Fujitsu LIFEBOOK U772 is a solid player in the ultrabook market. ⇡ Appearance and usability

Many users believe that ultrabooks are the same laptops, only thin and light. In fact, everything is somewhat more complicated. To qualify as an ultrabook, a laptop must meet several of Intel's stringent specifications, not only in terms of weight and thickness, but also performance, startup time, battery life, and support for management, monitoring, and data protection technologies. Not all of these parameters are important for every user, but Intel's goal was to set the vector for the development of the entire industry, which it successfully coped with.

From the specs, and the looks too, it is clear that the Fujitsu Lifebook U772 was not designed just as an embodiment of the ultrabook concept. Rather, this is an attempt to squeeze the maximum possible out of it and make an unconditionally ideal ultrabook. Ideal, first of all, for the favorite Fujitsu audience - IT professionals, corporate users, businessmen.

Words about "incredible" and "fantastically small" thickness of the laptop can now be found in every first press release, and this will surprise no one for a long time. Nevertheless, the Fujitsu developers paid maximum attention to the form factor and received the most thin laptop with a 14-inch matrix. 15.6 mm in the thickest place - there is simply no point in less, you will have to cut the number of interface ports and sacrifice performance. The weight is also quite modest - 1.4 kg, about two iPads. You can't hold it in the palm of your hand for a long time (why would that be?), But in a briefcase or bag, its mass is practically not felt.

Most of the weight falls on the lower half of the case, when opened, the ultrabook is not prone to collapse, and the rigidity of the hinges is selected in such a way that the lid can be opened with one hand. It is very convenient.

The laptop display is said to be frameless. To be precise, there is still a frame around the screen, it is simply invisible, and an HD camera is embedded into it from above. The display is based on a TN-type matrix with a resolution of 1366x768 pixels, provided with an anti-reflective coating - i.e. the screen is matte, which is good news. Perhaps the gloss would have shown a more juicy picture, but for work, the absence of glare is more important.

Everything inside the U772 is solidly arranged and without compromise - motherboard based on Intel QM77 chipset, processor Intel Core i5 or i7, i5-3317U to i7-3687U, 4 or 8 GB of memory with a single DDR3-1600 module, and a disk system in several possible configurations. The user is free to choose between a combination of 320 or 500 GB hard disk with a 32 GB solid state drive for caching (Intel Smart Response Technology), or simply a 128 GB or 256 GB SSD. This makes it possible, upon purchase, to vary according to taste not only the capacity of the disk system, but also its performance, the start time of the OS, and the weight of the laptop as a whole. All this not weak filling can live 7-10 hours on a single battery charge - if you limit yourself to working with documents and surfing the web. Heavy resource-intensive tasks can shorten time autonomous work up to 2 hours is not too much, but more often than not, this is enough to get to the outlet of the electrical network.

The communication capabilities of the ultrabook are comprehensive - WiFi 802.11 a / b / g / n, Bluetooth 4.0, Ethernet and a 3G / LTE module that supports the frequencies of domestic operators. By the way, the SIM slot is hidden quite cleverly - on the back of the bottom panel, and is also covered with a lid. However, there is often no need to look there.

All other ports of the Fujitsu Lifebook U772 are located on the side panels... On the left are the power adapter jack, Kensington lock slot, USB 2.0 port, and headphone jack. On the right is a card reader, two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI and an Ethernet port of a reduced form factor (i.e. an adapter is required to connect an RJ-45).

But all this is quite ordinary, but what is rather atypical is the presence of a docking station in the kit. More precisely, you can buy without it, but if you use a laptop both at home and at work, it is extremely convenient. The docking station is on the desktop, you take the laptop out of the bag and put it on it (and practically without looking, the connector seems to find the appropriate socket) and your ultra-mobile computer turns into a full-fledged stationary workstation, powered by a network, seven USB 3.0 ports , RJ-45 and D-Sub, DVI and Display Port video outputs in addition to HDMI.

Traditionally, Fujitsu developers have paid special attention to data security features, and at all levels. All configurations of the U772 have a biometric sensor - a fingerprint scanner, which can be used to authenticate a user both in the OS and in other software that requires enhanced security measures. The solid state drives used support Full Disk Encryption (FDE). Finally, for the more careful, an optional TPM is available. Thus, even if you lose your Ultrabook, you do not have to worry about confidential information (if everything is configured accordingly, of course).

In conclusion, a few words about ease of maintenance and upgrades. The ultrabook battery is not removable, and you will not find any hatches on the bottom panel - according to Fujitsu's plan, the user should not look inside, leaving this occupation to the Fujitsu service or helpdesk of his own company. Nevertheless, opening the case is a simple matter: by unscrewing a few screws with a Phillips screwdriver, you will remove the bottom panel of the case and get full access to everything that may need service or replacement: battery, cooling system, memory, storage or hard drive, WiFi and 3G / LTE module.

Ultrabooks, despite Intel's efforts, did not capture the hearts of manufacturers as quickly as the processor giant wanted. It would seem that the pace taken outright last fall by Acer and ASUS, the first to introduce ultrabooks, will be picked up by other brands. But it was not there. Seeing that sales were not at all as high as we would like, the wave of laptops in the new category, invented by Intel, arrived only in time for the beginning of this year.

Some people ignored the first generation of ultrabooks altogether, deciding to wait for the release of 22 nm Ivy Bridge processors. This is understandable - the new chips brought not only higher performance at the same level of power consumption, but itself mobile platform became more modern and cheaper. In particular, the new 70-series chipsets began to support USB bus 3.0 - no need to install an additional controller. Also, a special caching technology appeared, which significantly accelerates data loading. And, finally, you can look at what rake other manufacturers have stepped on, and try to do without your own bumps.

We must assume that Fujitsu is of this opinion at least in part. If only because she released not one ultrabook model on the market, but three at once. Made, so to speak, a massive volley. And today we are getting acquainted with his "shells". More precisely, the "shell" - LIFEBOOK U772. It is of considerable interest, since it is the flagship ultrabook - these are always more interesting than ordinary representatives. And first of all, design. Let's take a look at it.

Design

Fujitsu is one of the few companies to retain its professional notebook line. Such people usually do not trump with any special appearance, their purpose is not at all to win the hearts of ordinary consumers. But with the LIFEBOOK U772, the situation is slightly different. On the one hand, Fujitsu does not have premium series and it gives all the best to corporate and business models, and on the other hand, ultrabooks are partly fashion computers.

And so it happened that LIFEBOOK U772 "jumped" into the top line of Superior, but at the same time it is decorated more frivolously than other representatives. For example, there is a variant of a laptop with a bright red outer cover. Unfortunately, we got a more classic silver color - it looks less pretentious, but also not as boring and strict as black.

In general, the appearance of the flagship Fujitsu ultrabook is extremely successful. She does not give the impression of some kind of expensive toy, but she is not overly strict either. It harmoniously combines corporate severity and solidity of an expensive item. At the same time, the LIFEBOOK U772 is unlike any other ultrabook from other manufacturers.

The outer cover is flat, with the manufacturer's logo etched in the center. There are no smooth bevels of the side edges - only a slight rounding of the corners. The laptop has a slight wedge-shaped shape, but similarities with MacBook Air no - the Fujitsu designers have managed to avoid this. In general, because of the light gray bottom and the pointed front end, in the center of which there is a thin black "layer" from the working area, the laptop looks very thin. Fujitsu handled this effect perfectly.

Another unusual design element is the thinnest screen bezel. The smaller it is, the larger the display appears - a well-known rule. In LIFEBOOK U772, it is so thin that the look from habit involuntarily clings to this design element. However, here Fujitsu cheated - the screen is actually smaller. There is another frame under the matte finish and this is immediately visible after turning on the computer.

The material of the ultrabook case deserves special mention. The manufacturer did not save on it, which is normal for flagship model... And so it happened that LIFEBOOK U772 is almost all metal. The outer screen lid, bottom, work area and even the keyboard frame can boast of this. We have not seen such a "dominance" of metal for a long time. As for the assembly, then, as always in the case of a product of this class, it is done perfectly. The body does not bend or creak anywhere. There is also no backlash.

Equipment

Today, even not all premium products can boast of a rich bundle. Gone are the days of bags, cases and mice in the standard delivery set - only the most necessary remains.

Along with the LIFEBOOK U772 ultrabook itself, the box contained a thick user manual, a 65 W power supply (19 V; 3.42 A) and a special RJ-45 adapter, which will be described in more detail below.

Ergonomics

When designing the LIFEBOOK U772, Fujitsu chose a 14 "screen diagonal for a reason. The company obviously pursued two goals: to make a not very large laptop at the same time, but easy to use. The convenience of a laptop, as you know, largely depends on the size. But the 15.6-inch form is factor - this is already a bit large, although Intel allows such ultrabooks. At the same time, 13.3 "models are not always optimal in terms of ergonomics. 14.0" offer more space on the working area under the wrists, more space for keyboard keys.

Actually, as for the keyboard, the designers have clearly worked on it. Visible non-standard approach, although not all successful. Basically, this can be said about the arrow block. On the one hand, it is not just separated from the main layout, but clearly protrudes slightly from the bottom, which allowed for more comfortable high keys. This is not common, but adds a lot of convenience. But the arrow keys are also supplemented and smears the impression. The very presence of these functions as separate keys is commendable, but when operating the arrow block blindly, they can be accidentally pressed.

Otherwise, everything is done well. We were pleased with the long modifier keys. To some, the left one may seem short, but its length is quite enough - the finger does not miss. Separately, we note the massive "two-story".

All symbols and designations are printed in white embossed red - each of the keys is different to the touch. Latin characters are slightly larger than Cyrillic, but this does not cause discomfort. Keystrokes are quiet, slightly elastic. The move is quite small - it will take some time to get used to it. But there's nothing you can do about it - this is a common occurrence for almost all ultrabooks, main feature which is a slim body. Another thing is that the keyboard flexes slightly in the center, even though it is of the island type. The laptop clearly lacks rigidity in this part. And the keyboard backlighting would not be superfluous, since we are dealing with a laptop from the Superior series.

The touch panel was made large and buttonless in modern fashion. It has a smooth finish that follows finger movements well. Gestures are, of course, supported. In the lower part, two relief lines conventionally indicate the left and right buttons... In this case, pressing occurs strangely - mostly closer to the central part of the touchpad. At the edges, the sensory area flexes, but there is no characteristic click.

To the right of the touchpad is a fingerprint scanner (where can a corporate laptop do without it?). Below it, on the front end, there are five LEDs: the computer is working, the battery charging process, the battery charge level, the hard disk operation, the operation of the wireless interfaces.

Three more LEDs are placed to the right above the keyboard: Num, Caps and Scroll Lock. The allocation of separate "bulbs" for them is another evidence of the professional purpose of the laptop. Other manufacturers combine them with keys, or even ignore them altogether. To the right is the only one additional button Eco combined with LED. It includes a power saving mode of the same name. And, finally, at the very "edge" there is a round power button, which is also illuminated by a blue LED around it.

The bottom of the LIFEBOOK U772 is designed quite stylishly, so that it can be shown to people as well. There are few ventilation holes on it - only a few slots under the fan, which is perfectly audible under heavy load. As for the heating, it was practically not felt from below, but it was clearly transferred to the keyboard frame. However, it usually does not have to be touched, and this method of removing heat is a normal practice for compact metal laptops.

Only the docking station connector is available for an independent "upgrade". Another element of the corporate laptop. Only service center specialists are allowed to open the lid. It should be assumed that only the hard disk and the only memory module are subject to replacement or upgrade. The latter may be maximum capacity 8 GB.

Connectors, sound and camera

The ultrabook's slim body is a notorious obstacle to installing a conventional set of connectors. But some manufacturers are trying to get around it, while others simply equip their laptops with a small number of ports. Fujitsu chose the first option.

The left side houses a power connector, a ventilation unit, a Kensington Lock, one USB 2.0 version, and a 3.5 mm audio output for headphones.

The right side got all the other ports: RJ-45, HDMI, two blue USB 3.0 and a card reader. Let's talk about RJ-45 separately. Here it is made in some kind of special, "flattened" version. We have not yet come across such a variant of its execution.

The LIFEBOOK U772 comes with a special adapter. The adapter is also very unusual - as a rule, it is a small "extension cord" with two different connectors at the ends. But in our case, the adapter is entirely plastic without wires. Moreover, it displays the RJ-45 connector at an angle of 90 degrees in the direction opposite to the user. It turns out that the port is brought out to the rear end.

The front and back faces were left blank.

With the sound of the Fujitsu laptop, the situation is the usual way for ultrabooks. For the sake of space saving, both speakers are placed on the bevel of the bottom in its front part. Because of this, they play "at the table" - and without that best sound turns out to be muffled. But, as we said, this is a common misfortune for almost all ultrabooks.

At the head of the screen frame is a small HD camera peephole. Directly above it is a small blue LED that warns of camera operation.

The quality of the images turned out to be relatively good. For laptop webcams, of course.

Screen

A laptop screen is usually a rather sore spot, especially if a mediocre matrix is installed in an expensive model. We are dealing with an expensive product, and therefore we make corresponding requirements to the LIFEBOOK U772 display.

At first glance, the screen looks good, even though it uses a TN + Film matrix. First of all, the viewing angles are pleasing. They're not as good as top-end professional laptops, but they're pretty good compared to the average. Vertically, the image still fades, but not as much as on cheaper mobile computers - you can see it right away.

The brightness level was 205.09 cd / m 2 with the manufacturer's declared 220 cd / m 2. This is a medium option, capable of providing comfortable work even during the day in direct sunlight. In this case, the brightness of the black point was 0.87 cd / m2, and the contrast, respectively, was 235: 1 (the manufacturer announced 300: 1). The black color on the screen of the Fujitsu Ultrabook looks gray, but in general the contrast level is decent for a mobile computer.

Backlight uniformity is rarely perfect. Here we see a clear darkening at the bottom of the screen, especially on the right side. At the same time, the center and top of the display are illuminated relatively evenly, although on average the upper part is still slightly lighter.

The gamma curves are also not very pleasing. The measured curve runs below the 2.2 reference, which means that most of the midtones are darkened, from lightest to darkest. As you can see, red tones are most darkened, and green ones lag behind them not so significantly. As for the blue ones, their curve looks noticeably better, but at the bottom it goes above the standard. This means that darker shades of blue appear lighter than desired. Probably, further we will observe problems with the white balance.

The color gamut of the display turned out to be on average better than that of laptops that cost around $ 700-1000. It covers 64.9% of the sRGB space, which is again a decent figure for a laptop.

And here is the color temperature. The graph obtained before calibration looks typical for an inexpensive laptop screen - almost on the entire scale we got values much higher than 6500K. And even at 100% white brightness, the white temperature was as much as 7376K. Balance white screen LIFEBOOK U772 is clearly littered with blue - the image on it looks unnecessarily cold.

However, after calibration, the picture changes dramatically. The temperature graph very quickly drops to the desired 6500K and in some places even slightly oversteps it, starting to turn red. The new graph began to closely resemble that of a regular desktop monitor. The image on the display after applying the new profile has become noticeably warmer and more pleasing to the eye. Let's take a look now what happened to the gamma curves after calibration.

Just amazing - the measured curve matches the 2.2 reference curve almost perfectly! There is no flare or darkening of the image. All this speaks of the high quality of the matrix installed in the laptop, but its factory setting is simply none.

And the last graph with color temperature uniformity. As you can see, warmer colors predominate in the lower part of the screen and in the upper left corner, while the rest of the screen produces higher (colder) values. But in general, the gap is not very large, which is already good.

And a few words about permission. It is standard 1366x768 pixels, although it would be possible to expect even more from such an expensive model. high value... For example, 1600x900.

Configuration

Currently, there are only two modifications of the Fujitsu LIFEBOOK U772, differing only in the color of the outer cover (silver and red). There are no other Ultrabooks in the Superior line yet. But one is enough, especially since its configuration can be varied over a relatively wide range.

Inside our copy of the Fujitsu Ultrabook is the popular Core i5-3317U processor. Today it is the youngest chip in Intel's "ultrabook" line. Moreover, it will be faster than most solutions of the previous generation. However, there is an option to order the LIFEBOOK U772 with a faster Core i5-3427U or Core i7-3667U CPU.

Volume random access memory in the top ultrabook Fujitsu can reach 8 GB, but we have half that installed. In principle, this is still sufficient for comfortable work. Please note that the company sets fast module DDR3-1600, but there is only one. This means that the second memory channel is not used.

The chipset also deserves a special mention. Fujitsu uses Intel QM77, a special edition for enterprise use. In addition to the standard HM77 features, this set of system logic supports technologies such as Intel vPro (with i5-34xx and i7 processors only) and AMT.

The discrete video card LIFEBOOK U772 will not please us - the manufacturer decided to do with the graphics built into the processor Intel core HD Graphics 4000. This is a fairly fast solution that even allows you to run modern 3D games, albeit not with the highest graphics quality settings. Another thing is that usually an Ultrabook is bought for other purposes.

As for the disk subsystem, Fujitsu also did the most popular way with it today - it installed a slow 500 GB hard drive (5400 rpm), but supplemented it with a 32 GB SSD cache. As practice shows, efficiency Intel technology Rapid Storage, which uses this cache, is very high - the speed of launching the system and applications increases noticeably. However, we add that optionally, instead of such a tandem, a full-fledged SSD-drive of 128 or 256 GB can be installed.

Communication capabilities are generally standard: Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi with support for 802.11a / b / g / n, Bluetooth 4.0. But note that the installed Ethernet controller is manufactured by Intel (82579 LM), as well as the Wi-Fi card (Centrino Advanced-N 6205). The latter is capable of providing data transfer rates up to 300 Mbps. In addition, as an option, the ultrabook can be equipped with either a Sierra Wireless Gobi 3000 3G controller, or a module with LTE support - Sierra Wireless MC7710.

There was no operating system on our laptop. But in general, Fujitsu installs Windows 7 Professional on the LIFEBOOK U772 - this OS is its priority for this model. At the same time, there is an option with the installation of a cheaper Windows 7 Home Premium and even the compatibility of the computer with Windows XP is guaranteed! In addition, the official Fujitsu website promises a cheap update to Windows 8 Professional when it comes out. For only $ 15.

In terms of dimensions and weight, the Fujitsu LIFEBOOK U772 has very decent performance. The laptop is 15.6 mm thick, which is not a record low, but this value is one of the best we have seen. In terms of weight, an ultrabook can be considered one of the champions - there is very little 1.4 kg for a 14-inch laptop.

Testing

To evaluate the performance of the Fujitsu LIFEBOOK U772, we decided to choose the well-known Samsung 900X4C ultrabook. This 15-inch premium model is in a slightly different price category, but on the whole it is comparable to the Fujitsu laptop in terms of features and configuration.

As you can see, the Samsung laptop almost completely repeats the characteristics of the LIFEBOOK U772, with the exception of the SSD-drive and the amount of RAM. But the first ultrabook Fujitsu will answer with its SSD-cache, and the second should not seriously affect the difference in performance.

Built on the same components, both laptops showed almost complete parity in office applications. However, the SSD cache of the Fujitsu LIFEBOOK U772 ultrabook turned out to be more efficient than a full-fledged SSD in the 900X4C. It is unlikely that this difference will be noticeable by eye, but the very fact of this is impressive - nevertheless, the Fujitsu variant is cheaper.

The rendering test showed exactly what we expected to see from it - the complete identity of the results obtained. It could not be otherwise with exactly the same processors.

In synthetic graphics benchmarks, both laptops were not up to par. Only in the Entry preset (its values are shown in the diagram) are they capable of something. There is not much difference between computers, but they are still not suitable for games. As, however, most other ultrabooks.

The diagram with games only confirms the above - the FPS level is quite low. All values were obtained at a resolution of 1366x768 pixels with medium graphics settings. No, in some games it is not catastrophically low, but it will not be possible to achieve comfortable gaming in modern titles. But again, recall that we are not dealing with gaming laptops... Nevertheless, one can clearly see how the efficiency of the graphics core built into the processor has increased. One or two more generations and today's games will be tough for ultramobile computers.

The battery of the Fujitsu LIFEBOOK U772, like most ultrabooks, is non-removable. Moreover, a small capacity of 45.36 W * h (3150 mA * h; 14.4 V). Obviously, these are all the costs of a thin case and low weight. Our rival, the Samsung 900X4C, offers a larger battery: 62.16 Wh (8400 mAh; 7.4 V). But the Fujitsu laptop has a special Eco mode, which we got to know when we reviewed the Fujitsu LIFEBOOK S761. Let's see how he shows himself here.

Indeed, the autonomy of the Fujitsu ultrabook turned out to be worse. But here it is worth explaining that the Samsung laptop is noticeably more expensive, and also more. But in general, the LIFEBOOK U772 lasted quite a long time - almost 7 hours in low load mode. And this is not the limit - Eco mode increases this value to 468 minutes, or almost 8 hours. However, the brightness of the screen is at a minimum, the sound and all network controllers are muted. On the Internet, the Fujitsu computer was able to work for almost five and a half hours, and it can play HD video for more than four hours, which is also a very decent indicator.

Output

Fujitsu's entry into the ultrabook market can be considered successful, despite the fact that this is only the first generation of such computers. Moreover, the company immediately decided to enter several price segments. And, of course, the representative of the most expensive of them, who visited us for testing, is the most interesting.

Fujitsu LIFEBOOK U772 has a great design. At the same time as strict as any professional Fujitsu laptop, but not boring. On the contrary, it looks more like a business laptop. In the hands of a business person, it will look great. Moreover, the thin computer case is made of metal.

At the same time, the LIFEBOOK U772 is an ultrabook focused on professional use. This is evident from the installed Intel QM77 chipset, support for Intel vPro technology, the presence of a fingerprint sensor, as well as the presence of a docking station connector on the bottom. It should be borne in mind that you have to pay extra for all this.

The laptop is distinguished by a comfortable keyboard ergonomics, a large touchpad, as well as an unusual implementation of the RJ-45 connector through a special plastic adapter. An SSD drive for data caching is also not superfluous. It really increases the speed of loading the system and applications.

Of course, there were some drawbacks. The screen on the Fujitsu LIFEBOOK U772 is generally good, but at least it could have been better adjusted at the factory. The lack of rigidity under the keyboard is not encouraging either, which causes it to flex. This, apparently, is all. The drawbacks cannot be called serious, so you should pay attention to this model if you need a thin and light mobile computer for work.

Price

A laptop from the Fujitsu Suprior line will not be cheap. So our LIFEBOOK U772 can be bought for about $ 1400. This is almost a premium segment, but, as we remember, in this case we are talking about a modification focused on professional use in a corporate environment. He has no direct competitors as such. But there are analogs that are close in characteristics and cost.

The Samsung 900X4C included in the testing can indeed act as an alternative to the Fujitsu LIFEBOOK U772. This is also an expensive model, which can be purchased for about $ 2000. The gap is, of course, very significant. But this Samsung ultrabook is not just a premium class, it is a fashion model. For a corporate environment, it does not suit so well, but it has a little bigger screen(15.0 ") based on a higher quality PLS matrix, exclusively SSD-drives are used, as well as a slightly more convenient keyboard layout and longer time autonomous work. However, you will have to pay a very tangible amount for this.

Ultrabook Toshiba Portege Z930 already looks more like a direct competitor to our Fujitsu due to its cost of $ 1400, although it performs in a slightly different category of 13.3-inch laptops. At the same time, it weighs even less (only 1.12 kg!), Its body is made of magnesium alloy, and a 128 GB SSD is used as a drive. But, of course, it cannot boast of a docking station connector and support for various corporate technologies.

Pros:

  • stylish and modern design;
  • small case thickness;
  • weight is only 1.4 kg;
  • Intel QM77 chipset with AMT support;
  • vPro technology support (only with Core i5-34xx and Core i7 processors);
  • docking station connector;
  • fingerprint sensor;
  • SSD cache with a capacity of 32 GB;
  • good autonomy;
  • possibility Windows installations XP and a discount on an update to Windows 8;
  • economy mode Eco;
  • optional support for 3G and LTE.

Minuses:

  • poor factory setting of the screen;
  • insufficient rigidity of the case under the keyboard;
  • strange implementation of a buttonless touchpad;
  • impossibility of self-upgrade;
  • speakers are located on the bottom.

Ultrabook Fujitsu LIFEBOOK U772 provided for testing by ITC-M, a distributor of Fujitsu Technology Solutions in Belarus

I am a Japanese company Fujitsu long ago entered Russian market and is now actively gaining more and more solid positions on it. An important role in this is played not only by the fact that the entire production of the company, unlike many competitors, is concentrated in Japan and Germany, but also by the constantly updated line of laptops.

And now we have in our hands new ultrabook from this manufacturer - model U772 from the LIFEBOOK line. The letter U in the model name tells us that this is an ultrabook that fully meets the requirements for this category of mobile computers. The dimensions of this 14-inch beauty are 327x225x15.6 mm, and the weight is 1.42 kg. Inside it has a dual-core Intel Core i7 processor with integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000, and all this is positioned by the manufacturer as a business-class laptop.

Two features immediately catch the eye - an incredibly beautiful and stylish design and the absence optical drive... However, with an abundance of other ports and communications, this is unlikely to be a problem. For the rest, let's consider in more detail what it is.

The package bundle of the LIFEBOOK U772 ultrabook cannot be called standard and it pleases. First of all, it is worth noting the presence of two power supplies - one for 65 W, and the other for 100 W, which will allow you to independently choose the power with which your laptop will charge, and, consequently, the charging time. Also included is a docking station, which is a huge plus, at least due to the large number of additional ports, which we will talk about a little later. Also included is a mini LAN to Ethernet adapter. And, of course, a few instructions on how to quickly get started, safety instructions and a list of official service centers... There is also a disk with Windows 7 Home Premium SP 1 64-bit operating system.

Design

Ultrabook LIFEBOOK U772 will fall in love at first sight due to its excellent color scheme, shape and materials. We got a model made in red and black tones, which in itself looks very impressive, although the manufacturer also offers a dark silver color.

The laptop case has a clear rectangular shape with only slightly rounded corners. The top cover is made of sleek metal, while the center features a chrome-plated company logo - a stylized infinity sign. In order for the laptop to have an excellent Wi-Fi and 4G signal, there is a plastic insert at the front edge of the lid, where the antennas are located, but the transition between the two materials is not noticeable at all. Although fingerprints remain on smooth metal, they are practically invisible and can be easily removed.

The bottom of the laptop is made of metal, painted in red, and is completely monolithic. We are separated from the internal filling, including the battery, by ten screws hidden behind rubber plugs. There are also five small rubber feet, which should prevent the laptop from moving on the smooth surface of the table, but, nevertheless, it slips slightly. However, the movement of such a light laptop could be hindered only by suction cups.

On the bottom there is also an emergency shutdown button in the event of a system freeze, as well as a ventilation grill, the advantage of which is an interesting stylish shape (which, unfortunately, no one will see), and a disadvantage - a very small size. However, we'll see later how this laptop handles the heat test.

The inner surface of the laptop is black, the sides and front edges are of the same color.

The lid opens very softly, without lifting the lower part behind it, so you can cope with this task with one hand. By the way, its opening angle is quite large - about 160 degrees.

Inside, under the keyboard, on the right side of the working surface, there is a fingerprint scanner, which has already become a familiar attribute for business notebooks.

By and large, there is nothing to say about the design of the docking station - it is monolithic and very compact, made of durable black matte plastic, on which fingerprints are clearly visible. But I don't think this is a big problem, given that the laptop hides it almost completely underneath. The bottom is also monolithic, but by unscrewing 12 screws, you can get inside.

In general, the appearance of the LIFEBOOK U772 ultrabook evokes the most positive emotions, besides, the build quality here is also very high level- the details do not move away or bend and, despite its lightness, it does not seem fragile at all.

Display, sound and webcam

To begin with, it is worth noting that the LIFEBOOK U772 has a frameless display, it looks peculiar, but at the same time there is a black edging directly around the image, which coincides with the texture of the display itself, but it can be easily taken outside the frame, albeit not plastic, as on other laptops ...

The LIFEBOOK U772 has a 14-inch display with a visible area of 31x17 cm and a resolution of 1366x768 pixels.

Frankly speaking, in such a laptop, we expected to see the display quality is much higher. Its surface is matte, so it does not reflect objects, but the contrast and brightness are at a fairly average level. When the cover is tilted back and forth, the image is noticeably darkened or lightened. The horizontal viewing angles are wide, here the contrast remains practically unchanged, but the display glares in sunlight, although the manufacturer claims an anti-reflective coating. For the rest, this should be enough for working on the Internet and typing.

On the underside of the laptop, closer to the sides, there are two small stereo speakers pointing out to the sides, which really creates a surround sound effect. The volume of the laptop cannot be called very high, but the sound quality is excellent, and the sound is clear, with adequate reproduction of musical nuances, with the exception, perhaps, of bass, but this, as you know, is a problem with all laptops.

Of course, the LIFEBOOK U772 has a built-in 1.3MP HD webcam with a status indicator. It is located in its usual place, but since the monitor is frameless, it seems that the camera is built directly into the display. Apparently, for the same reason, the two built-in directional microphones are not located on either side of the camera, as we are used to, but under the display.

The maximum resolution for shooting is 1280x800 pixels. The quality of the photos is pretty good, as for the built-in webcam - contrast and brightness are balanced, so video communication will be very pleasant.

Keyboard and touchpad

It's nice that both the keyboard pad and the touchpad are the same color as the work surface, so there is a sense of solidity and seriousness - no distractions.

The keyboard is located in a recess, and the keys themselves are very recessed, so their travel is very soft and short. You will have to get used to this when typing quickly, because it is not always possible to feel that the key has already been pressed.

It is very convenient that the function keys, as well as the arrow block, are reduced very slightly, but the strikingly large and right one immediately catches the eye, which, incidentally, turned out to be very convenient during operation.

The key markings are embossed and made entirely in white with a slightly grayish tint, which creates a pleasant contrast with the black background. LED Indicators, indicating the inclusion of modes, and are located above the keyboard.

Right there, between the indicators and the power button, there is an Eco button, which allows you to quickly switch to a special energy saving mode developed by Fujitsu - Fujitsu Computers EcoSetting.

There are no separate multimedia keys, but their main functions are performed by the keys - in combination with the pressed one.

The touchpad is slightly displaced to the left, has clear boundaries, but the color does not differ in any way from the working area. The surface is smooth, very pleasant to the touch and easy to work with. The mouse keys are separated here only by a thin embossed line, which is practically invisible to the eye, but at the same time is recognized by touch.

In general, working with text on such a keyboard is a pleasure.

Performance

LIFEBOOK U772 is preinstalled with 64-bit operating system Windows 7 Home Premium, which scored 4.9 points for Ultrabook performance. As you know, the assessment is based on the lowest score and it was received by the integrated video card Intel HD Graphics 4000, while the rest of the indicators turned out to be an order of magnitude higher. For example, the processor received the highest rating - 7.1 points, and the graphics for games scored 6.3 points. HDD and RAM showed a fairly good score of 5.9 points.

The LIFEBOOK U772 is equipped with an Intel Core i7-3667U dual-core processor with a clock speed of up to 3.2 GHz and support for Turbo Boost, as well as a 4 MB cache. More detailed information about the processor can be found in the screenshot of the CPU-Z application.

The integrated graphics card is Intel HD Graphics 4000 with a base frequency of 350 MHz. It cannot boast of outstanding performance, but video decoding, image processing in image editors, viewing Full HD video and some modern games she can do it. For information about the video card, see the GPU-Z screenshot.

The results of the 3DMark06 test showed quite average indicators - the total score was 3675, the units of the SM2.0 and HDR / SM3.0 video card received 1239 and 1491 points, respectively, and the processor was rated at 2607 points.

The following graph shows the results of testing LIEFBOOK U772 and similar models in 3DMark06 and 3DMark 11.

Using the Cinebench R11.5 program, we tested the speed of the processor and video card. As you can see in the screenshot, in OpenGL mode the video card was able to gain 13.46 fps, and the processor 2.41 pts. This figure is rather weak for a video card, but quite good for a processor.

The graph shows the results of comparing the LIFEBOOK U772 in the Cinebench R11.5 test with other ultrabooks.

The tested ultrabook has 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, it is represented by one Micron Technology 16KTF51264HZ-1G6M1 bar and operates at 1600 MHz. See screenshot for details.

HDD Western digital Scorpio Blue WD3200LPVT has a capacity of 320 GB, which should be enough for storing basic working documents, as well as your favorite music. In addition, there is solid state drive 32 GB, acting as a cache.

In our HD Tune Pro 5.00 benchmark, we found that the minimum read speed of the hard drive is 36.8 MB / s, the maximum is 135.7 MB / s, and the average is 74 MB / s. It should be noted that these are quite good results.

The results of a comparison between the Western Digital WDC WD3200LPVT-16G33 hard drive from the Scorpio Blue series and other hard drives installed in similar ultrabooks can be seen on the graph.

According to the results of the CrystalDiskMark test, we see that the sequential read and write speeds are 96.08 MB / s and 96.56 MB / s, respectively. Other indicators can be seen in the screenshot below.

In addition, we ran our comprehensive PCMark Vantage and PCMark 7 benchmarks, which performed well. So, the total score in PCMark Vantage was 8049, and the highest indicators were 16342 points - HDD Score, 12142 points - Communications Score and 10262 - Music Score.

The overall score in PCMark 7 was 3547 points, with the Communications Score getting the highest score - 18792 points, and the smallest - System storage score - 2182 points.

Comparison of the results of these tests on the ultrabook LIFEBOOK U772 and its competitors are presented in the graph.

Ports and communications

Let's clarify right away that due to the small thickness of the case, the number of ports on the laptop itself is limited, but the docking station solves this problem.

On the left side, at the bulge at the end, there is a headphone jack of a standard size (3.5 mm), one USB 2.0 port and a Kensington lock connector. Closer to the rear is a neat grille for exhausting warm air and a power connector.

The right side is more filled with the left, but given that all ports are concentrated on the back side, the wires will not get in the way during operation. There is a card reader that supports the ability to read SD cards up to 2 GB, SDHC up to 32 GB and SDXC up to 64 GB. It is followed by two USB 3.0 ports, with one of them you can charge connected devices even when the computer is turned off.

Closer to the hinges are the HDMI connectors and a mini LAN connector with an included Ethernet adapter. It is convenient that the network cable, thanks to the adapter, will be directed behind the laptop, and not to the side, which will allow you not to get tangled in the wires.

The back side is completely free of ports, but under it, almost on the bottom, there is a SIM card slot hidden behind a rubber flap. It is good news that LIFEBOOK U772 is compatible not only with 3G / UMTS technology, but also with 4G / LTE.

Heat and noise

Any user is uncomfortable when the laptop heats up. In this case, it is inconvenient to hold it in your hands, on your knees, and even while working at the table you feel some discomfort. In the case of LIFEBOOK U772, in some places under heavy load, the case temperature reaches a high figure of 48 degrees - this is the upper left corner, where the processor is most likely located. The rest of the figures are closer to normal - in idle mode, the minimum temperature was 28 and 29.4 degrees on the working surface, where the hands are located.

When heated, the temperature in this part also remained quite bearable - 29 and 34.9 degrees. On the bottom of the laptop, the maximum idle temperature was observed in the upper right corner - 32 degrees, and when heated, the temperature here was 45.4 degrees. In more detail, the heating of the laptop can be seen below.

No less important is the heating of the internal components of the ultrabook (processor, video card, hard drive). Everything is so compact in it that increased demands are placed on the cooling system. Let's see how much the main components of the laptop heat up in idle and under load. This will help us CPUID program Hardware Monitor... It can be seen that the processor, and, consequently, the integrated video card, heated up from 47 to 86 degrees, which does not go beyond the permissible values. The temperature of the hard drive increased by only 4 degrees.

As for the noise, it is noticeable, but not so strong as to interfere with comfortable work. With a noise level in the room of 34 dB, in idle mode the laptop is noisy by only 36.3 dB, but at maximum load its level reaches 48.7 dB.

Battery

A big plus in this laptop is the battery, which showed a good runtime. In idle mode, the operating time was 11 hours 12 minutes, which is one of the best indicators to date. Next, we tested the laptop with the Power Saving power plan installed, in Classic mode we got 2 hours of operation, and in Read "s" - 7 hours 56 minutes.

When choosing a plan " High performance"In the" Classic "mode, the ultrabook was run for 1 hour 51 minutes, and in the" Read "s" mode - 6 hours and 45 minutes.

The time required to fully charge the battery is only 1 hour and 27 minutes. To do this, the kit includes two power supplies of different power - 65 W and 100 W. We used a 65W block.

The notebook's idle power consumption was 14 watts, while browsing the internet it was 16 watts, and during the Furmar and AIDA stress tests it reached 31 watts.

Conclusion

The ultrabook LIFEBOOK U772 from Fujitsu made the most pleasant impression on us. Primarily because of its design and lightness, as well as the long battery life and the 3rd generation Intel Core i7 processor. In addition, the supplied docking station cannot but rejoice.

The disadvantages include the built-in video card, which does not show the results that can be expected from a top-end ultrabook, but again it is more focused on performing business tasks, which means that what you have with your head will be enough to work with office applications and graphic editors surfing the web and watching movies.

Whether such capacities are enough for you - it all depends on what goals you set for your Ultrabook. In principle, the potential of the Fujitsu LIFEBOOK U772 is not bad.

We are grateful to the Ukrainian representative office of Fujitsu for the laptop kindly provided for testing.

Like all other Japanese laptop makers, Fujitsu started with ultra-light and thin models long before the "invention" of ultrabooks. However, in the past few years, the Japanese have not responded to market trends quickly enough, so in ultrabooks the initiative was taken over by their closest neighbors - Taiwan's ASUS and Acer, as well as Korean Samsung.

Nevertheless, the Japanese do not intend to surrender without a fight. Albeit a little belated, but Fujitsu still developed a couple of ultrabooks: the 13-inch Lifebook UH572, as well as the 14-inch Lifebook U772, which we'll talk about today.

Ultrabook came to us in one of the most serious configurations: with Intel processor Core i7-3667U, 3G modem, as well as two drives - with a small SSD of 32 GB and a classic hard disk by 320 GB. But that's not all that the Lifebook U772 can boast of. Despite the bright appearance (however, there is also a more serious version with a gray lid), this model intended primarily for corporate users. Therefore, the display in it is not glossy, as in most ultrabooks, but matte. In addition, there is a fingerprint scanner on board.

⇡ Appearance and usability

The ultrabook case is extremely thin: the declared thickness is 15.6 mm, which is one and a half millimeters less than that of the same MacBook Air. At the same time, the body is very rigid: it barely yields when trying to twist, and, what is especially pleasant, even with significant efforts it does not emit any sounds. Fujitsu Lifebook U772 is assembled perfectly. The Made in Japan inscription on the belly warms the soul, although with the current automation of assembly lines, this is no longer as important as it used to be.

Red and black panels were used in the design of the case. Fujitsu often uses red in their notebooks, but usually these are small decorative inserts. The Lifebook U772 has much more red: the lid and bottom of the ultrabook are completely painted in this color.

Just in case, let us remind once again that for more conservative buyers there is an order of magnitude more relaxed version of the design, in which gray prevails instead of bright red.

Nicely, the laptop lacks a single glossy detail. True, the rough-sanded black work surface collects prints and dust quite actively. However, cleaning your work surface is a snap.

The opening angle of the lid is very large, in some situations it may come in handy

The Fujitsu Ultrabook is equipped with an island-style keyboard. The base of the keyboard is well fixed, but with significant pressure on one of the buttons, the base bends and pulls the adjacent keys with it. Letter buttons have standard sizes, none of the keys are scaled down. Even the [ё] key, which all manufacturers usually strive to offend, in the Lifebook U772, on the contrary, is one and a half times wider in width than the other letter keys.

The arrow buttons are slightly smaller than the standard letter keys, but still larger than most other laptops, making them comfortable to use. The key travel is slightly shorter than on most ultrabooks, and is also a little soft, but the actuation moment is still well felt. Key noise is barely noticeable even in a quiet environment, which, combined with the low noise generated by the cooling system, makes the U772 one of the quietest Ultrabooks around.

The touchpad is devoid of physical buttons. Not the best solution for a laptop aimed at a business user, however, thanks to this design, the panel turned out to be quite spacious - 98x60 mm.

A fingerprint reader is installed in the near-right corner of the work area.

There are only five status and activity indicators on the front. All indicators glow blue, and quite brightly, so when working in the dark at the minimum brightness of the display backlight, they interfere a little.

There is not a single useful element behind.

On the left side there is a headphone jack, one USB 2.0 port, a slot for a security lock, an external power connector, and a decorative radiator grill with rather thick jumpers between the cells. This grille looks unusual, but it can be assumed that such a design refinement does not in the best way affect the noise level that the air flow passing through the grill creates.

Most of the most popular connectors are located on the right, which will not be to the liking of right-handers. There are both USB 3.0 ports, a memory card reader, an HDMI video output, and a mini-LAN connector (an RJ-45 adapter as standard).

The bottom of the laptop is flat, but the ventilation holes are minimal: there is only one round grill directly under the fan. In the center of the rear edge there is a SIM card slot cover. Also on the bottom you can find a reset micro-button, which may be needed if the system freezes: after all, the battery in the Fujitsu Lifebook U772 is not removable, so it is problematic to turn off the laptop. The body rests on five tiny rubber feet that grip surprisingly well on any surface.

There are also speakers - for them the designers chose not the best place. However, this is not the only problem with the built-in acoustics, but we will return to it later.

The final sample came to us for testing, but not in the configuration in which it should be presented for sale. So, in our case, there was no adapter from a non-standard LAN-port connector to a regular RJ-45. But there was a port replicator, which, apparently, will not be in the standard kit.

The docking station has four USB 3.0 ports, a standard RJ-45 connector and three video outputs: DisplayPort, DVI-D, and VGA. Please note that only one of a pair of digital outputs can be used at a time.

In addition, various brochures and instructions were found in the box with the laptop, two power supplies of different capacities (the larger and more powerful one, of course, is designed to be connected to a docking station), as well as an OS recovery disk, which in recent times occurs less and less often - mainly only in models aimed at business users.

True, there is no optical drive in the kit. A proprietary USB drive is optionally available, but the price is quite high. So it's easier to purchase a device from a third-party manufacturer.

Although Intel positions ultrabooks as lightweight, long-playing and affordable devices for the mass user, in the Ukrainian market such models are still in the top price segment... Accordingly, they have to be promoted and sold more as fashion solutions, to a certain extent alienating business users, for whom functionality, reliability and ergonomics are in the first place, and not original design or premium materials. However, who said that it is impossible to combine these dissimilar concepts in one device? Is it stylish metal case cannot be sufficiently protected and comfortable to work with? Fujitsu decided to prove that it is quite possible and has created a 14-inch ultrabook for professional use LifeBook U772, a review of which we bring to your attention.

Equipment

Ultrabook Fujitsu LifeBook U772 is positioned as a professional solution, which you begin to understand immediately after getting acquainted with an unassuming box, the design of which was clearly done by a packaging specialist, not a designer. Apparently, at his leisure, this person is fond of the art of origami, which directly affected the design of two cardboard boxes for a laptop and accessories (see the video review for the process of unpacking the ultrabook).

The first pleasantly surprises with a helpfully drop-down set of instructions and a separately located pull-out “shelf” with a charger. To open the second box, you will have to think a little, but the reward for the solved puzzle will be a port replicator with a separate power supply and a solid set of additional connectors.

Thus, from the very beginning, the model Fujitsu LifeBook U772 sets up a serious mood. No “gift” boxes made of black or white cardboard with a designer photo of the device in a winning perspective, but a practical box made of unpainted cardboard, which does not require a separate “transport capsule”. And of course, a docking station with a set of connectors that you will not find in any other desktop.

Design

We got the red version Fujitsu LifeBook U772, focused on the weaker sex and the most daring (or most stylish) professionals. For employees who follow a strict dress code, there is also a calm silver-black version of the model.

The body of the Ultrabook is completely made of magnesium alloy, while the outer lid and bottom are matte, and for working panel used a characteristic horizontally oriented texture.

Flat lid Fujitsu LifeBook U772 embellished with a silver metallic logo and brand name. Its far part smoothly merges into a wide shelf hinge, so there are no connectors on the back of the case.

The base of the case is made of the same material as the cover. There are no hatches for access to the internal components, the locations of the mounting screws are covered with rubber plugs. Under the processor cooler there is a round hole with a characteristic grille, and false speaker grilles are placed in the corners closest to the user. There is also a forced reboot hole on the bottom, a proprietary connector for a docking station and a SIM card slot hidden under the cover.

To the front Fujitsu LifeBook U772 a row of five status indicators has been taken out. On the left side of the case, you can find an audio output, a USB 2.0 connector, a hole for a Kensington lock, as well as a radiator for the cooling system and a charger socket. On the right side there is a card reader, a pair USB connectors 3.0, full-size HDMI and compact mini-RJ45 port, to connect to which you need to use the included adapter.

In the upper part of the operating panel there is a power button illuminated in blue, three standard indicators of the typing mode and a button for switching to an economical mode of operation. The island keyboard is located in a small recess, it is distinguished by a small key travel, an unusually large Enter key and a nicely highlighted block of arrows. The touchpad is not too large, without separate hardware keys. A fingerprint scanner is located in the right corner of the palm area.

Thus, in the red version of the design Fujitsu LifeBook U772 looks very attractive (and for some even too attractive), while the gray modification, on the contrary, practically does not attract the attention of others. For a busy ultrabook owner, both versions look absolutely identical, since the main surface and the bezel of the screen are equally black.

Screen

Display unit Fujitsu LifeBook U772 can be easily opened with one hand, the maximum tilt angle is 155 degrees, which is noticeably above average. The screen is made according to a frameless scheme, the matrix is covered with non-reflective matte plastic.

The Ultrabook uses an absolutely standard 14-inch TN-matrix with a resolution of 1366 by 768 pixels, although higher pixel densities could be expected from a professional solution. Viewing angles and color reproduction were expected to be rated “below average”, the image is muted due to the protective matte plastic above the matrix. The brightness range is adjustable from 5 to 140 cd / m2 within 11 gradations.

Functionality

Like all ultrabooks of the second half of 2012, Fujitsu LifeBook U772 built on the Intel Ivy Bridge platform, and only economical Core processors i5 and Core i7. There is one SODIMM slot available, so the maximum amount of RAM is 8 GB, and the storage can be either an SSD or a hybrid hard drive.

The test configuration is equipped with an Intel Core i7-3667U processor, four gigabytes of RAM and a 320 GB hard drive, working in conjunction with a 32 GB SSD cache.

In this configuration, the ultrabook Fujitsu LifeBook U772 scored 3,750 points in PCmark7, 830 points in 3Dmark11 and 4.9 points in the Windows performance index. From a non-removable four-cell battery with a capacity of 45 Wh, the ultrabook worked for almost an hour and a half in maximum load mode and more than 6 hours in read emulation mode.

Exploitation

During operation Fujitsu LifeBook U772 I liked the small thickness of the case and the minimum weight of the ultrabook, which is only 1.43 kg (plus 410 grams will pull Charger).

The price paid for minimalism was the rigidity of the case, which is quite easy to “push” in the open state. For modifications with HDD, an accelerometer is used that parks the hard drive heads at dangerous accelerations.

Active users will certainly appreciate the optional 4G modem, but office dwellers will rather like the optional port replicator. Its weight is 685 grams plus a separate weighty power supply with a power of 100 W and a weight of 580 grams, which will allow you to safely leave the ultrabook charger at home.

By setting Fujitsu LifeBook U772 in the docking station, you get a number of additional ports: 4 USB 3.0, full-size RJ45 and three video outputs at once: D-sub, DVI and DisplayPort. But there is no built-in battery here, this is a typical desktop solution, focused on operation at a permanent workplace near a power outlet.

Note that in addition to the ports, you get an ergonomic tilt of the working panel, a duplicate power button and a convenient lever for quickly removing the ultrabook from the dock.
