How to reduce image weight. How to reduce the weight of a photo. Reducing the snapshot in the Paint editor

Reducing the size and weight of a photo is as easy as shelling pears and no special online services are required. If you need to reduce the size of one photo, then you can get by with the program preinstalled in Windows. Reducing the size of a large number of photos can be handled by the free FastStone program, or you can use Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.

In what cases you may need to reduce the size of the photo:

  • photos are intended for uploading to the site (for example, for a blog, article, photo report from a trip) and the files must be reduced to the optimal size;
  • it is necessary to send a photo by mail (high quality photo is not required);
  • there is a desire to send a photo to the competition, where it is required to provide files of a certain size.
  • you need to upload a photo to a site that has restrictions on the size of the photo (in pixels - px) or the weight of the file (in megabytes - MB);

1 | A way to reduce the size of a photo in Paint (preinstalled in Windows).

Paint is good at handling multiple files, but it can take a long time to reduce large numbers of photos this way. Be sure to create a copy before reducing the file size, as Paint will overwrite the file with the new settings when you save it, over the original.

Open the photo in Paint (by right-clicking on the photo and selecting the desired program from the list - Paint), in the top panel, click on Resize (resize). In the menu that opens, you can select percentages or pixels.

2 | A way to reduce the size of a photo in Adobe Photoshop.

To resize a photo in Photoshop, you need to press the Alt + Ctrl + I key combination or go to the Image menu Image size. Watch for a check mark in the "Maintain aspect ratio" box. If you need to reduce the size of a large number of photos, then you should create an Action and then use it using automatic batch processing (this is a topic for a separate article and if you do not know how to do this, then read on - there will be an easier way to reduce a photo ).

There is another tool in Photoshop - saving files for the Web (meaning for sites on the Internet), where in one window you can immediately change not only the size of the photo, but also the degree and type of jpg compression, delete the metadata and evaluate the result (including seeing the weight of the final file). To open this Photoshop tool, you need to press the key combination Alt + Shift + Ctrl + I or go to the File menu Save for Web (Save for Web).

3 | A way to reduce the size of multiple photos in Adobe Lightroom.

In the Lightroom program, you can not only quickly process a large number of photos. It has a lot of useful tools and resizing is just one of them. To resize a photo in Lightroom, you need to select the files, click the Export button and adjust the settings in the Image Sizing fields.

Instructions

Resizing photos is easy. It is only important to choose your own, in which it is most convenient to work. The most affordable option for resizing images is to use the standard office application Microsoft Office Picture Manager. To do this, open the folder with the desired photo, move the cursor over it, right-click and select the option "Open with ..." in the drop-down window and select Microsoft Office Picture Manager in the pop-up panel on the right. When your picture opens in the application, find and click the "Change Pictures" button on the top toolbar. After that, in the window that opens on the right, select the item "Resize". Then set the image as desired. For convenience, you can use ready-made options. Select "Standard Width and Height" and select the desired photo size. Or set custom width and height.

To resize a photo, you can use another program that is available on every computer with the Windows operating system - Paint. Open the image with Paint, select the "Picture" menu on the toolbar, and then the "Attributes" option in the drop-down window. After that, a new window will appear on the desktop of the program, in which the dimensions of the image will be indicated. Here you can set your parameters. In this case, do not forget to select the appropriate unit of measurement: inches, cm, points. Or just drag the border change handles. Then save the result. Please note that this will change not only the size of the image, but also the photo itself: after all, you will crop parts of it.

If you have Photoshop installed on your computer, open the image you need to process using this program. Then click the Image button on the toolbar and select Resize Image. Set the required width and height, put a tick in front of the "Maintain proportions" item and save the finished result using the "Save As" functions in the "File" menu.

Also try some special online services. For example, the Resize Now site is perfect for this purpose. Working with this service is very simple: select an image, specify the required size. For convenience, it is suggested to use ready-made options: small (640 pixels), medium (800 pixels), large (1024 pixels), or set arbitrary data. If you are using simple mode, you simply resize the image. If you choose an advanced digital photo processing mode, you can additionally specify the image quality and use the "Sharpen" and "Grayscale" options. Then click the "Resize" button, after which you can download the processed photo in the size you specified by clicking the link with the name of the picture to the right of the image. After 15 minutes, the processed photo will be automatically removed from the site.

Another good site for resizing photos is Resizepiconline. Here you also need to upload a photo first, you can have several. Then, move the slider on the Width and Height rulers to specify the output size. Here, without losing image quality, you can change the image format from JPG to PNG and vice versa. After that, all that remains is to press the "Resize" button and, after processing the photo, save the finished result.

The online service Photofacefun works somewhat differently. To work with it, go to the resource website, upload a photo by clicking the appropriate button, specify the required image size in the special fields. In a few seconds, download the finished photo by clicking the "Download" button. You can also save the result by right-clicking on the processed image and selecting the "Save Image As" option. On the same site, you can apply filters to photos, impose frames, insert a face, use a photo editor and the necessary tools (crop photos, reduce, covers, avatars, wallpapers).

I often come across a situation when it is necessary to reduce the weight of a photo in order to upload it to classmates or send it over the Internet, or send it to the mailbox. In this post I want to share how to easily and quickly reduce the weight or size of a photo to an acceptable level. You do not need to look for any third-party programs or applications, everything can be done from the standard Windows XP.

What is the WEIGHT of a photo

There are such concepts as the size of the photo and the weight of the photo, with the size everything is clear this is the number of horizontal points by the number of vertical points, let's say 3264 * 2448, they are also called pixels. Another thing is weight, the weight is understood as the volume in megabytes. Let's say a photo taken with a good digital camera will have a weight of 4.04 megabytes. Naturally, this weight of the photo is not always convenient to transfer, let's say to e-mail, or there is a desire to reduce the weight of the photo. This is done very simply from the program included in Windows, it is called Paint.

So, select the photo of which we want to reduce the weight, click on it once with the right mouse button and select open with, then select PAINT and click on the left mouse button. The photo should open in the Paint program, see below.

Now, to reduce the weight, select Picture and Stretch / Skew from the top menu.

This window will open.

Now, in the Horizontal column, change the value from 100 percent to, say, 50 if we want to reduce the weight by half, and in the Vertical column, decrease it by 50 percent. Click on OK. Now click on File in the top menu, select Save As and save the photo. Everything is now reduced in weight. Note that sometimes it is enough to enter a value of 10 percent to significantly reduce the weight of the photo without losing especially the quality of the photo.

Often, the user may need to reduce graphic files, both their resolution and size in general. Such actions are most often required when posting photos on Internet resources or sending by mail ...

How do I reduce the size of an image?

Consider a couple of the most primitive ways to reduce the weight of a photo or picture. The simplest is to use the capabilities of the standard Windows graphics editor - Paint.

  1. Open the selected image with Paint
  2. Click the "Menu" item on the top bar and select "Save as ..." from the context list.
  3. In the window that appears, change the name of the file so that the original image remains unchanged.
  4. A little below you can change the format for the file, the best option would be - JPEG
  5. Click save and you can compare the size of the original file and that obtained by saving in Paint. I got that compression is achieved about 5 - 10%

Most likely, such a difference in size is obtained due to a certain encoding of the file when saving. As I have seen in practice, such a solution does not always work, and the result is best seen in the original photographs. So for example, you will not notice the difference when saving a small image up to 150 Kilobytes in size and a resolution of no more than 800 x 600.

Compressing photo size with Microsoft Picture Manager

The second method of weight reduction is more intuitive. In order to use it, we need a graphic editor - Microsoft Picture Manager. This program is supplied as part of, and is found in almost all versions of this product.

You can find the program along the path: Start - Programs - Microsoft Office - Microsoft office tools; or by right-clicking on the original image - select "Open with" and click the program you are looking for.

  1. Open the photo in Microsoft Picture Manager
  2. At the top of the main program window, find the "Change" button - click it.
  3. After that, you will see the side settings toolbar.
  4. After that, find the last two items in the panel that appears, which are responsible for the size of the image.
  5. Depending on the change in the photo, select the item. If you need to reduce the resolution of the photo - "Resize", if you want to reduce the file weight, then "compress pictures".
  6. Let's use the first item and reduce the resolution of the photo. Find the Percentage of original width and height “select and set a value between 1 and 99 percent, values above 100 will increase the resolution.
  7. I decided to reduce my photo by exactly half, which will be equal to 50% of the original resolution. Below you can see the preliminary calculations of the resolution.

  8. In order to save the desired result, you need to click the "OK" button at the end of the sidebar.
  9. After the changes, you should save the resulting photo in a separate file so as not to affect the original image. Click the "File" item at the top and select "Save As ..." from the context
  10. Change the file name or storage location!
  11. "Compressing Pictures" - is nothing complicated, just open a photo or picture for editing, go to the last item "Compress Pictures".
  12. and from the proposed list of compression patterns, select the required one.
  13. I chose compression for "web pages"
  14. As well as in resizing, you can observe how the size of the image changes, in my case it has decreased by almost 11 times.

  15. In order to save the result, do not forget to click the "OK" button at the bottom of the sidebar.
  16. In order not to affect the original photo, follow point 9 - 10 of this instruction.

Instead of an afterword

Simple actions for editing graphic files helped us to make our image several times smaller. And the main thing is that we do not need special knowledge and programs to complete it. Remember that most often, after such changes, the image loses its original quality.

The question of reducing the weight of photos is relevant for those who have just started to master modern technologies and work on the Internet. Before talking about how to reduce the weight (size in megabytes) of a jpeg photo, two questions need to be clarified. The first is how to find out the weight of the photo, the second is why you need to reduce its weight.

Find out the weight (size) of the photo

The fastest way to do this is as follows. We make a click on the photo (if it is on your computer) with the left mouse button, after which a pop-up window will appear, which shows:

  • file type (jpeg, png, etc.);
  • dimensions in pixels (width, length);
  • size in megabytes (for example, 1.89MB).

More detailed information about the image can be found by right-clicking on it and selecting the "properties" command.

Why you need to reduce jpeg photo weight

Suppose you download a nice photo, for example, from a site called Unsplash. The title of this service says - do whatever you wont, that is, "do what you want." And you do whatever you want by uploading a lot of all sorts of beautiful photos to the site from this service.

Then you notice that the pages on your site are starting to load slowly. And soon you receive a letter from your hoster with a warning that the space allocated to you on the hosting ends with a proposal to upgrade to a higher tariff plan.

Of course, I am exaggerating here, but it is quite possible that this can happen if you do not check the weight of the photos uploaded to the site. Some high-resolution photos are large in size, and it is impractical to upload them to the site without preliminary optimization.

How to reduce the weight of a photo online?

Today there are many online photo processing services. Take, for example, the well-known Online Photo Editor Pixlr service. Go to it and open the "file" tab. If the image is on your computer, select the "open image" command, if the photo is somewhere on the Internet, select the "open image url" option. Next, load the image that you want to reduce and click on “save” in the “file” tab.

Immediately a window will pop up in front of you, in which your photo will already be in a lightweight version. Here you can also change the file extension, for example, from jpeg to png and give it a new name. The quality of the resulting image will be of a fairly high level and it will be very difficult for a layman to distinguish it from the original.

In this case, we practically repeat all the above steps. The only difference is that we process the photos using the program installed on our PC. To do this, you need to open the photo by right-clicking on it, and then select the command "open with" and, finally, select Photoshop.

After your photo appears in the program window in the "file" tab, find the "save for Web ..." command. In the window that opens, two options for the photo will appear: the original and the copy. In the upper right corner, you can adjust the photo quality. The smaller it is, the less weight the image will be. It is better to leave the quality that the program offers by default. Save the photo with a new name and voila - you have a much lighter jpeg file ready to upload to the site.

Reduce photo weight online for free and quickly

Many of us have a Vkontakte profile. This popular social network hosts millions of images. The developers of this network have built into its code a mechanism for compressing images without losing their quality. To reduce the weight of a photo online for free and quickly, just upload it to your Vkontakte page. Moreover, it is not even necessary to keep it there. Right-click on the photo and select the "save as" command you already know, give it a new name. It's all. The photo will be two or even three times lighter than it was before.

Reducing photo weight with the Lightshot browser extension

And finally, you can reduce the photo by installing the Lightshot tool for fast image processing in your browser. It can be installed in all popular browsers from add-on stores. After installing the extension, a "feather" icon will appear in the upper right corner of the browser. To activate this tool, click on it with mice.

Conclusion

In this article, you learned four ways on how you can reduce the size of a photo using different tools. This topic is not deep, but important, as it relates to the internal optimization of sites. If you have benefited from this material, please respond in the comments or share it on social networks.
