In this article I want to talk about what the main page of a Joomla site is and how to create it. I will offer 6 options for creating.

What is Joomla homepage

Everything is simple here. The Joomla home page is the material that opens to the user when he calls the main domain of your site. Joomla home page can be assigned. It is important. Since it can be assigned, there can be several options for its creation.

I suggest looking at 6 options for the main page of the Joomla site:

Blog Featured Materials;
Standard page of materials of a separate category;
Landing page by SP PageBuilder by JoomShaper
Landing page extension Shortcode Ultimate Plugin for Joomla;
A page created on a one-page template;
The main page is like a login page (login to the site)

I'll show you how to apply all these methods.

Blog Featured Content

The classic version of the Joomla home page is a blog called Featured Content. I am using the CMS translation titles that we see in the admin area of the site.

A Featured Content Blog is the publication of assigned articles from selected site categories to a page that opens at the site's primary domain.

Please note that articles from the selected categories for selected materials may not be published on the main page. For this, the material editor has a special setting "Favorites - Yes / No".

To create a blog "Featured Materials" you need:

Create a new menu or select existing menus;
Create a new item in this menu. Select the type of this item: Materials - Selected materials;

In the settings of the menu items on the "Layout parameters" tab, select the categories of materials that you want to display on the main page. You can select "All Categories";
In the same place, choose appearance pages of selected materials, determining the number of columns and the number of materials on the page;
Set other settings for this menu item as you wish. Be sure to fill in the meta data. They do not affect functionality, but improve optimization;

Important! On the "Menu item" tab, on the right side, in the "Home page" item, set the value "Yes". This action will set the Joomla home page.

If you did not make the last setting when creating a menu item, then you can assign a menu item to the main page in the list of menu items. To do this, select the check of the menu item and press the "Home" button. Or just click on the star next to the menu item.

Important! There can be no two main menu items on the site.

Content page of a separate category

You can make the main page of materials of a separate category. V this case we are not talking about a blog, but about a list of materials in a separate category.

To create you need:

Create a new menu or select existing menus;
Create a new item in this menu. Select the type of menu item: Materials - List of category materials;

Next, select the category whose materials you want to show on the main page;
Fill in other settings for the menu item.

Important! On the "Menu item" tab, on the right side, in the "Home page" item, set the value "Yes".

You probably already understood that according to this algorithm, you can assign any type of menu item to the main page of the site. For example, make a home page, an authorization page (login to the site) or registration.

Main page - Landing page with SP Page Builder

There is an extension called "SP Page Builder" by JoomShaper. I wrote about him. With this extension, you can quickly and easily create a beautiful, unique, as well as different from the standard, the main page of the site.

After installing the SP Page Builder extension, you get a serious tool with which you can create a page using the tools of this extension.

The tools are simple. By dragging and dropping, you "hang" the desired content on the material page. Next, save the page. Then create a menu item of the type Materials - Material. Select the page created by the designer and assign this menu item to the "Main page".

Landing Page with Shortcode Ultimate Plugin for Joomla

The second extension that can be used to create the homepage is called "Shortcode Ultimate Plugin for Joomla".

Shortcodes Ultimate is a Joomla plugin that provides a mega shortcode package. It includes over 45 free shortcodes and 90+ in the pro version.

Again, the plugin will allow you to create a unique site page, which you then have to set as the main one, using standard Joomla tools. Read above.

Home page on one page template

There is another option to make your Joomla homepage unique. To do this, you can use a different template than yours. There are special one-page templates using which the Joomla home page can be created.

The essence of this method is to use two templates on one site. I wrote about this method here, I will repeat it here, briefly.

Find and download one page Joomla template. Look for and;
Create a material that will be on the main page (do not publish, just save);
Create modules that will be on this main (do not publish, just save);
Create a menu item with this material. When creating this menu item, it is important, in addition to all the settings described above, on the "Menu item" tab in the "Template style" setting, select the one-page template set earlier.

In the settings of the modules, remove their visibility from the new menu item. Show the modules that you created specifically for the main page only on the main page. For this, use the settings of the "Binding to menu items" module.

Let's create a page with content and a menu item leading to it.

How to create material

1. From the main menu of your Joomla dashboard, select Materials -> Materials Manager.

2. A page with already created articles will open. They can be viewed, edited or deleted, but for now we are not interested. To add a new article, click the button Create at the top left of the page.

3. In the field Heading enter the title of the article.

4. Insert its text into the main field. It is convenient to create materials directly from the admin panel, because Joomla offers a functional and convenient visual editor for this purpose, the main formatting tools in which are not hidden deeply and will not cause questions for most users. However, there are some possibilities that are worth mentioning.

The editor can work both in visual mode and in view mode source code material. To activate it, click Tools -> Source Code.

Pay attention to the tabs. The most popular action, besides editing the text, is adding pictures to it. This advanced feature is available on the tab Images and links.

Simple insertion of pictures (without wide possibilities) is not hidden so far: Insert -> Insert / Edit Image.

However, instead of downloading a picture file, this approach involves inserting the URL of the link leading to the picture.

In the tab Material there is a button Module, with which you can display all sorts of content (archives of articles, recent, most popular posts, etc.) directly in the material. Click the button Module and select which information you want to display by clicking on its name.

After the selection, a new line of code will appear in the material.

5. When the material is ready, from the drop-down list Categories select the section it belongs to (read how to create categories here). In addition, you can add the entry to Favorites if you click Yes in the area of the same name.

6. From the drop-down list Access choose who can view the material. The default access level is Public- this means that the page will be located in public access and anyone can view it.

7. In the field Tags enter the tags of the post.

8. When the material is completely ready for publication, click the button Save.

How to create a menu item

1. In your Joomla admin panel open Menu -> Menu Manager.

2. The page with the list of available menus will be loaded. Click on the one in which the new item should appear. The default template contains three menus: Top(top), Main Menu(displayed on the right) and User Menu(user menu that appears only after authorization on the site). You can add a new item to any of them, but I'll create it in the Top menu.

In it we see two completely unnecessary points ( Sample Sites and Joomla.org) and one ( Home), which needs to be renamed, it leads to the main page of the site. Check the boxes next to unnecessary items and click Add to cart, click on the remaining item, in the field Menu title of the opened page instead of Home enter home and press Save... As a result, the top menu of the site will completely change the structure.

3. To add an item in the Top menu editor, click the Create.

4. Press the button Select areas Menu item type of the opened page.

5. From the list that appears, select Materials -> Material(read more about other types of menus here).

6. In the area Material selection press the button Select.

7. Either find the required material in the list of available ones, or use the search - in the field Filter enter the title of your article and click Search... When the post is found, click on it with the mouse button.

8. To add an item, click the button. Save... pay attention to additional settings: in particular, you can set the parent of the menu item (with this function you can create submenus), set the access level (as in the materials), change the order of the items, etc.

Now you can go to the site and see what happened - click on the newly created menu item and watch your first material.

In "Joomla" there are two types of pages: static and in sections, to create a static one, go to the engine's admin panel.

Select the "Content" menu item, in the menu that opens, select "Static Content".

Click on the "New" button. In the editor that opens, enter the title of the page, specify its characteristics and properties. When you are done, click on the "Save" button. The page has been created.

To create a page in any section, you need to have at least one section and a category in it. Create a section: enter the admin panel, select "Content" - "Sections", click on the "New" button, enter the name and title of the section, for example, "New Section".

Create a category: go to the admin panel, select "Content" - "Categories", click on the new button, enter the name and title of the category, for example, "New category". Then select the section in which this category will be located, that is, "New Section". Save the settings.

Now select "Content by Section" from the "Content" menu. You will see the created section. Go to this section by clicking left button mouse by section. Click on the "New" button, the editor will open, enter the title and title of the page in it. Save.

Now display the link to this page in the menu: go to "Menu" - "mainmenu", click on the "New" button. select Content Object Link, then the page you just created. Enter the name of the link to be displayed in the menu. You can also change the position of the link in the menu using the items "Move up" and "Move down".

Many, having installed the "Joomla" content management engine, do not know what to do next, how to create a page and display it in the menu. And this is almost the most basic and simplest thing that you need to be able to do to create a website.

Creating a page in Joomla consists in attaching content (content - text, images, links, etc.) to a specific address (url) using the engine. By default, the Joomla engine already has the TinyMCE visual editor, but from experience, for high-quality and convenient page creation in Joomla, it is recommended to install the JCE visual editor from the developers of the Joomla engine (CMS). Getting started in Joomla.

We enter the admin panel (Control Panel) Joomla.

In the Joomla admin panel, click the button in the top menu MATERIALS, a submenu pops up, in it, when you hover over the MATERIALS MANAGER item, the item CREATE appears on the right.

Or after clicking on the MATERIALS MANAGER item, in the materials manager that opens at the top left, click the green CREATE button.

The material editor opens, where we will create the content (content) of our page.

Work in the editor to create the content of the Joomla page.

The default visual editor is TinyMCE. The principle of operation is similar.

But in this example we will consider creating material using the JCE editor, which can be downloaded or installed from JED and in general settings set the system by default. One of the advantages this editor is such points as the ability to create pop-up windows of images, Youtube videos, etc. An example of creating a pop-up window of images in the video below. But for such functionality, you additionally need to install the JCE MediaBox plugin in the same way (see the picture). After downloading and installing these plugins, we assign the default JCE editor in the general system settings to create pages and edit content in Joomla modules.

In JCE editor- enter the name of the material (required field) (1). The material must be linked to a category. By default, if the category in the right window (2) is not selected, the material is saved in the Uncategorized section. You can create your own category in a similar way.

Creating a material page address in Joomla.

The address of the material (url) when the SEO parameters (CNC) are enabled in the general settings will be automatically generated from the name of the material. The address can be created manually (in Latin letters without spaces, a hyphen between words) in the Alias window (top right) (3). Content creation (page content).

The working principle of the visual editor for Joomla (JCE) is basically the same as in Microsoft document Word. In the field we type text, insert images and links. To visually highlight the text and improve SEO, select the headings (4). Why select desired text in the format window and select the desired one from the list. In this case, Heading 1 matches the h1 tag.

You need to know that when creating a page, it is recommended to paste the copied text from Word, especially from another site, by pasting the text into a notebook in order to remove third-party styles and links. As a last resort, select all the text and click the remove formatting eraser button. (5).

Inserting an image into the editor.

To insert a picture, click on the Insert / Edit image / editor button (1).

In the Image manager that appears, select the folder on the hosting, where we will save the image file (2).

Or create new folder, we call it Latin letters (3).

To upload the file, click on the button with the image symbol with a blue up arrow (Upload) (4).

In the Upload window that opens, we can upload the file in two ways.

1. By dragging and dropping a file from a folder on your computer to the Upload window, (5).

2. Loading in the usual way using the Browse button with the magnifying glass symbol, select your file in the window that opens the desired folder on the computer and click open (or double-click on the file). (6).

3. Using the Upload button, upload the file to the dedicated folder on the hosting. (7)

Image processing.

In order for the picture to be inserted in the editor in the right place in the text, you must click on the uploaded picture in the Image manager! To form the image address (the path on the hosting, indicating which file from which folder, insert it into the page editor field.) (1).

You can set your own image sizes (2) (or later scale it in the visual page editor), set alignment to the desired page edge (Alignment) (3), margins (4), create a border of any width and color ( 5) and other parameters.

It is advisable to immediately assign the Title tag to the picture in the image manager - Advanced tab so that the picture is better searched for in the Internet search for pictures and the name of the picture pops up when you hover over it with the cursor on the site page.

After pre-setting the image, insert it into the material editor field with the insert button.

Further work with the image in the Joomla editor.

After inserting the image into the material page, we look at how it turned out, and, if necessary, adjust the appearance of the image by highlighting it. For example: scaling (resizing) is performed by pulling the squares (markers) on the selected image (1), the alignment of the selected image can be done in the same way as the text, using the buttons in the editor panel (2). Link creation in joomla.

You can create a link as follows - insert using the button with the chain link symbol. To do this, select the text, click on the link button, and in the window that opens, in the URL field, enter the required address with all the necessary settings for the link attributes. In Joomla, links to inner pages we write without a domain name. As a result, we created a link with an anchor (text).

Saving the page.

By default, when you save a page in Joomla, the state is set to Published. If the page is not fully completed, you need to click on the green Published button on the right and select Not published in the drop-down list.

For a page to be shown on the site, it must be attached to a menu item or category that has already been published and attached to a menu item, or the address must be inserted as a link into the text of the published page or html module.
