The first thing to look out for in this successor to last year's iPhone Xr is the arrival of a dual camera. Despite the fact that outwardly the camera module turned out to be rather awkward (on the Internet it has already been compared with the surprised Pokemon Pikachu or with the hero of Edvard Munch's "Scream"), it really improved the shooting capabilities. The first camera with an aperture of f / 1.8 is 12 megapixels wide-angle, and the second with an aperture of f / 2.4 and also 12 megapixels is ultra-wide-angle, about which the manufacturer indicates the following: "With it, the image area is four times larger. Therefore, landscapes, interesting buildings, groups people, spacious interiors and moving objects can now be captured even better. " The second camera is also used when creating portrait mode. Another innovation in terms of photography - night mode... In camera phones on Android, such a function already exists, but for iPhones this is an innovation that has significantly improved the quality of shooting with a minimum of lighting, as indicated by the first users of the 11th iPhone. Front camera double 12 MP. In terms of video, we can note the appearance of the so-called slow-motion, that is, a selfie shot in the slow-mo format (slow motion 120 frames per second).

Technical iPhone specifications 11: 6.1-inch monoblock screen. Screen type - IPS. The resolution is 1792x828. IOS 13 OS 64 GB of permanent and 4 GB of RAM, without a slot for a memory card. Apple A13 Bionic processor.

Dual camera... The first camera with an aperture of f / 1.8 is 12 megapixels wide-angle, and the second with an aperture of f / 2.4 and also 12 megapixels is ultra-wide. In terms of video, we can note the appearance of the so-called slow-motion, that is, a selfie shot in the slow-mo format (slow motion 120 frames per second).

In fact, the camera ends up with useful innovations compared to the iPhone Xr. The protection against water has improved, but it is unlikely that anyone would think to check it, because the manufacturer warns on its website: "Damage due to contact with liquid is not covered by the warranty." There is support for a second SIM card, but the second SIM is not full-fledged, but just an eSIM, which will not work in Russia. Otherwise, everything is the same as a year ago - the same monobrow, the same IPS-screen, even the diagonal of the display is absolutely the same.

MOSCOW, January 12 - RIA Novosti. Sales of smartphones in the Russian Federation at the end of 2017 in physical terms increased by 6% compared to 2016 and amounted to 28.4 million devices, according to the message of MTS, which has the largest retail network among operators.

"This is a record for Russian market gadgets, they are ahead of the indicators of 2014 - then 27.6 million devices were sold, "- said in the message.

In monetary terms, the smartphone market grew by 17.3% - last year retailers sold mobile devices worth 386 billion rubles. At the same time, the average price of a smartphone increased to 13.6 thousand rubles against 12.3 thousand rubles in 2016 and 8.9 thousand rubles - in 2014.

As noted by MTS, the main driver of market growth was the increase in the share of sales on credit. "Interest-free installments served as a strong impetus for the entire market, which to a greater extent caused an increase in the average price of a smartphone. Also, sales were heated by competition between Samsung, Apple and Huawei, which practically ousted other vendors and became the most popular manufacturers," explains MTS.

The most popular nonsense of smartphones among Russian buyers is still Samsung - the share of the Korean manufacturer amounted to about 25.2% in piece terms, increasing by 3.5 percentage points over the year, and 29.2% in monetary terms (an increase of 3.5 percentage point). The increase in the share was influenced by the successful start of the flagship models - Galaxy S8 and S8 +, which sold 2 times better than the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.

At the end of 2017, Apple iPhone sales accounted for 12.8% in physical terms (an increase of 1.7 percentage points) and 34.4% in monetary terms (an increase of 0.5 percentage points).

The third most popular brand is Huawei: the company's share reached 9.6% in units and 8.5% in money. The Chinese manufacturer showed the highest sales growth - its share in piece terms at the end of 2017 increased by 5.3 percentage points, and in monetary terms - by 4.7 percentage points. Xiaomi was also actively developing - they entered the TOP-5 manufacturers in terms of sales in Russia with a share in unit terms of 3.9% (an increase of 3.3 percentage points) and 3.7% in monetary terms.

"The higher dynamics of sales in rubles than in pieces is caused by the growth in demand for gadgets of high price segments", - explained in the message.

MTS analysts note that the shift in consumer demand in favor of more expensive gadgets is due to several factors. Users require devices with high-quality screens and good cameras that allow you to comfortably communicate on social networks and solve their daily tasks.

In addition, the popularity of more expensive smartphones is fueled by marketing promotions and financial offers. In 2017, one of the additional factors when buying a smartphone was cashback: for example, the MTS retail network returned up to 30% of the cost of the device to online wallet subscriber - and this amount could be spent on payment mobile communications, home Internet, housing and communal services, for repayment of loans and transfers, as well as for any other purchases.

On our site every week there are materials dedicated to the release of new products on the smartphone market. The reader sooner or later the question arises, what was or will be the market fate of the presented models? Which phone will become popular and break sales records, and who will have to gather dust on the shelves of stores and warehouses?

It is clear that a full analysis of the indicators of the huge smartphone market requires too detailed immersion in the topic, but in this series of articles we will try to answer the questions voiced. Let's see which smartphones are most popular in 2018, fortunately, analytical agencies provided a lot of interesting information based on the results of the first half of the year and the second quarter.

Smartphone market 2018: leaders

So which smartphones are the most popular? As a first approximation, the answer is very simple - these are Samsung, Huawei and Apple. By the way, in that order. But the situation becomes more complicated, and significantly, as soon as we raise the additional question - where? It is one thing, Russia, Europe or India, and quite another - China or the United States. Therefore, we propose to move on to studying the topic in more detail.

Smartphone sales statistics 2018 in the world

The global smartphone market in 2018 is experiencing a decline in purchasing activity. Phones are bought less often, although this is not true for all regions. In the first quarter of 2018, a significant drop in sales was observed in China, the United States and Western Europe. In Central and Eastern Europe, the smartphone sales statistics are better - the upward trend continues here.

The growth in sales of smartphones in Russia was noticeable, although this is more expressed in monetary terms, and not in the number of units sold. Russians began to buy more expensive smartphones, the flagship segment showed good growth.

At the end of the second quarter, the global smartphone market in 2018 grew slightly, but compared to last year, the dynamics are still negative. In China, the largest smartphone market in the world, phones are still purchased less frequently than before. Growth continues in Africa and Eastern Europe, but too few smartphones are bought here to have any effect on overall sales statistics. Growing markets include India, which is the third largest smartphone market in the world (after China and the United States).

All this information about smartphone markets and dynamics will help to correctly interpret the results that you see in the table. It represents the top ten manufacturers, the leaders of the smartphone market in 2018.

According to the results of the second quarter, it continues to hold the first place. But the Seoul-based company sold 71 million devices, down nearly 9 million from the second quarter of last year.

The negative performance is partly due to the fact that the Galaxy S9 / S9 + were not received as warmly as the Koreans would like. By the way, it is for this reason that the new one was launched earlier than usual - at the beginning of August, and not at the end of summer. The second reason for the fall of Koreans is that their positions in China are very fragile; there is no Seoul company among the leaders in smartphone sales in the Celestial Empire.

Global smartphone sales statistics are very disappointing for Samsung and Apple. The popularity of their phones fell down in just a year, while Huawei and Xiaomi only strengthened their positions in the market and do not intend to stop growing.

Falling demand

Analytical company Gartner reported a large-scale drop in sales of smartphones from Samsung and Apple around the world. According to statistics, the difference in sales volumes for 2017 and 2018 in the case of Samsung is tens of millions.

Apple's sales weren't as severe, but market shares for both companies declined markedly. Gartner's statistics do not include official information from Apple and Samsung - both companies do not publish data on the number of smartphones sold. Apple, for example, statistics, including from investors, in early 2019 amid low demand for the iPhone.

Disappointing statistics

Based on Garner's data, Apple shipped 209.1 million phones for all of 2018, holding a market share of 13.4%. The indicators of 2017 were significantly better: 14% market share and almost 215 million mobile phones sold in all countries of presence.

Samsung's situation is much worse. In 2018, it sold more than all smartphones - 295 million, which was 19% of the total. At the same time, a year earlier, its sales amounted to 321.3 million or 20.9%. In total, in just a year, volumes decreased by 26.3 million smartphones.

The statistics for the last quarter of 2018 are no less clear: sales of Korean and American tech giants were actively decreasing and at the end of the quarter amounted to 70.8 million smartphones from Samsung and 65.5 million from Apple. For the same period in 2017, the companies sold 74 million and 73.2 million phones, respectively.

Chinese are advancing

Apple and Samsung continue to hold the first two lines in the ranking of smartphone manufacturers, but the Chinese company Huawei is stepping on their heels. In the fourth quarter of 2018, its smartphones sold 60.4 million worldwide, and overall its market share grew from 10.8% at the end of 2017 to 14.8%.

The sales growth was also demonstrated by the Oppo company, which is located on the fourth line, and the Xiaomi company took the fifth place. The fourth quarter of 2018 turned out to be not very successful for her - sales amounted to 27.8 million against 28.2 million at the end of 2017, but for the whole year its share at least slightly, but still increased - 7.3% in 2017 and 7.6% in 2018.

Smartphone sales statistics in Q4 2017 and 2018

Samsung 70,8 17,3% 74 18,2%
Apple 65,5 15,8% 73,2 17,9%
Huawei 60,4 14,8% 43,9 10,8%
Oppo 31,6 7,7% 25,7 6,3%
Xiaomi 27,8 6,8% 28,2 6,9%
Other manufacturers 153,2 37,5% 162,9 39,9%

Competition in the smartphone market in 2019 has moved to a new level. On the one hand, the market itself is no longer growing, on the other hand, the onslaught of Chinese manufacturers has increased dramatically, forcing other companies to act much more actively than before. In this article, we propose to assess the balance of power using the current rating of smartphone manufacturers.

The rating is not based on any personal preference, but on the popularity of the devices. It is based on statistics from the European analytical company StatCounter. It calculates the success of manufacturers based on how much traffic their devices generate on the WAN.

We will consider the main positions of the rating in detail, clearly demonstrating how the share of manufacturers has changed over the past six years. The key points were brand indicators for the first month of each year starting from 2013 and ending in January of this year 2019. Changes in one picture major players market are as follows:

This is how the top smartphone brands have changed over the past six years to the beginning of 2019.

In order not to turn the material exclusively into dry numbers, we have added a lot of relevant information to it about how and what the key smartphone companies around the world are living with now. What are they focusing on at the moment or what else they are preparing to show users in the future. The text is being updated.

Since the beginning of the year, Samsung has been flexing its muscles like never before. The company is throwing a whole line of new smartphones into battle, the first to start selling devices with 5G, ultrasound scanners, flexible displays and stereo cameras (ToF) on both sides.

Specifically for smartphones, Samsung also produces displays, memory, batteries and camera sensors (for example, the 48 MPx GM1 sensor in the Redmi Note 7 is just from Samsung). However, 2019 turned out to be surprisingly difficult for the company, which is why the market share was increased by a symbolic 0.01% compared to last January:

  • 01.2013 – 22,69%
  • 01.2014 – 27,85%
  • 01.2014 – 27,85%
  • 01.2014 – 27,85%
  • 01.2017 – 33,71%
  • 01.2018 – 31,81%
  • 01.2019 – 31,82%

There are two reasons for the gradual weakening or at least slowing down of Samsung. The first and most compelling one is the crushing onslaught of Chinese competitors. In recent years, they have rushed beyond their native China and are actively exploring foreign markets, including the extremely lucrative EU market. The successes of Huawei and Xiaomi are already very tangible there.

The second reason is the relatively coldly received flagship family. Visually, they practically did not differ from the S8, but at the same time they received higher price tags. As a result, the sales were not as impressive as the Koreans would like.

Frame from the presentation of the smartphone family Samsung Galaxy S10

This year, the situation should be corrected by new ones (see the link for a comparison of all models, including the S10e), which have become a truly major, major update. They brought the following differences over the S9 line:

  • New design. Reduced bezels and miniature front camera opening;
  • Larger, better displays: 6.1 '' and 6.4 '' versus 5.8 '' and 6.2 '' for S9 / S9 +;
  • Screen fingerprint scanner. The most accurate and fastest ultrasonic sensor is used;
  • New processors. Exynos 9820 for Europe and Russia. Snapdragon 855 for USA and China;
  • More RAM: 8 GB in S10 | S10 + instead of 4 GB in S9 and 6 GB in S9 +;

Galaxy S10 lineup: S10e, S10 and S10 Plus. New design with a cutout for the camera in the display allowed to completely reduce the frames of the devices to a minimum

  • Triple main camera. In both the S10 and S10 +. The third module is ultra wide-angle for capturing large scenes;
  • New front camera: 10 MPx, shooting in 4K resolution or 60 FPS for Full HD (the best front camera in smartphones according to DxOMark);
  • Less thickness. 7.8 mm versus 8.5 mm in S9 | S9 +;
  • More capacious batteries. 3400 and 4100 mAh versus 3000 and 3500 in the S9 and S9 +, respectively;
  • More capacious drives. 128 GB instead of 64 GB in the base version. The emergence of versions for 512 GB;
  • (the ability to charge other smartphones);

The evolution of Galaxy S flagships from S1 to S10 +, as well as the very first Samsung smartphone on Android - Galaxy i7500 (top left)

  • New software: Android 9.0 and new One UI shell out of the box;
  • [only for S10 +] Dual front camera... The second module acts as a depth sensor. The S10 + dual camera achieves the best result among all front cameras in the DxOMark ranking;
  • [only for S10 +] For the first time, up to 1 TB of internal storage(previously no more than 256 GB);
  • [only for S10 +] For the first time up to 12 GB of RAM(previously no more than 6 GB).

In turn, Samsung decided to leave the latest ultra-fast UFS 3.0 flash memory, like LPDDR5 RAM, until next year, or at least until. In more detail about the differences, taking into account many nuances, we told in a separate article, follow the link.

The S10 also became the world's first smartphones with an ultrasonic rather than optical fingerprint scanner built into the display.

However, only flagships with the most powerful Chinese competitors Samsung, of course, will not compete. The full list of the company's key innovations this year is as follows:

  • Galaxy Mnew line for budget and mid-range models. Simple iron, but frameless design with a teardrop notch, unusual before for budget devices. In some models, the battery has an impressive capacity of 5000 mAh, in the upcoming M20s - 6000 mAh;
  • Galaxy A- development of the existing line for mid-range and basic smartphones. It also uses a bezel-less design with a petite cutout. Most models are equipped with a high quality AMOLED display;

Surprisingly, in some ways, the A80 surpassed the flagships of the Galaxy S10. It has a bezel-less display with no cutouts in the screen, a huge camera resolution and a built-in ToF module. Moreover, a powerful bundle of cameras is available from both sides

  • Galaxy S10e- a simplified version of the S10 flagships. It will get a flagship processor and camera, a side fingerprint scanner and a more affordable price tag. Also differs from the S10 with a conventional flat screen instead of curved at the edges;
  • Galaxy S10, S10 +, Note 10, Note 10+- Samsung flagships in 2019. The S10 / S10 + was announced in February, with sales starting in March. Note 10 and unexpectedly Note 10+ (there was no "+" version of Note before) were announced in August;
  • Galaxy S10 5G and Galaxy Fold- experimental premium flagships. The most expensive Samsung smartphones in 2019. S10 5G received a fourth main camera and support for 5G. It is not officially on sale in Russia yet. Galaxy Fold, the first foldable Samsung smartphone, will also receive premium hardware, the release has been postponed to the second half of the year due to difficulties that have arisen.

Galaxy Fold - six cameras from different sides, as well as two screens. One of them is flexible - 7.3 '' when opened on the inside of the device. The second screen is regular, 4.6 ", located on the outside

Well, let's see if this is enough Samsung to fight with numerous competitors, which will be discussed below.

2nd place: Apple - takes a hit against all Android manufacturers

Apple ranks second in the ranking. In the news, you've probably heard that the "apple giant" is faced with relatively low demand for new iPhones and has repeatedly reduced orders to factories in Asia for the production of these devices. This is true, but it is not worth dramatizing the situation around the Cupertino company yet.

Apple really can't sell as many iPhones as it originally wanted and break its own records in previous years. In addition, the company has serious problems in China and India. Tim Cook's hopes for these two markets as growth points have not yet been justified. The initiative there is entirely in the hands of Chinese companies.

In 2019 year Apple has already stopped indicating the number of smartphones and other gadgets sold. In turn, the last quarterly report for the last year showed the absence of even symbolic growth. However, the new iPhones themselves became more expensive and Apple received 29% more money from them.

The general lack of sales records is explained by the higher than ever prices for the iPhone X / XS / XS Max, as well as the small number of differences between the XS line and the X. Nevertheless, iOS devices were present on the network in January 2019 even more than a year previously:

  • 01.2013 – 25,86%
  • 01.2014 – 23,52%
  • 01.2015 – 22,75%
  • 01.2016 – 19,58%
  • 01.2017 – 19,73%
  • 01.2018 – 19,64%
  • 01.2019 – 22,85%

The main "culprit" of such a strengthening, according to the research company CIRP, was the iPhone XR. This model proved to be extremely successful at least in its home country in the United States during the Christmas season. According to CIRP, the new product at the end of 2018 started stronger than the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus combined in the same period in 2017.

iPhone XR, despite all the criticism, did its job, managing to save Apple from a significant quantitative decrease in sales

The iPhone XR is a very compromise solution. There is no second camera, and instead of AMOLED, there is a regular IPS screen, and even with a reduced resolution. The XR lacks 3DTouch, the bezels are larger, and the body uses simpler materials.

On the other hand, XR in many respects bypasses the not so long ago highly desirable iPhone X. XR has a similar design, but a more powerful processor, better main camera, bigger screen and better battery life. Most importantly, the iPhone XR is at least a quarter cheaper. As a result, it was this device that helped the "apple" company to keep from a strong decline in sales.

The larger and more expensive iPhone XS Max was not interesting to everyone, and the basic XS brought not so many innovations against the background of the iPhone X

2019 is associated with the resurrection of the iPhone SE - the most affordable iPhone of all. Apple allegedly returned to plans to release a second version of this gadget. After all, the same XR, albeit cheaper than the X / XS, is not a particularly affordable device either.

As for the future main iPhones, the names of which no one knows yet, trusted insiders attribute the following features to them:

  • Updated design with a reduced cut-out monobrow on top (according to other sources, the size of the monobrow will remain the same);
  • Third chamber. Its purpose is still unknown. Most likely, this is a module with a wide-angle lens or a ToF stereo camera;
  • Improved optical zoom(three times instead of the current two times);
  • New front camera- 12 MPx instead of the previous 7 MPx, recording slow-motion (Slow-mo) video;
  • More flash memory: 128 GB in the minimum configuration against the current 64 GB;

Looking at several sources at once, we can say that this, alas, is the most likely design for the back panel of the new iPhone 2019. Fortunately, there is still hope for alternative versions.

  • New version of Taptic Engine- a special vibration motor responsible for 3DTouch, which takes into account the force of pressing on the display and the tactile response (however, according to other sources, Apple in the new iPhones, on the contrary, intends to abandon the Taptic Engine and 3DTouch, respectively;
  • New technology for indoor navigation;
  • Touch ID will return, will be an addition to Face ID and will be integrated into the display;
  • More capacious batteries (+20-25%);
  • Fast charging and much more powerful Charger included (18 watts versus the current 5);
  • Accelerated wireless charging;
  • Reversible wireless charging(charging other gadgets, including AirPods);
  • Accelerated LTE Modem(+ 20-40% to the current limit of 1 Gb / s);
  • Wi-Fi 6 support(Wi-Fi ax): higher performance, lower power consumption;
  • Pencil support... Apple's branded stylus can finally start working with the iPhone.

There are a lot of concepts on the net of what the future iPhone might look like. However, this one is made by the reputable Western edition of PhoneArena and is based on the data of an insider whom they trust.

Of course, the above is not full list expected innovations and there will certainly be something else. The presentation of new products will traditionally take place in September.

The second generation iPhone XR, in turn, will be presented at the same time. The gadget expects a second camera on the back, a new front camera, new processor, support for Wi-Fi 6, an accelerated LTE modem and an increased amount of RAM from 3 to 4 GB.

3rd place: Xiaomi is the fastest growing Chinese brand in the smartphone market in 2019

In third place, having minimally squeezed out another Chinese company - Huawei, Xiaomi unexpectedly breaks out. The growth rate of Xiaomi is impressive in an amicable way. Back in 2013, StatCounter estimated the share of this smartphone manufacturer at a ridiculous five hundredths of a percent. In 2019, we have the third largest manufacturer in the ranking with a result of 7.88% at the beginning of the year.

  • 01.2013 – 0,05%
  • 01.2014 – 0,07%
  • 01.2015 – 0,52%
  • 01.2016 – 0,75%
  • 01.2017 – 2,16%
  • 01.2018 – 4,85%
  • 01.2019 – 7,88%

Last year for Xiaomi turned out to be very bright. The company has successfully entered new markets, opening hundreds of retail stores around the planet. Also, the Chinese released a lot of different electronics under their own brand, including the Mi Band 3 smart bracelet, which has become incredibly popular (in 2019, the bracelet innovations were already presented).

Redmi Note 7 is apparently the most massive Xiaomi smartphone this year. A large screen with a minimum cutout, 48 MPx in the main camera and unusual for affordable smartphones Snapdragon 660, will clearly make the novelty a hit of sales.

Of course, the main thing for Xiaomi is smartphones. In 2018, Xiaomi distinguished itself with the flagships Mi 8, M8 Pro, Mix 2S and Mix 3. Army budget gadgets have replenished Redmi 6, 6A and S2. The “middle” was filled by Redmi Note 5, Mi A2 and A2 Lite, Mi 8 Lite and Mi Max 3. Also in 2018, two completely new lines with powerful processors for a reasonable price were launched: Poco (PocoPhone) and Black shark.

If you are completely confused in the variety of smartphones of this Chinese brand, then here is our complete one.

Xiaomi started 2019 very cheerfully. At the moment, the company has already managed to present:

  • Redmi go- for the first time for Xiaomi, the release of an ultra-budget smartphone on Adnroid Go;
  • Redmi 7A- the most affordable Xiaomi smartphone on a full Android. Compared to 6A, there is now an eight-core processor and a more capacious battery inside;
  • Redmi 7- the novelty is equipped with a large 6.2 '' display with minimal frames, a new Snapdragon 632 processor and a 4000 mAh battery (versus 5.5 "", a weak Mediatek and 3000 mAh in Redmi 6);
  • - impressive with powerful Snapdragon 660/675 processors and 48 MPx main camera module. Note 7 Pro in Russia will not officially be: it is exclusive to China and India. But the basic Redmi Note 7 has already started on sale in the Russian Federation in the spring;
  • Mi 9 Is Xiaomi's key flagship for 2019. Armed with the Snapdragon 855, a fingerprint scanner integrated into the display and a triple camera with a resolution of 48 MPx for the main module. And also the fastest wireless charging in the world at the time of the announcement (20 watts);

Xiaomi Mi 9, with many ultimatum characteristics, is strikingly cheaper than other flagships

  • Mi 9 SE- a simplified version of the flagship Mi 9. It has a slightly smaller display, Snapdragon 712 instead of 855 and no wireless charging. But there is a scanner in the screen, a triple camera, including a 48 MPx module and a price tag one and a half times less than on Mi 9;
  • Mi 9T- the most current novelty. Equipped with a sliding front camera and an almost bezel-less display. The original color of the body. Inside the Snapdragon 730 and the camera, as in the Mi 9 SE. Here we are, which are now selling for about the same price;
  • Mi 9T Pro- compared to Mi 9, it is strengthened by the Snapdragon 855 processor instead of the 730, and also more fast charging 27 watts instead of 18;
  • Xiaomi Black Shark 2- a new generation of Xiaomi smartphone sharpened for games. Inside Snapdragon 855 and an advanced cooling system. The display adjusts to light and is pressure sensitive. There are stereo speakers, which did not find a place in all versions of the Mi 9.

Xiaomi should also have plenty of other new products for 2019. The next in line is the new PocoPhone F2, Mi A3 with pure Android (Android One) without its own MIUI shell, as well as a huge Mi Max 4 phablet.

Among other things, the company's first foldable smartphone looks especially bright, the prototype of which is captured in the video below. It is noteworthy that flexible displays for such a smartphone are also made by the Chinese company Visionox. Alas, there is no exact information on the details and even more on the timing of the release on sale.

This short official video in not the best quality so far, unfortunately, is everything that is known about the folding smartphone Xiaomi

4th place: Huawei - focus on cameras and technologies

Fourth place at the beginning of 2019 belongs to Huawei. The ban on sales in the United States and all sorts of pressure that is being put on the company have not yet become too strong a blow for Huawei. On the contrary, their market share is growing, and the head of the company in the next two years promises, even without the US market, to bring it to the second place in the world in smartphone sales, pushing back Apple.

The numbers below take into account both Huawei itself and its Honor brand:

  • 01.2013 – 0,85%
  • 01.2014 – 0,95%
  • 01.2015 – 1,57%
  • 01.2016 – 2,59%
  • 01.2017 – 3,78%
  • 01.2018 – 5,26%
  • 01.2019 – 7,87%

Honor's contribution to the overall statistics is definitely high: the brand's devices are sold in colossal quantities. It is noteworthy that the Honor View 20 (pictured) received a notch-dot screen for the front camera and a ToF camera earlier than the usual Huawei flagships.

Despite a number of budget and mid-range devices that have become bestsellers, Huawei still turns out to be the brightest flagships.

  • came out in the first half of 2018 and set the fashion for triple cameras, a huge resolution of the main module of 40 MPx, and also surprised with excellent image quality with minimal lighting;
  • became the flagship in the second half of 2018. The device switched to the most powerful Kirin 980, acquired an ultra-wide-angle module for shooting, a scanner in the screen, as well as the fastest wired (40 watts) charging. Moreover, it was the Mate 20 Pro that set the tone for wireless reverse charging, that is, the ability to recharge other devices;
  • launched in spring 2019. The novelty is the first in the world to use a RYYB sensor (40 MPx) with colossal light sensitivity. The P30 Pro also became the first smartphone with 5x optical zoom (50x digital zoom). Finally, the new ToF camera gives it great bokeh and improves AR performance.

P30 Pro with quad and P30 with triple camera. Main module - 40 MPx

Huawei seems to show that Chinese manufacturers are not only promptly following trends, but are already creating these trends, being one step ahead.

As you saw above, Huawei's market position has also grown significantly over the year. And although Xiaomi turned out to be symbolically higher in terms of quantity, Huawei could benefit more in terms of money. The reason is that, unlike Xiaomi, Huawei's prices for key flagships are significantly higher.

By the way, we note that for the second year in a row, Huawei's flagships have been in the lead in the ranking of the well-known resource DxOMark, which tests cameras, as a rule, of the most advanced smartphones.

The confrontation between Huawei and Samsung for the title of leader in mobile photography overshadowed Apple

To date, the trio of the P30 Pro, Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro are in key places in the ranking, competing with Samsung solutions. iPhone XS Max - the most relevant and expensive Apple smartphone got only seventh place.

At the end of May, Huawei, just in the midst of events related to US sanctions, despite everything, announced the Honor 20 Pro. These models offer the powerful Kirin 980 and advanced cameras at the most affordable price that Honor has always distinguished.

At the beginning of summer, the announcement of the trio of smartphones Nova 5 is scheduled. They will also have impressive cameras, but the most striking feature is the complete framelessness and the absence of cutouts in the screen due to the outgoing front camera. In turn, in the middle of autumn, the presentation of the Mate 30 will take place - the new ultimate flagships of Huawei.

Also note that sales of a unique flexible Huawei smartphone The Mate X, whose presentation, admittedly, has largely eclipsed the Galaxy Fold. However, the price tag of ~ $ 2500, alas, will reliably scare away most of the buyers. Realizing this, Huawei itself claims that prices for flexible smartphones will not be so high for long.

5th place: Oppo - an ambitious Chinese manufacturer

Another Chinese brand, Oppo, moved from sixth to fifth in the ranking for the year by the beginning of 2019. This is another prime example of how powerful Chinese smartphone makers are gradually squeezing everyone else out. This time, LG was unlucky, which moved to the sixth position, but more about it later.

In turn, Oppo did not notice the StatCounter analytics service a few years ago, so the calculation here starts only from 2016:

  • 01.2016 – 0,47%
  • 01.2017 – 1,9%
  • 01.2018 – 3,45%
  • 01.2019 – 4,49%

According to Counterpoint, Oppo is one of those Chinese brands that are actively involved in ousting Apple and Samsung from the most valuable segment - expensive, premium smartphones. Over the past year, Oppo managed to take 6% in it for the first time against only 1% a year earlier.

Oppo's shock growth rate has slowed somewhat, but nevertheless, the company is still confidently moving forward. Unlike Xiaomi and Huawei, Oppo is in no hurry to enter Western markets and mostly sticks to its native China and countries close to it, including India.

Let's clarify that Oppo, although formally an independent company, is more similar in structure to the Honor brand as part of Huawei. The fact is that Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus belong to the Chinese corporation BBK Electronics. Vivo and OnePlus in January 2019 owned another 0.6% and 0.5% of the market, respectively. However, Oppo is the main asset of BBK Electronics.

The current flagship of the company - Oppo Reno surprises not only with impressive camera performance (48 MPx + ultra-wide-angle 8 MPx + 13 MPx for 10x hybrid zoom), but also with the fact that they practically do not protrude from the body

In its home country, Oppo is a very powerful competitor to Xiaomi and Huawei, often pushing them to lower lines in all kinds of sales ratings. In terms of technology, the company definitely has something to “fight” with competitors.

For example, even last year's RX17 Pro pleased with the latest generation of the optical on-screen fingerprint scanner built into the display, which is faster and more accurate than the competitors. Branded charging SuperVOOC Flash Charge with a capacity of 50 watts - the absolute leader in the market in terms of speed. In addition, in 2018, Oppo became the first to use time-of-flight cameras (TOF 3D stereo cameras).

The company was one of the first to switch to safety glass Sixth generation Gorilla Glass. Oppo immediately took over from Samsung and a chip with a camera that adjusts the aperture to the lighting level. In turn, it was the flagship Oppo Find X that set the fashion for new-generation frameless sliders in 2018, which was later supported by Mi Mix 3 and Honor Magic 2.

Like the Find X, the Oppo Reno doesn't have any cutouts or holes in the screen. However, this is no longer a slider, instead of a moving rear part, a different solution is used here with a retractable front camera.

Oppo has a lot of surprises in store for this year as well. For example, in newest flagships Oppo Reno will have 5x optical zoom. Only the Huawei P30 Pro is capable of this today. However, Oppo will have a higher resolution of such a telephoto lens: 13 MPx versus 8 MPx for Huawei.

Oppo also decided to adopt from its Vivo allies the feature with a retractable front camera, which allows for completely bezel-less displays without any cutouts. Oppo has already implemented a similar feature in the F11 Pro and Reno. It looks like this is just the beginning.

For Reno, there is also a junior version with a simpler processor and only two main cameras. However, the retractable block of the front camera (pictured) is also present here.

6th place: LG - a well-known Korean brand that can hardly withstand the onslaught of opponents

If we follow the data from StatCounter, LG for the year fell not even to sixth, but to seventh place. However, specifically in our rating of smartphone manufacturers, we decided to leave LG in sixth place, and skip Mobicel, whose devices generate about 3% of mobile traffic.

The fact is that Mobicel sells smart devices mainly in African countries and a very significant part of these gadgets are advanced phones, not smartphones running Android. So in our slightly adjusted version of the ranking, LG remains in sixth position. Alas, this does not negate the fact that she is doing badly on the mobile market:

  • 01.2013 – 2,79%
  • 01.2014 – 2,99%
  • 01.2015 – 4,01%
  • 01.2016 – 4,28%
  • 01.2017 – 3,87%
  • 01.2018 – 3,48%
  • 01.2019 – 2,78%

Under the onslaught of Chinese rivals and another Korean company - Samsung, LG's market share has been melting for the third year. LG's mobile division has been showing losses for 15 (!) Quarters in a row. From some of the least profitable countries for itself, LG Mobile decided to leave.

LG G8 preview video highlights key features of one of LG's flagship smartphones this year

However, you shouldn't worry about the company yet. Fortunately, smartphones are not the main division and not the main source of income for LG. Surprisingly, the overall financial performance of the Koreans is in a significant plus.

As for smartphones specifically, the company is not going to show the white flag and close the mobile division despite the problems. The latter was recently directly confirmed by the head of LG.

LG's flagships are still bright. It was they who set the fashion for ultra-wide-angle camera lenses, which received a second wind in 2019, a few years ago in the LG G5. In addition, the devices of the LG G and LG V series are notable for many tricks related to sound, AI, as well as original creative possibilities such as creating cinemagraphs.

The LG G8 is the only flagship to use an iPhone-style monobrow, albeit a smaller one, instead of a waterdrop notch, hole or pop-up camera. In addition, in some markets, the G8 received only 2 rear cameras instead of 3

The presentation of the LG 2019 flagships came out slightly crumpled, as one day the company decided to introduce the LG G8, LG G8s and LG V50. And there is no clear hierarchy between them, who is more powerful and who is weaker - no. All three are based on the powerful Snapdragon 855. LG V50 is notable, first of all, for its support for 5G networks.

In turn, the G8 and G8s, among other things, are curious about the ToF camera in addition to the usual front one on the front panel. The ToF camera there opens up possibilities for controlling the smartphone using gestures. Other manufacturers have already tried to implement this, but with a new unusual camera, LG's gesture control can turn out to be really convenient.

7th and 8th place: Motorola and Lenovo - an American brand run by the Chinese

In 2014, the Chinese giant Lenovo acquired the entire mobile division of Motorola. At the same time, the company continued to produce smartphones both under its own brand and under the Motorola brand. By 2019, an interesting situation had developed here.

As a part of Lenovo, Motorola Mobility as a whole takes a hit in Western markets and has a slight plus in a year:

  • 01.2013 – 1,81%
  • 01.2014 – 0,89%
  • 01.2015 – 2,28%
  • 01.2016 – 2,18%
  • 01.2017 – 2,12%
  • 01.2018 – 2,64%
  • 01.2019 – 2,72%

A recognizable brand / nostalgia, corporate design and features, a successfully implemented plug-in concept, etc., are slowly driving sales forward. The brand's smartphones are still in some demand in the United States, and they were able to achieve real success in Latin America. There, Motorola is often only ahead of Samsung.

The first new Motorola products in 2019

In 2019, Motorola has already introduced four new smartphones in the basic and mid-range segment: the G7, G7 Plus, G7 Power and G7 Play models. The first two with a teardrop notch in the screen, the second pair with a monobrow. However, the announcement of this year's flagships with impressive characteristics is still ahead of the brand.

Lenovo, on the other hand, is not doing well in the smartphone business. In the west, the company did not particularly succeed in gaining a foothold, while in its native China, other manufacturers are still much more successful. As a result, Lenovo's already modest share is falling.

  • 01.2013 – 0,14%
  • 01.2014 – 0,36%
  • 01.2015 – 0,93%
  • 01.2016 – 2%
  • 01.2017 – 2,92%
  • 01.2018 – 2,87%
  • 01.2019 – 1,77%

Last year, the company began to make active attempts to turn the tide. The announcement of the frameless slider Lenovo Z5 Pro looked especially bright at the end of last year. With a price that is strikingly cheaper than the main competitor in the face of the Mi Mix 3, the device from Lenovo got a fingerprint scanner built into the screen. V smartphone Xiaomi there was none.

Lenovo Z6 Pro is the key smartphone of the brand for at least the first half of 2019. There are 4 cameras lurking on the back, including a 48 MPx main module. In Russia it was introduced only in August under the name Lenovo ZP

At the beginning of this year, the Lenovo Z5 Pro GT was released, which became one of the very first gadgets with Snapdragon 855.

And in the spring, the company introduced the ultimate Lenovo Z6 Pro, which surprises, first of all, with its cameras. There are four of them on the back. It is possible to merge pictures into a picture with a colossal resolution, to take pictures from two cameras at the same time. Moreover, the fourth camera is ToF (time-of-flight). In the Z6 Pro, it is tailored specifically for shooting video, and even helps with focusing.

9th place: Nokia - a former legend

The statistics for the Finnish company Nokia are perhaps the most dizzying in our list. It reflects the company's colossal decline since the days when a significant proportion of network traffic was generated by devices based on its own operating systems. The fall went on when the manufacturer, being in an alliance, and then part of Microsoft, released devices with Windows Phone.

  • 01.2013 – 22,15%
  • 01.2014 – 18,42%
  • 01.2015 – 11,24%
  • 01.2016 – 7,43%
  • 01.2017 – 3,41%
  • 01.2018 – 2,04%
  • 01.2019 – 1,16%

Today, the Nokia brand is owned by the Finnish group HMD Global, which is largely made up of former Nokia employees. However, now the company no longer has any of its own operating systems; instead, it has a fairly wide range of devices for different price segments running pure Android (Android One), i.e. even without any branded shells.

Unable to withstand the price war with Korean and Chinese companies, the Finns, according to StatCounter, continue to fall. To remedy the situation, the company is trying to expand its assortment with truly unique models. So, at the beginning of 2019 started Nokia smartphone 9 PureView.

In some sources, you can find information that in addition to five cameras, the Nokia 9 also has a ToF stereo camera. This is mistake. There is no ToF in Nokia 9, and the dark seventh hole (the sixth for the flash) is simply empty

The gadget is equipped with an unusual rear camera system of two color and three black and white modules (all 12 MPx), which, working together, should improve many aspects of photo quality. In addition, the device has a 6 '' AMOLED screen, last year's flagship Snapdragon 845 processor and a fingerprint scanner integrated into the display.

The first tests of such an unusual camera show conflicting results, but Nokia has already started releasing software updates for the device, which may well improve the shooting results due to updated algorithms. In addition, the idea of a five-chamber module can be developed in the following models.

Rating results and smaller manufacturers (brands)

StatCounter shows most clearly all the top smartphone manufacturers presented above as follows:

The balance of power among key smartphone manufacturers

Let us clarify two important points... Unknown (unknown), which occupies 4.43% in January 2019, means everything that the service records, but cannot be attributed to any brand. Most likely, these are various small Chinese companies and their devices that are produced for operators and sales networks in different countries.

A more detailed picture of StatCounter data for recent years, including those companies classified in the Other section, looks like this:

This is how the list of manufacturers has changed over the past five years.

Based on these data, we can additionally observe the decline of Indian manufacturers led by Micromax, which could not stand the confrontation with Chinese and Korean competitors. The same applies to the Taiwanese HTC, which is doing very badly, and the company has already sold part of its business to Google. Another Taiwanese company, Asus, has no luck either.

Of those who, on the contrary, are gradually increasing, we note Google with their Pixel line. And also the Chinese OnePlus with their branded "flagship killers". Smartphones of both companies generated at the beginning of January 2019 0.5% of all global traffic from smartphones running Android and iOS.

Note that some points, when studying the lists above in detail, can also seem very strange here. For example, traffic from Sony smartphones StatCounter for some reason still divides into Sony and Sony ericsson... Although the smartphones of the last brand have sunk into oblivion for too long and, apparently, the two indicators should simply be summed up.

That's all for us. We will try to update this material with new information and links to current news.
