Core i9 processors. The most powerful Intel processor. ⇡ Skylake-X processors: general information

In the case of Intel processors, we have two completely different microarchitectures. And two representatives of Skylake-X differ in the number of cores and their frequencies, but have the same memory controller and the same mesh network (with the same 2.4 GHz clock frequency). They are marking about the same level, and this level is not too different from the Core i7-8700K.

If you look at the detailed results of the programs included in the group, you will easily notice that the 7980XE noticeably outperforms the 7900X where it is necessary to count something “in the background”, but cannot boast of anything in interactive applications. In SolidWorks, it loses even to the Core i7-7800X, that is, to the younger Skylake-X for LGA2066 (however, both Ryzen Threadrippers lose to their “halves” in this application, which, however, does not pull consolation). In the end, it became the fastest tested, but it is more correct to consider it equal to 1950X. Half as cheap. And to a greater extent overtaking its partner in price sparring.

The end result looks rather funny - in fact, with the "autumn products" Intel won back AMD's breakthrough in improving processor performance. Anyway, accurate to the milliliter top-end processors for LGA1151 and LGA2066 work a little faster than for AM4 and TR4, respectively. True, from a practical point of view, there is some sense in this only in relation to the first platform, since in its case everything is fine with prices, and there are other advantages. For Skylake-X, performance parity is observed only at different prices of solutions and vice versa :) But this is explained simply - in fact, there are not so many tasks in our test methodology for both Ryzen Threadripper and Core i9. Even though, at the request of workers we have greatly enriched it with multithreaded software, cutting out (literally live) a variety of interactions.

Energy consumption and energy efficiency

However, it should be noted that in such conditions the Core i9-7980XE turns out to be more economical than the i9-7900X. This is not some limitation of the board power supply and / or cooling system - in this case, the result would be the same. So just the frequencies in different load modes are selected competently enough so that the new extreme can not only work faster (which, as we have seen, just does not always succeed), but also consume less energy.

As a result, in terms of a combination of factors, the platform in its older versions has become more "energy efficient". Which is logical - with multi-threaded download large quantity low-frequency cores are able to operate more efficiently than smaller ones with higher clock speeds. A possible answer to why all manufacturers have already reached for multi-core in smartphone SoCs. True, for all the attractiveness of this approach, it is worthwhile to understand that a larger number of cores means a large crystal area, and hence its cost. And unpleasant side effects in cases when this very "multithreaded download" is not found. The latter can be compensated for by flexible control of the clock frequency, but the former has nothing.

Total

In principle, from the point of view of abstract technical progress, the appearance of an older sub-line of processors for LGA2066 can only be assessed positively. Not because previously such a number of cores was not available at all - in server processors, it has been found, as mentioned above, since the days of LGA2011-3. Just a couple of years ago, they asked about seven thousand dollars for an 18-core Xeon of a lower frequency, but now you can keep within two (at least if you look at the recommended prices). And 14 cores in the new family will generally cost less than 10 just a year ago. Whom to thank for this - let everyone decide for himself. But, in general, AMD also now “plays” in this field (which also did not exist a year or two ... not five years ago), and plays well - at least taking into account the final prices of the products.

The main problem is that such solutions are needed by too few users - it is not so easy to load them with work. In a home personal computer, it is almost impossible at all (in best case- only sometimes and for a very short time). But their development and even simple production is expensive, regardless of whether a special crystal is made or an assembly of pre-selected "successful" ones. Actually, that is why the prices of such solutions are noticeably different from those usual for the mass market - it is still not possible to bring them to the mass market. And are they needed there? Times when every step of increasing CPU performance personal computer significantly increased the possibilities of the latter, remained in the past. But still, such "steps", as we see, are being made (and it does not matter for what reasons), than those who still need such processors can use it with benefit.

The secret became clear: Intel responded to new AMD processors Ryzen not only introduced multi-core "monsters", which received up to 18 cores inclusive, but also lowered the "price per core" in the top segment.

Before the release of Ryzen, this processor manufacturer planned, according to data from the "road maps" that got into the network, to bring the new multi-core flagship Skylake X to the market in the summer with "only" 10 cores. After Ryzen's presentation, we were talking about 12 cores. When it became known about AMD Threadripper, everything became even more serious: now representatives of Intel at Computex told that the new Core i9 can have up to 18 cores. That's 80% more cores than currently found in high-end desktop processors.

Counterattack against AMD Threadripper

So now there are 18 cores: Intel is responsive to AMD Ryzen and Threadripper. Source: Intel

Intel's top model will be the Core i9 7980XE with 18 cores and 36 threads. Clock speeds and an exact release date have not been announced at this time. We believe that he will not appear until August. This is because the Core i9-7920X with 12 cores and 24 threads is also scheduled for August. Variants with up to 10 cores inclusive should start appearing in June. The reason for the postponement of the release date may be that Intel has included versions with the number of cores from 12 to 18 in its "roadmap" only quite recently. The TDP level for Skylake X models should be between 140 and 165 W.

The exact information is about which will receive 10 cores and a base clock frequency of 3.3 GHz, Turbo-boosting to 4.5 GHz. It should appear in June. Starting with the octa-core class, which will feature the Core i9-7820X, Intel is reducing the number of PCIe lanes from 44 to 28, which may limit throughput expansion boards.

Thus, for anyone who wants an ultra-fast system with several graphic cards and SSD drives with an M2 interface, you will need to take more expensive models. Intel currently offers 40 PCIe lanes in six-core models.

Skylake X: performance and pricing improvements

The new processors are not the latest generation in terms of architecture, but they still have some architectural improvements over their predecessors, which are likely borrowed from Xeon server solutions. In particular, each core now has access to 1MB of lightning-fast L2 cache (4 times more than current Kaby Lake processors). In addition, support for AVX512 is being discussed, which should provide a decent performance boost in applications that support it. Support is also promised random access memory DDR4 at 2666 MHz.

There was also information about prices. As usual, Intel strives to make a substantial mark-up, but in the “lower” segment there is strong price pressure from AMD, because this competitor always asks for a little less “for one core”. The top Intel model with 18 cores costs about 114 thousand rubles. 10 cores can be obtained for only about 57 thousand rubles. (instead of the previous 95 thousand rubles). An octa-core will cost about 34 thousand rubles, that is, about 28 thousand rubles. cheaper than before. AMD currently sells the Ryzen 7 1700 with eight cores for about RUR18,000.

Recall that in the near future AMD plans to present its top-class processors for desktop computers, which will receive 16 cores in the top-end version. Most likely, these models will decently reshuffle our rating of extreme processors. Yes, a hot summer awaits PC fans.

Opinion Chip: It's finally happening again!

What a development of events! Until recently, the market central processing units as if it were in a state of stagnation: AMD was in fact pushed into the background, and Intel every year introduced new quad-core processors to the market with a 5-10% increase in performance - monotonous, boring. Anyone who wanted more cores had to, as they say, stick their hand into the wallet much deeper.

And now AMD, with its eight-core CPUs, has not only shaken the market thoroughly, but is also threatening to take Intel's crown as the desktop processor market leader with the launch of its already announced 16-core "Threadripper" in June. This once again set Intel and, accordingly, the entire market in motion - a real feast for enthusiasts. However, ordinary consumers, for whom the price is far from the last role, will benefit from the upcoming multi-core competition of manufacturers in the coming months and years.

Competition revitalizes business - today this expression is more relevant than ever. Now it's up to the buyers who will choose the vector of further developments. After all, in the end, each of them will have to decide for themselves whether to continue to invest in the already familiar brand (Intel), or to support the catching up leader of the developer (AMD), which offers surprisingly much performance to those who purchase its processors.

At least for the time being, the best value for money, as shown by our desktop processor ranking, is with products bearing the AMD logo. On the other hand, in the summer, Intel may raise the performance benchmark one step higher.

Intel Core-i9-7980XE

In this article I want to tell you about most powerful processor Intel today for home PCs - Intel Core i9-7980X E. If a little earlier the most powerful was Intel Core i7-6950X Extreme Edition, now this 10-core processor looks pretty weak against the background of the new processor with 18 cores and 36-threads!).

The new high-performance Intel Skylake-X processor family is made using a 14-nanometer process technology, which is already an achievement in itself. After all, the current family of processors based on the Haswell-E architecture was made using a 22-nanometer process technology.

The release date of the new core i 9 line and in particular the Intel Core i9 7980 XE is spring-summer 2017. Now this 18-core is already on sale, in DNS (Samara) it costs 145,000 rubles. I have not looked in other stores, but I think somewhere else it can also be a little cheaper.

More advanced schemes for the production of processors on silicon crystals allow an increase in the number of transistors, which in turn affects the processing power.

So, characteristics of the most powerful Intel Core i9-7980X processor E :

  1. Socket: LGA 2066;
  2. Core: Skylake-X (2017);
  3. Process technology: 14 nm;
  4. Number of cores: 18 (36 threads);
  5. Clock frequency: 2600 MHz (max. 4400 MHz-Turbo Boost);
  6. 64 KB L1 cache (per core), 1024 KB L2 cache (per core), L3 25344 KB cache (total);
  7. Instruction set: ABM, ADX, AES, AVX, AVX2, AVX-512, BMI1, BMI2, CLMUL, EMMX, EPT, F16C, FMA3, FPU, MMX, MPX, NX, SGX, SMM, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4 .1, SSE4.2, SSSE3, TSX;
  8. Support for 64-bit instruction set - EM64T;
  9. The maximum supported memory capacity is 128 GB (DDR4);
  10. System bus - DMI 3.0;
  11. Bus bandwidth - 8 GB / s;
  12. Heat dissipation: 165 W;
  13. The number of PCI Express lines - 44;
  14. Energy saving technology - Enhanced SpeedStep;
  15. The cost is about 130 thousand rubles.

Well then, Intel Core i9-7980X E became the first in the history of it an 18-core processor (probably soon there will be a 20-core one). But the question is, do you really need all 18 cores for home computer?

Will all 18 processor cores be used? And even more so all 36 threads? According to the developers themselves, 18 cores will help you run faster in resource-intensive programs. For example, in programs for video editing, for processing media content.

But are these programs so widespread and how much work behind them? I think most ordinary users I'm interested in the question of performance gain in games. There are a lot of gamers now, people play GTA 5, Tom Clancy's Ghost recon: Wildlands, Arma3, in WOT, and for them this question is quite relevant.

I want to assure you that this processor is NOT "sharpened" for games! Modern games can use a maximum of 4 cores. The rest of the cores will simply not be involved. You can read what kind of processors there are in general to navigate.

Considering the cost of this "crystal" (about 120 - 150 thousand rubles), it makes no sense to buy it for games. It will be more profitable and rational to buy the top 4 nuclear processor, for example Core i7 6700 (Skylake).

The most powerful PC processor ever!

Therefore the processor the most powerful processorIntel Core i9-7980X E designed for multithreading. That is, it is "sharpened" to work with programs that can use more than 4 cores.

Why powerful processors like the i9 are needed

Yes, IntelCorei9 very powerful and very expensive processors. What are they needed for? Well, for sure you have enough i7 to enjoy all modern games... And even the i5 can handle multitasking on your home computer. This is all the past century. But technology does not stand still. Take a look around. Virtual reality is trying to penetrate our lives from all sides, from virtual travel to interesting locations and virtual performances for the purpose of teaching and ending with 3D-VR games that require more and more computing resources. This is on the one hand.

On the other hand - artificial intelligence- no less resource-hungry "creature". Of course, this animal is waiting for the first real ones to appear in the world. quantum computers to show what he is capable of. But even now it is necessary to prepare it for a new round of evolution on something. Therefore, processors will become more powerful and more powerful. AND IntelCorei9 and AMD Ryzen Threadripper confirmation of this.

Output

And to summarize this article, I am glad that the noticeable progress of central processors has finally begun. I've been waiting for him for a long time. And then from year to year, minimal progress in this area led to depression and suggested: “ What about our high-tech future? Will I live to see him at this rate?". Now more and more people believe in it.

As for your home computers, I doubt you will have to upgrade to i9 in the next few years. So don't be indignant about the prices of these processors. Those guys who need that kind of productivity will have the means to buy them, I'm sure.

Intel Core i9 is the next generation processor for today's demanding tasks!
