must first enter it.

To this end, we do the following:

Setting basic parameters.

In the Wan tab / Basic settings / General settings (or something similar), you need to set the following parameters:

  • connection type
  • username and password
  • IP parameters
  • connection mode

Currently, in most cases, the PPPoE connection type is used, for clarification, you can find out from the agreement with the provider or in the support service.

Sometimes there is no such parameter, more often the required type of connection is automatically connected there, if not found, we skip.

We enter the username and password from the documents provided at the conclusion of the contract.

Leave the IP parameters Disable, or Dinamic IP, depending on the conditions provided by the operator.

We set the connection mode to Auto so that the devices can connect to it automatically and at any time. And don't forget to save the settings! =)

After that, we proceed to setting up the WiFi connection.

Open the Wireless / WiFI tab or something similar. In the tab of the basic settings of the wireless network, we need to specify:

  • Connection type
  • Network mode
  • Wireless network name SSID
  • Channel

The connection type is set based on the data in the contract, most often as an "Access point". Sometimes this parameter is simply not there.

Set the network mode as b / g / n or g / n mixed. The bottom line is that, depending on the network mode, devices with different WiFi standards can work in it. So if you have an old phone or laptop, then it will not be able to connect to the modern Wi-Fi standard. If you have a modern device, then it is capable of working in most standards.

We set the name of the wireless network as desired - this is the name of your wifi for connection, for example "My_WiFay".

The channel can be left auto.

However, if in this mode the devices will not connect, then you should manually change it to 7 or any other selection method. This is due to the fact that in our time there can be several routers nearby, for example, in a multi-storey building and they can work in the same range, which causes difficulties.

And at the final stage of setting up Wi-Fi on the router, we go to the security settings. Here you need to do the following:

After that, we try to connect to WiFi from a phone or tablet and check the functionality. Next, you need to correctly change the settings of the network card in order to connect the laptop to the network.

Configuring the network card

To fully answer the question, they say, how to set up a Wi-Fi router, we still need to correctly configure the network card itself. You can perform manipulations in the "Network Connections" menu.

  • The easiest way to get into it is through entering the parameters of the network adapter through the command line, using the Win + R key combination, after that by executing the ncpa.cpl command.

  • Or just go to the network parameters;

  • Next, you should open the properties of the connection that interests us;

  • After that, you need to go to "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4)";

  • Where it is worth putting a checkmark in front of the IP and DNS items, allowing in this way to automatically receive them.
  • After that, we connect to the configured WiFi network of our modem as usual!

So we figured out how to set up a Wi-Fi router (Wi-Fi) without a disk using the web interface. That's all for me, leave your comments or questions below, subscribe to our group, bye, everyone.
