Why doesn't the brightness button on my laptop work? The brightness on the laptop is not adjustable. Adjust the brightness of the screen. No function button drivers

Many users, whether on duty or for personal reasons, have to spend a lot of time at the computer. And not the least role in the comfort of work is played by the brightness and contrast of the image on the monitor or laptop screen. Eyes can get tired from oversaturation or poor lighting. Let's take a look at how to make the necessary settings using a few simple tools.

How to change brightness on Windows 7 (or any other system) on a desktop computer

To begin with, consider the moment the system starts up. Normal image perception is usually associated with the user when the welcome screen appears on the monitor. It is only by its appearance that one can judge how comfortably it is perceived by the eyes. Both brightness and contrast immediately draw attention to themselves. Change one of the parameters to stationary computers can be completely elementary.

It's no secret that it is in desktop PCs or workstations that the system unit and the monitor (or several) are used separately. Their design is such that directly on the front panel there are one or two buttons: increase or decrease the brightness.

In addition, if, so to speak, in the question related to how to change the brightness of the screen or the contrast of what is displayed on the monitor, dig a little deeper, it is worth noting that any monitor has its own menu, called by a special button, in which there are advanced settings, including the mode of shifting the image, its stretching or narrowing, etc. As you can see, personalization is quite simple.

How to adjust the brightness of the screen on a laptop

With laptops, the situation is even simpler. Since the screen is an integral part of the entire design, there are no dedicated buttons on it, as is provided for free-standing monitors. Nevertheless, the question of how to change the brightness on Windows 7 or any other system (there is no fundamental difference) is solved using special keyboard shortcuts.

As a rule, the brightness parameter is changed using the Fn button in combination with either the function keys, which have up and down arrows and an image in the form of a sun. For example, in Fujitsu notebooks these are F7 (increase brightness) and F6 (decrease), on others - F2 and F1, etc.

In some models, such settings can be made using the same held down Fn key, using the additional standard right / left arrow buttons (sometimes up / down).

Adjust display settings on any Windows system

Another simple method to solve the question of how to change the brightness on Windows 7 is to click right click mouse on an empty space of the Desktop and select the screen settings (personalization) item from the context menu.

After entering the section, all available parameters will be displayed, which will not be difficult to change at your discretion.

Setting parameters in the power plan

These were, so to speak, the simplest methods. Now let's see how to adjust the screen brightness on Windows 7 using our own system tools. To do this, you need to use the power supply section, which is accessed from the standard. Here you need to select the item for changing the settings, after which two basic plans will be shown (balanced and saving mode).

If for some reason they do not suit the user, they can be simply changed. To do this, use the change item additional settings, where the adaptive mode is enabled. You can also change the brightness in the "Display" section, where the settings are presented in the category of display off settings.

Using the graphics card management program

How to change brightness on Windows 7 in another way? You can use the dedicated NVIDIA and AMD graphics management utilities that come preinstalled on your system.

After calling the control program either from the system tray, if it is in an active state, or from the same Control Panel, in it you need to find the display settings section, and then go to the item for adjusting the color of the Desktop (for NVIDIA, for example). It is here that you can change the brightness and contrast, and gamma, and image saturation, and much more.

The simplest comfort test

So, the screen parameters are set. Now you need to check how comfortable the perception will be. To do this, open a blank Word document. If you feel uncomfortable looking at it, the screen settings should be changed. You can simply take a blank A4 sheet of paper and compare it to the white margin of the document. If, when looking at both the sheet and the screen, the difference is not felt, then everything is in order. Finally, do not forget that when working at a computer or laptop for a long time, no matter how optimal the set parameters are, it is recommended to take a break for about a quarter of an hour every 45 minutes to relieve fatigue, including from the eyes.

As for the settings, the methods are quite diverse, and which one to use is up to you. However, if we are talking only about brightness, the buttons and will be the best option.But if you need to make fine adjustments, it is better to use software both the "operating system" itself and the programs included in the control software of graphic cards, especially since this is what they are designed for.

Assign a command to change the brightness of the monitor using a special program to the keyboard buttons.

When changing power modes, the brightness of the laptop screen changes. If the monitor backlight is turned on at near maximum power when on AC power, battery life is conservative, so the brightness is lower.

Laptops often have various problems... Some devices run out of battery quickly, making it impossible to work in offline... In some cases, the user does not know why it is impossible to adjust the brightness on the laptop. Sometimes the problems are related to software glitches. Brightness adjustment is found on all screens. In stationary PCs, it is easier to adjust it, since there are buttons for this on the monitor. In a laptop, you need to use special combinations or OS settings.

Why the brightness is not regulated on a laptop

If you cannot adjust the brightness, then, most likely, the matter is in a system malfunction. The most common problems include:

  • video card drivers;
  • turn off the screen;
  • lack of automatic updates;
  • processor drivers;
  • software crashes;
  • monitor driver.

How to find the reason

If it is impossible to change the brightness on a laptop, you need to take a closer look at the video card drivers. This is the most common reason. The problem appears due to the fact that:

  • the driver is not installed;
  • The software has been removed by the operating system;
  • incorrect update;
  • monitor is not active in Device Manager.

The story is similar with the graphics card chipset drivers. If the software was installed from a third-party source or through an automatic update, sometimes not all functions work.

Some may not be displayed completely, so it is impossible to even see where the brightness is adjusted. In this situation, you need to download the required drivers from the manufacturer's website.

How to fix the problem

Most users, having tried one of the brightness adjustment options, think that it will no longer be possible to adjust it, something is broken, and repair is required. But there are many ways to do this, while once adjusting the screen in the future, the monitor can not be touched for a long time.

Function buttons

On the keyboard of any laptop there are function keys. As a rule, they are set on the F1-12 buttons. To activate them, you need to press, for example, the combination FN + F3 (taking into account which key the icon is shown on).

If everything remains the same and the adjustment bar does not appear on the monitor, you can consider the following methods.

Taskbar (Windows 8, 10)

In the top ten, the adjustment is made very quickly if you click on the "Power supply" icon in the task menu. After the left mouse button on the brightness indicator, which needs to be adjusted to the required value.

Using the control panel

First you need to go to the "Control Panel", then select the menu "All items" and "Power". Then enter the tab "Setting the power scheme".

Here, the sliders adjust the brightness of the screen from the battery and from the mains.

Using the graphics card driver

The fastest way to get into the settings of the graphic card is to right-click on the desktop and find the graphic parameters from the list that appears (the location of the driver settings will depend on the specific software, in some cases it will be possible to enter the settings only through the Windows control).

In the chromaticity parameters, as a rule, there are different settings items: saturation, contrast, color gamut, brightness, etc. You need to find the required parameter and just change it.

Are the function keys active

As a rule, the reason why the function keys do not work on a laptop is the BIOS settings. Probably, they are simply not active in BIOS.

The choice of the menu where to look for the settings in the BIOS will depend on the laptop model. For example, in HP devices, you need to check the System Configuration menu: here you need to see if the Action Keys mode is active (to activate, you need to set Enabled).

On DELL models, the keys can be configured in the Advanced menu - Function Key option.

No function button drivers

Probably, the function keys (in particular, those responsible for the brightness of the monitor) do not work, due to the lack of software.

In this case, it will not work to determine the universal name of the software (drivers that can simply be downloaded and everything will start working) (by the way, you can find such ones on the Internet, it is highly discouraged to install them).

Taking into account the mobile PC model, the driver is called differently, for example: in HP - "Quick Buttons", in Samsung - "Control Center", in Asus - "Hotkey", in Toshiba - "Utility".

Incorrect video card software

If before that everything worked in normal mode, and when Windows was updated (during the update, another graphic card driver is most often installed) everything stopped working (for example, the brightness adjustment slider changes on the monitor, but everything remains the same), you can try to roll back installed update.

Also, the old working drivers should remain on the disk that came with the laptop, you can simply install them.

To do this, go to the Windows control, then to the "Device Manager". Then find the "Display Adapters" menu. Then right-click on the installed graphic card and then "Update driver".

Now find the tab "Search for drivers on your computer". Indicate where the drivers are located.

Probably old software (especially if it was just updated Windows version, and the system was not reinstalled) is already on the computer. To determine this, click at the bottom of the window: "Find from the list installed drivers».

Then select the old software and install it. This solution often helps, as old software is sometimes much better than updated software.

Windows 7 to 10 update

By updating the seven to ten - you can solve the problem with software for function keys (especially if you can't find it). Just in the new operating system there is a standard software for the operation of "hot buttons".

But it should be noted that this "built-in" software may not be as functional as the "native" one (some modes may not work, for example, automatic contrast adjustment taking into account the ambient lighting).

Hello dear friends! I am the proud owner of a laptop Lenovo Z 500. The laptop is good, I like it. But there is one problem with him: "The brightness disappears." My daughter has a different modification and I have not heard of such a problem from her.

There was information on the Internet that such "trouble" happens with tablets and phones of the brand. It's all the fault of the drivers installed on the hardware. I am not a great specialist in this field, but I know 100% a way to solve the brightness problem on your gadget.

How does this happen? I had several cases where the brightness of the screen on a laptop disappeared lenovo Z500... Once the battery was flat, the screen was dim, and I decided to turn up the brightness. As a result, the brightness has disappeared. Another time I just decided to increase the brightness on the "op" screen is dark. On the Internet, all sorts of other cases of how this happens are described.

As a result, one screen fades and the brightness ceases to be adjusted. No slider on the screen moves to show the brightness level of 100, but the screen does not become lighter because of this. In general, the reaction to the buttons and the cursor is the same. " No".

Tips on the Internet... Give different from stupid to workers. Clueless advice only takes time. Workers help solve the situation, but not always. This advice includes rebooting your laptop, tablet and other gadget, and when you reboot your product, keep the “Brightness” button pressed. Sometimes it helps.

Many people say: "If Windows 10 is installed, then you need to reinstall everything and everything." What happens because of Windows installations 10 and other nonsense. Don't listen to anyone. The first time I had this happened when I was running Windows 8, I don't remember anymore. It's now 10 and everything works great.

The screen has faded laptop lenovo Z500. Having studied a large number of sites and forums, I show you a way in which you will regain the ability to adjust the brightness on your screen. Does not require software knowledge and takes a minimum of time and nerves.

Screen becomes dim, but you can distinguish what is on the screen.

    Open the folder "This computer"

    Click on the "D" drive, the "drivers" folder opens

    Click on the "drivers" folder, a bunch of folders appear

    Click on the folder with the name "VGA"

    Click on the "Intel" folder

    Click on the folder “64” it can be “32” bit OS

    We click on the folder “9.17.10.2884” in my case, you may have a different number. It's just the version number of your driver.

    Click on the "Setup" folder

    In the window that appears, click on "Yes".

    In the next click on "Yes", we accept the license agreement

  • Again we click on "Next" and here, lo and behold, when loading appears
    screen brightness

Laptops are devices with which various kinds of problems often occur. In most models, the battery loses over time, which is why the device stops working autonomously. Sometimes the user does not understand why the brightness is not adjusted on the laptop. Also, problems can affect the system part and hardware failures.

Brightness control is an option on any monitor or screen. It is easier to change this setting on a computer because all monitors have dedicated buttons. On a laptop, you must use keyboard shortcuts or system settings... But it so happens that the brightness is not regulated on a laptop. Why and what to do about it?

Problem

If the brightness is not adjusted on a laptop, this may be due to problems with drivers for several devices at once, problems with keys and system crashes.

As practice shows, a common reason is incorrect work monitor drivers, graphics adapter, or chipset. Brightness control may not be used as often, but in some cases it can be extremely useful. Especially if the device is often used in different places: on the street, in a cafe or at home. Due to different lighting conditions, the screen image may be distorted.

Causes

As mentioned earlier, if the brightness on the laptop is not adjustable, then there is a problem with a certain part of the system. The most common options include:

  • turn off the monitor;
  • video card drivers;
  • chipset drivers;
  • lack of auto-updates;
  • monitor driver;
  • crashes at the software level.

Most of these problems occur on any operating system, so the solution is suitable for every user.

Turn off the monitor

Most often, the monitor turns off due to the fact that there was a failure in the system. Therefore, the solution to this problem lies in correct setting... How do you know if the monitor has turned off?

Opening the control panel, the user does not find icons for adjusting the brightness. Naturally, you need to immediately open the monitor settings menu.

In the screen settings, you can find a slider for changing the brightness, but nothing can be done with it. This again suggests that the monitor is turned off or the system does not find it. How then can the user see everything that happens on the screen?

The point here is that physically the display functions, but at the driver level it is displayed by the system as inactive. Therefore, all control parameters are temporarily disabled. This problem does not occur often, but it is the easiest to deal with.

Solution to turn off the monitor

If you do not adjust the brightness on a Windows laptop, you need to go to the "Device Manager". You can either enter the name of this menu in the search, or go to "My Computer", use the RMB and the "Properties" menu. On the left we find the required section.

A new dialog will list all connected to motherboard Components. Among them we find "Monitors" and "Universal PnP Monitor". If the display is indeed off, an arrow will be displayed next to the icon. It indicates that the monitor is disabled at the software level. It will be enough to right-click on it and select the command "Engage".

After that, it will be enough to reboot the system. It should be noted right away that this problem most often occurs on a laptop with Windows 10 and Lenovo and Pavilion models.

Monitor driver

Without straying too far from the topic, it is worth mentioning the problems with the monitor drivers. This question is most often faced by those who use specialized equipment that needs drivers.

If a professional or semi-professional screen is used, it will not be able to work in tandem with the standard software that is in Windows distribution... In this case, you will have to find suitable "firewood" that would fix the problem. They can be found on the disc that came with the monitor, or on the device manufacturer's website.

Video card drivers

If the brightness does not change by Windows laptop 10, you need to take a closer look at the performance of the graphics adapter drivers. it frequent problem and the graphics card is really prone to software issues and update errors.

This problem can be caused by:

  • the drivers have been removed by the system;
  • they were not installed at all;
  • the adapter has been disabled in Device Manager;
  • an incorrect update has occurred.

Solving problems with video card drivers

So, if the "firewood" has been removed or not installed at all in the system, then it is enough to independently load them onto a laptop with Windows 10. Often the system can independently install software from unverified sources, load them with special software or from a driver pack. In this case, you need to go to the official website of the video card manufacturer and find the necessary files there.

It is very important to download software from the official site so that no more problems like this happen. You can also use special programs to update.

For example, if the video card is from by Nvidia, it will be enough to download Nvidia Experience from the official resource. This is the official utility that offers to optimize the graphics component of the system, as well as install updates for the card.

If the video card is disabled, you need to activate it in the same way as it was done earlier with the monitor. Go to the "Device Manager" and find the line "Video adapters", select the desired model and "Enable" it.

Chipset drivers

Here is a similar story to the problem with the video card. If for some reason drivers were loaded from a third-party source or through automatic installation of system software, not all options may work. Some of them may not be displayed at all, which is why it will not even work to find where the brightness is on the laptop.

In this case, it is enough to install the necessary "firewood" from trusted sources or the official website.

Automatic update

Often this system option can play a cruel joke. And if in Windows 7 this function disconnected without problems, then with the "Ten" things are more complicated. Often, without the knowledge of the user, the system starts installing updates that can only harm it. Some may cause functions or tools to go missing.

To disable, you will need to go to the "System" menu. This can be done using the Win + X buttons or through the context menu. Next, we find the item "Change parameters". Find the "Hardware" menu and select "Device Installation Options".

In the new window, you must refuse automatic download programs: select "No" and click on "Save".

Combination problems

The brightness button on a laptop is the easiest way to adjust this parameter... It is on every keyboard and initially functions properly. Sometimes it is enough to press it to change the brightness, and sometimes it is necessary to use a combination of keys, among which there is the "Fn" button.

If for some reason these combinations do not work, the problem may be with the drivers or incorrect use of the buttons.

Included with any laptop is always a disk that contains all the necessary drivers for the correct operation of the device. Usually, after installing Windows, it is enough to put this disk and start loading all programs.

If for some reason you are not able to do this, then you need to go to the official website of the laptop manufacturer for the software. If you have a laptop from the company, then you need to download the HP Software Framework. Have Asus set the program is called ATK Hotkey.

Maybe you need to configure the buttons in the BIOS. In this menu, the options for using combinations can be disabled. You need to go to it and find the appropriate section. Depending on the model, it can be designated as System Configuration, Action Keys Mode, Function Key Behavior, etc.

Brightness adjustment

How to add brightness to a laptop monitor? To do this, you need to take a closer look at the laptop keyboard. The top row contains combined buttons, which, in addition to the F1-F12 designations, also have icons. If you don't know what they mean, read the instructions.

The button for increasing the brightness is indicated by the image of a large sun, but to decrease the brightness, you must press the button with a smaller sun. By the way, the two keys for volume control have the same logic.

But it won't be enough just to find these keys. They always work with a function button, which can be labeled "Fn" or "Fx". It is located in the lowest row. Using a combination of two buttons, you can enable or disable a particular function.

On a laptop, you can adjust the brightness or volume, enable or disable wireless network, touchpad, monitor and sound. You can put your laptop to sleep.

Besides buttons, you can also use software setting brightness. For example, you can sometimes find a corresponding icon in the tray. You can also go to the "Control Panel", select the "Power Options" setting, and in one of the power plans you can find an adjustable slider.

Brightness adjustment is carried out in the Intel Graphic utility, which is almost always set by default. Having opened it, you can go to monitor settings, where it is easy to change contrast, gamma, brightness and other parameters.

Hello.

On laptops, a fairly common problem is the problem of screen brightness: it sometimes does not adjust, then it changes on its own, then everything is too bright, then the colors are too weak. In general, it is a "sore subject".

In this article I will focus on one problem: the inability to adjust the brightness. Yes, it happens, I myself periodically come across similar questions in my work. By the way, some neglect the monitor settings, but in vain: if the brightness is too low (or strong), the eyes begin to strain and get tired quickly (I already gave advice about this in this article :).

So where do you start solving the problem?

1. Brightness control: several ways.

Many users, having tried one way of adjusting the brightness, make an unambiguous conclusion - it cannot be adjusted, something "flew", needs to be repaired. Meanwhile, there are several ways to do this, besides, once you set up the monitor, you can not touch it for a long time, and you will not even remember that one of the methods does not work for you ...

I propose to try several options, I will consider them below.

1) Function keys

Almost every modern laptop has a keyboard. They are usually located on the F1, F2, etc. To activate them, just press the button. FN + F3 for example (depending on which button you have the brightness icon drawn on. DELL laptops- these are usually buttons F11, F12) .

function buttons: brightness adjustment.

If the brightness of the screen has not changed and nothing appears on the screen (no regulator) - let's move on ...

2) Taskbar (for Windows 8, 10)

In Windows 10, you can very quickly adjust the brightness if you click on the power icon in the taskbar, and then left-click on the rectangle with brightness: adjust its optimal value (see the screenshot below).

3) Through the control panel

First you need to open the control panel at: Control Panel \ All Control Panel Items \ Power Supply

4) Through the video card driver

The easiest way to open the video card driver settings is to right-click on the desktop and select graphical characteristics (in general, it all depends on the specific driver, sometimes you can go to its settings only through control Panel Windows) .

In the chromaticity settings, there are usually always items of parameters for setting: saturation, contrast, gamma, brightness, etc. Actually, we find the desired parameter and change it to suit our requirements.

2. Are the function buttons enabled?

A very common reason why the laptop does not work function buttons (Fn + F3, Fn + F11, etc.)- are BIOS settings... It is possible that they are simply disabled in the BIOS.

The choice of the section where to enter the BIOS depends on your manufacturer. Here (within the framework of this article) it is unrealistic to give a universal recipe. For example, in HP laptops - check the System Configuration section: see if the Action Keys Mode item is enabled there (if not, put it in Enabled mode).

Action keys mode. Laptop BIOS HP.

In DELL laptops, the function buttons are configured in the section Advanced: the item is called Function Key Behavior (two modes of operation can be set: Function Key and Multimedia Key).

3. Lack of key drivers

It is possible that the function buttons (including those responsible for the screen brightness) do not work due to the lack of drivers.

Give a generic name for the driver in this question (which can be downloaded and everything will work) - it is forbidden (by the way, there are such on the network, I highly do not recommend using it) ! Depending on the brand (manufacturer) of your laptop, the driver will be called differently, for example: in Samsung it is "Control Center", in HP - "HP Quick launch Buttons ", in Toshiba - Hotkey utility, in ASUS -" ATK Hotkey ".

If you cannot find the driver on the official website (or it is not available for your Windows OS), you can use special utilities to find drivers:

4. Incorrect drivers for the video card. Installing "old" working drivers

If everything worked as needed for you before, and after Windows updates (by the way, when updating, usually, a different video driver is always installed) - everything began to work differently (for example, the brightness adjustment slider runs across the screen, but the brightness does not change) - it makes sense to try to roll back the driver.

By the way, important point: you should have old drivers that worked well for you.

How to do it?

1) Go to control Panel Windows and find there device Manager... You open it.

Next, find the "Video adapters" tab in the list of devices and open it. Then right click on your graphics card and in context menu select " Update drivers ...«.

Updating the driver in device manager

Then select " Search for drivers on this computer«.

By the way, it is possible that the old driver (especially if you just updated old version Windows rather than reinstalling it) is already on your PC. To find out - click the button at the bottom of the page: " Select a driver from the list of already installed drivers"(See screenshot below).

Where to look for drivers. Directory selection

Then just point to the old (different) driver and try using it. Very often this solution helped me, because old drivers sometimes turn out to be better than new ones!

Driver List

5. Windows update: 7 -> 10.

Installing instead of Windows 7, say, Windwows 10 - you can get rid of problems with drivers for function buttons (especially if you can't find them) ... The fact is that the new Windows OS has built-in standard drivers for the function keys.

For example, the screenshot below shows how you can adjust the brightness.

However, I should note that these "built-in" drivers may be less functional than your "native" ( for example, some unique functions may not be available, for example, auto-adjusting contrast depending on ambient lighting).

By the way, you can read in more detail about the choice of Windows OS in this note: (despite the fact that the article is already a bit old, it contains good thoughts :)).

If you have something to add on the topic of the article, thank you in advance for your comment on the article. Good luck!
