Also, using the My Computer application, you can find out the properties of the disk. Let's say we need to find out the data about partition D: hard disk... To do this, select the D: drive icon and select the Properties command from the File menu. The disk properties dialog box will appear on the screen, indicating information about the disk label, its type and the size of free and used space (Fig. 2). Instead of looking for the Properties command using the Main Menu, you can, by highlighting the disk partition icon, right-click - a context menu will appear, which also contains the Properties command.

The options of the File item in the Main menu of other windows with folders and icons have similar purposes (Fig. 3).

On the Service tab, you can check the disk for errors, defragment or back up data from the disk (Fig. 4).

Advice 1. Folder opens slowly My computer in Windows XP
Solution: - Go to My computer- tab Service(Tools) - Folder properties(Folder Options). In the window Folder properties in the tab View(View) uncheck the very first checkbox: Automatic search network folders and printers(Automatically search for network folders and printers), if it is installed and click OK.
This technique can speed up folder opening by 3-5 seconds.

Tip 2. When copying files, the No for everyone absent
In a number of operations in Windows (when copying several files, for example), the "Replace file?" Window appears, with three possible answers in the form of buttons: Yes, Yes for everyone and No.
Button No for all absent, but its functionality can be used, you just need to know how to press it.
To do this, click the No button with the mouse while holding down the Shift button. This works in all windows like this where there are only three options.

Tip 3. Error reporting
When working at a computer, situations often arise when a failure occurs in the system or some program freezes and you have to turn it off. In such situations, a window usually appears with a proposal to send a report to the Microsoft service, which most users are already tired of.

Solution: To disable the appearance of such windows, right-click on the shortcut My computer - Properties- tab Additionally, press the button error reporting and install Disable error reporting, and also uncheck the box But notify about critical errors.
We press OK and forget about these windows.

Tip 4. Removing unnecessary rollback points for system recovery.
From time to time, Windows itself creates rollback points for crash recovery. If you haven't done reinstalling Windows, then a lot of these rollback points can accumulate. By deleting them, you can significantly free up space on the C drive. You will be surprised by the amount of free space.
If the system is stable, you can do it fearlessly, especially since the last rollback point is not deleted!
Solution: We follow the path Start - All programs - Standard - Service - Disk cleanupDrive C(or the one on which windows is installed) - tab Additionally - System Restore- button Clear.
Next, we confirm our intentions and wait until the end of cleaning.

Tip 5. The installation process stops at the very end.
Have you ever had a situation when during the installation of a program or game in Windows XP, the installation process stopped almost at the very end? The installation progress indicator shows 99% or even 100% completeness and stands still, while the installation process does not end!
This happens when the path to the folder for storing temporary files of the installed program has too long a name and to solve this problem it is enough to specify a shorter path for such a folder.

Solution: right-click on the icon My computer... In the menu that appears, select the command Properties, then select the tab Additionally, press the button Environment Variables and change the values of the variables TEMP and TMP... To do this, press the button Change and enter a shorter path (for example: C: \ Temp and C: \ Tmp).
After that, you can delete the folders, the path to which was registered before the changes and calmly install the programs using new folders for temporary storage.

Tip 6. Adding virtual memory (paging file).
Sometimes there are situations when the computer suddenly exits the program and even reboots after that without saving data (this often happens during the passage of the next level of your favorite game). This is not even connected with the program (game) itself, but with the fact that some programs, and especially games, require additional resources from the computer, including virtual memory.
Sometimes, in such cases, an inscription appears in the lower right corner of the screen about the lack of this very virtual memory.

Solution: My computer(right click) - Properties- tab Additionally- in point Performance push the button Options- tab Additionally- in point Virtual memory push button Change.
We turn on the item in the C drive (or on the one where you have installed the OS) Special size and increase the values of the original and maximum size virtual memory, about one and a half times. Then click everywhere OK.
Recommendations:
1 - make sure your swap file is not located on system disk, but on some other (D or E), which is less loaded with work.
2 - set the minimum value of the paging file to 1.5 times the value of the RAM.
If the game continues to "knock out" (for this reason), you can try to increase these values again.

Tip 7. Find out detailed information about your computer.
Detailed information about your computer and installed OS can be found different ways including with the help of special programs.
However, there is one method in Windows XP that few newbies know about.
You can learn a lot with it useful information, including the uptime of the computer (how long the computer has been running from the moment it was turned on).
Do the following: StartAll programsStandardCommand line
Further in command line dial systeminfo and read the information received.
To save this data to a file, type systeminfo> info.txt

The saved file can be found in the folder: C: \ Documents and Settings \ username \ info.txt

Tip 8. Restore old folder windows at logon.
If you have important windows open and you suddenly need to turn off or restart your computer, then know that in Windows XP it is possible to make sure that the next time you turn on your computer, your important windows will be in the same place where they were before the restart.

Solution: To run this feature, you need to activate it. Go to any folder (for example, My Computer), select the item Service - Folder properties- tab View- check the box Restore old folder windows at login and press the button Apply.
This feature only affects windows (open folders), but does not affect running programs.

Tip 9. We hide information from strangers.
Sometimes it is necessary to hide some information from prying eyes... This recommendation is suitable in order to hide information from those who are not very computer savvy and do not know how to do it. For example, you don't want children to find a folder with important documents and accidentally delete it. For these purposes, Windows provides the ability to make this folder invisible (hidden).

Solution: To do this, right-click on the folder you want to make hidden, select Properties, in the window that opens, check the box Hidden and press Ok.
With this action you will assign the desired folder attribute Hidden... This attribute can be assigned to individual files as well.
In Windows, you can make such folders and files visible or hidden.
To hidden folders were not displayed, you need to do this: My computerServiceFolder properties- tab View- v Additional parameters check the box Don't show hidden files and folders- press Ok.
That's all. Now the folder is not visible and in order for it to be visible again, you need to do the same in reverse order and remove the attribute Hidden folder.

Tip 10. Disable Indexing Service.
Windows XP has a special indexing service that is designed to speed up file searches. For these purposes, it marks (indexes) files on the disk. However, this advantage often translates into a slowdown in the execution of many operations, and the refusal of indexing speeds up the execution of commands and frees up a significant part of the computer's resources.
This is especially true for disks with the NTFS file system, and therefore it is better to disable this service for such disks.
Solution: Open the window My computer, right-click on the hard disk icon and select the item in the drop-down menu Properties... In the window that appears, uncheck the box Allow disk indexing for fast searches... We do the same with all existing logical drives (D, E, etc.).

Answers:

BUT:
It is a virus. I remember that I treated my niece like this, he does this on purpose so that you cannot enable the "display of hidden files", and the files of the virus are just hidden.

Lexys:
Not necessarily a virus. Try to configure group policies. Start - Run - gpedit.msc. Everything can be configured there, including the properties of the folder to return.

Agata:
Yes, I also got to this: a shortcut appears in the folder with the name of the folder, in fact it is disguised exe file... We check its size (about 67kb), through the search we find all similar files that look like a folder, and delete from all places.

Paul Bell:
Show - hide in Explorer "Tools - Folder Options" HKEY_CURRENT_USER \\\\\\\\ Software \\\\\\\\ Microsoft \\\\\\\\ Windows \\\\\\\\ CurrentVersion \\ \\\\\\ Policies \\\\\\\\ Explorer parameter NoFolderOptions type REG_DWORD: 1 - hide, 0 - show.

Tremor:
Thanks for the educational program! This is after the Brontok virus such garbage. Moreover, at first I could not start the registry editor - the reg delete HKCU command saved me \\ Software \\ Microsoft \\ Windows \\ CurrentVersion \\ Policies \\ System / v DisableRegistryTools Maybe someone else will come in handy.

Atrem:
I also have such garbage, also after the Brontok virus, but something I can't do with anything written above! Where should you enter this: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER \\\\ Software \\\\ Microsoft \\\\ Windows \\\\ CurrentVersion \\\\ Policies \\\\ Explorer"?

Alexander:
Atremu: You must first press the "Start", "Run" button, enter regedit and look for this path there.

Sergey:
Thanks to Paul Bell for the help. After Brontoka, everything fell off. Nod32 cleaned all the virays, and returned some functions back to xp-AntiSpy.

If in Windows Explorer on the menu Service no submenu Folder properties…, what does this mean?

As a rule, the unavailability of the menu item Folder properties talking about possible infecting the system with viruses. The point is that virus writers set attributes for their viruses Hidden(and sometimes also Systemic). And in order to make it difficult for the user to visual definitions of viruses (in this case, there is no hope for antivirus: if viruses have entered the system, then the antivirus is either absent, or cannot identify them, or is "killed"), and the menu item is deleted Folder properties... Moreover, in Windows Registry a parameter is created in the section REG_DWORD NoFolderOptions with the meaning 1 .

How to restore a menu item Folder properties

Even after removing the virus that banned the menu item Folder properties, it remains inaccessible (no antivirus menu item Folder properties does not restore). To restore it, click Start > Run… –> in field Open: enter gpedit.msc > OK> Group policy > Local Computer Policy> User configuration> Administrative Templates> Windows components > Explorer> right in the window Conductor by double-clicking the left button on the line Remove the "Folder Options" command from the "Tools" menu(Default state Not set) call the window Properties: Remove "Folder Options" command from the "Tools" menu > switch installed Switched on > put Disabled(or Not set) > Apply > OK.

Close the window Group policy... For changes to take effect without rebooting PC minimize all open windows (by clicking the Minimize all windows on the panel Quick start, or by pressing the keyboard shortcut – logo keys Windows + D), press the key F5(or right-click on the icon-free surface Desktop, in the opened click Refresh).

If launch Registry Editor not blocked (which is rare after a virus attack), to restore the menu item Folder properties can be edited Registry: Start > Run… – > in the field Open: enter regedit > OK> will open Registry editor... In chapter you need to find the parameter REG_DWORD NoFolderOptions and set its value 0 (or remove this parameter altogether).

Attention! When working with Windows Registry Editor you should be careful, otherwise you can edit it so that you have to reinstall the operating system! ..

If Registry editor does not start, see .

Notes (edit)

1. Dialog box Folder properties allows users to set many parameters and properties Windows Explorer such as parameters Desktop Active Desktop, presentation of folders in the form of web pages, offline files, hidden system files, various types of files.

2. Group Policy Remove the "Folder Options" command from the "Tools" menu removes the command Folder properties from all menus Windows Explorer and removes the icon Folder properties from Control panels... As a result, users cannot use the dialog Folder properties.

3. When the user is working

Changing the properties of folders allows you to customize them appearance, search, display of hidden and system items, display of file extensions and much more. But in order to make these adjustments, you must first go to the folder settings window. Let's see in what ways you can accomplish this task in Windows 7.

Although we often use the more familiar term "Folder Options" inherited from Windows XP, in Windows 7 this setting it would be more correct to call it "Folder Options".

There are global folder settings and individual directory properties. It is required to distinguish between these concepts. Basically, we will describe just the transition to the global settings. There are several ways to go to folder settings. We will talk about them in detail below.

Method 1: Arrange menu

First, let's look at the most popular option for opening the "Folder Options" in Windows 7 - through the menu "Arrange".

Attention! Despite the fact that you go to properties in a separate directory, the changes made in the "Folder Options" window will affect all directories of the operating system.

Method 2: Explorer menu

You can also go to the tool we need directly through the menu Explorer... But the fact is that, unlike Windows XP, the "seven" this menu hidden by default. Therefore, you will have to perform some additional manipulations.

Method 3: keyboard shortcut

You can also display directory properties using a keyboard shortcut.

Method 4: Control Panel

You can also solve the task set before us using the Control Panel.

Method 5: the Run tool

You can open the directory settings window using the tool "Run".

Method 6: command line

Another option for solving the problem is to enter a command through the command line interface.

Method 7: Apply Search in the Start Menu

This option assumes using the search tool through the menu "Start".

Method 8: Entering an Expression into the Explorer Address Bar

The next method is probably the most original of all. It involves the introduction of a specific command in the address line Explorer.

Method 9: go to the properties of an individual folder

If earlier we considered the possibility of switching to the general folder settings window, now let's figure out how to open the properties of a separate folder.

As you can see, folder properties can be global and local, that is, those that apply to the system settings as a whole and to a specific directory. The transition to global settings can be done quite big amount ways. Although not all of them are convenient. It is most convenient to switch from Explorer... But the properties of a specific directory can only be accessed in one way - through the context menu.
