Push-button protected phones will be relevant for a long time, even despite the emergence of smartphones with touch screen and a protected case. There are several reasons for this: this is the cost, which significantly raises the cost of the device along with the complication of the case, this is the ability to dial a number in any conditions using mechanical buttons, this is also a noticeable time difference autonomous work... We have already reviewed several new products in this segment and today we want to study in detail teXet TM-501R, which has become a continuation of the previously tested teXet TM-500R model. It also implements several interesting solutions that are not so often found in phones, for example, the ability to switch to PowerBank mode to charge accessories or a smartphone.

With the launch of the first rugged smartphone TM-3200R teXet ushered in a new era of reliable devices that are not inferior in capabilities to the technical innovations of their generation. X-driver - the third smartphone in the line of rugged devices - continues this trend, but unlike its predecessors TM-3200R and TM-3204R has highest class protection against water and dust IP68. X-driver is based on a Qualcomm MSM8225 dual-core processor with a clock speed of 1 GHz and Android 4.0.4 OS. Reserve random access memory 768 MB is enough for fast and correct work with applications and games.

The safety of the functional components of the smartphone is guaranteed by high-strength plastic. The 8.0 megapixel main camera guarantees excellent image quality, while the 0.3 megapixel front camera is useful for video calls. The protective characteristics of the device allow you to shoot even underwater; a flash is provided for night shots.

Users can download navigation software and an interface for the built-in electronic compass from the “teXet Recommends” catalog on each device.

The smartphone supports the operation of two SIM cards, which makes it possible to optimize costs for mobile communication and GPRS Internet and at the same time use different tariff plans... For data exchange between devices, bluetooth module.

To always stand out from other objects, the X-driver received a striking body design with a combination of bright yellow and black. Complementing the aggressive aesthetics of the smartphone is the grooved surface of the back cover, the pattern of which mimics the wheel tread of an SUV.

The battery with a capacity of 2500 mAh is responsible for the long operating time of the novelty. The battery will be sufficient for six hours of talk time, eight hours of data transfer and 450 hours of standby time.

teXet X-driver is the only smartphone on the Russian market with an international IP68 protection class, capable of solving diverse tasks in circumstances in which conventional technology is absolutely powerless: the device guarantees stable work in frost, in water, during a dusty storm and will withstand a fall from a height. The protected novelty is primarily aimed at active people, representatives of extreme professions, athletes, and will also be interesting ordinary users looking for a functional smartphone.

teXet TM-3200R is the most technologically advanced model of all rugged telephones offered by teXet. After a heated discussion of the news about the appearance of the teXet TM-3200R model, we decided not to deprive our attention of this model either, before that we had models TM-503RS and TM-510R on our test. TeXet TM-3200R is an IP67 shockproof smartphone enclosed in a shockproof housing. Smartphone runs on operating system Android 2.3, during testing, no updates were found, supports work with two active SIM cards and has enough capacious battery 2000 mAh.

In terms of its dimensions, the smartphone is not at all small, the dimensions of the teXet TM-3200R are 124 × 68x20 mm. It looks cumbersome, but when you take it in your hand, it immediately becomes clear that the device is serious. Dimensions and appearance are due to the degree of protection against external damage, and teXet TM-3200R has good protection. Compared to competing models from SONY and SAMSUNG, they are inferior to teXet TM-3200R in crush test protection. But more about that later, now oh appearance smartphone.

The case of teXet TM-3200R is made of durable plastic with rubber inserts, both connectors of the device - jack 3.5 mm and microUSB, are tightly closed with caps. The plugs have one feature - they are attached to the body with small bolts, apparently for reliability. I have already encountered such a fastening system, in my opinion, it is not very reliable: over time, the plug bursts at the attachment point (different density of materials affects).

Almost the entire front side of teXet TM-3200R is occupied by an IPS display with a diagonal of 3.2 inches, covered with durable, 1.2 mm thick ASAHI glass. The aspect ratio of the display is 16: 9, the resolution is 480 × 320 pixels. All displayed information looks nice on it, it doesn't fade in the sun, the colors are bright, the contrast is good. Above the display there is a speaker slot covered with a metal mesh, light and distance sensors, a peephole front camera... At the bottom of the display there is a slot for a microphone and three function keys, two of which are responsible for calling and canceling, and the third for exiting the menu. The answer key is convenient when your hands are wet or you are wearing gloves, the keys are large and embossed, it will be difficult to miss them.

On the back of the teXet TM-3200R there is a strap mount, a strap with a carabiner, a compass and a small screwdriver included. Below is the window of the main camera, next to which the flash is located. The camera has a resolution of 5.0 megapixels, photos and videos are of average quality, the camera is slow. Next is the battery cover, which is securely attached to the body with two bolts. A screwdriver for easy opening of the lid is located on the strap. In the lower part there are two slots for the call speaker, also covered with a mesh. The sound from the speaker is loud, it will be difficult to miss a call.

On the right side of the device is the camera button and volume rocker. On the top there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a power / lock button for the device. The bottom part has no connectors. On the left side of the device there is a microUSB connector and a button for turning on the flashlight.

The role of a flashlight, as always, is performed by a flash, and to illuminate something, we constantly need to keep the button pressed. This has its pros and cons, but at least the flashlight won't turn on in your pocket like the TM-510R did. The flashlight has one feature: when the phone is completely turned off, when it has time to write to you that the battery charge is used up, the flashlight power button still works, and it is very convenient. The charge left in the battery is enough to shine on you for some more time. The flash light is average, but highlighting the road, dark entrance or keyhole will be enough.

While using the smartphone, another small disadvantage surfaced, associated with the microUSB connector. It is very deeply recessed into the case, and it is practically impossible to use a different cable, except for the one that comes with the kit. For example, the cable that I had in my car to charge my phones didn't fit, and a couple of times I had to live the rest of the day without a connection.

Inside the teXet TM-3200R is a powerful 2000 mAh battery by today's standards. The manufacturer promises us up to 5 hours of talk time, 360 hours of standby time (2G), up to 6 hours of Internet use (WiFi / 3G). With an average load of the smartphone, after installing a couple of programs that optimize the operation of the system, I managed to pull out almost three days of work from it. The result is really good, considering how much the charge is "holding" at the moment modern devices, but, in truth, I wanted such a smartphone to work for at least five days without recharging.

The assembly of teXet TM-3200R is good, there are no gaps, backlashes, squeaks. The only thing that can be done wrong is to loosely close back cover, and so everything is done perfectly.

The smartphone runs on the Android 2.3 operating system, the operating system is far from new and a lot has already been written about it, so we will not focus on it. I can only say that teXet TM-3200R works fast enough, but there is always not enough RAM. There were no special glitches during testing, a couple of times the smartphone rebooted on its own, hung a couple of times, but everything was tolerable. Work with two SIM cards flawlessly, the signal is stable. The only thing is, if you talk on one card, incoming call on the other hand, it is impossible.

The protective functions of the smartphone are implemented perfectly: teXet TM-3200R has successfully survived all falls, of which, by the way, there were as usual a lot and from different heights, in a normal everyday situation such falls do not occur, unless, of course, you are a high-altitude climber. The smartphone has a good margin of safety, there are few traces of tests left on the case, rubber inserts softened the impact well. The glass is absolutely intact, without a hint of cracks, although it was scratched a little when falling on stones, but we must pay tribute to it good quality, since, I repeat, there were a lot of falls, but practically no scratches. I am sure that if you throw a smartphone at an enemy, then he will receive serious injuries, and the device will continue to work.

Further - the smartphone passed the test "felting in the mud", after which it was successfully washed and dried. I pay special attention to washing the device after falling into the mud, do not forget to clean the holes of the microphone and all the speakers well, otherwise the dirt clogged there will greatly interfere with the audibility during the conversation. The smartphone passed the test for immersion in water perfectly, it swam in the river, sank to the depth specified in the instructions of half a meter and even more and continued to work with success. After two weeks of using the TM-3200R, I decided to conduct an unusual test for myself, taking my smartphone with me to the bath and watching a couple of episodes of my favorite series online. It is quite convenient, while lying in the bath, to entertain yourself by watching a video or reading the news, without fear of ruining the device.

The teXet TM-3200R passed all tests well, there are no complaints about the degree of protection, the safety margin is large enough, it will come out workable from any life situation. If you do not go too far and do not put cruel experiments on the device, then it will be able to serve for a very long time.

The impressions of using the smartphone were positive, yes, for a city dweller, the device is bulky and half the degrees of protection may never come in handy. Yes, I want more battery life, new firmware, but in the segment of protected smartphones in terms of price-quality ratio, teXet TM-3200R has no competitors. The nearest rivals are more expensive and cannot provide such protection.

The teXet TM-3200R smartphone is perfect for those who are fond of fishing, hunting, hiking, outdoor activities, extreme sports or working in adverse conditions, for whom advanced multimedia functions are important, the ability using GPS and maps. All these people teXet TM-3200R will be a good, and most importantly, reliable company.

Perhaps the most vulnerable point of modern rugged smartphones is touch screens. Such devices can be drowned and rolled in the sand without any special fears, but it is worth dropping them carefully - what if they fall screen down, and even on a pebble? It is clear that it is almost impossible to drop something neatly and at the same time accidentally, such situations happen suddenly. You can't add straws in advance, but a sandwich (in this case its equivalent is a smartphone) most often falls with oil (touch screen) down.

I remember that six months ago, my friend and I staged a very serious test of the teXet X-Driver smartphone, and he managed to preserve his honor and dignity. But everything could have turned out differently: after each throw, we looked at the screen with apprehension - what if it cracked? So, if you still need a protected device, but you don’t want to mess with “sensors”, you should look towards off-road push-button telephones... Today we are talking about just one of them - teXet TM-511R.

About autonomous work

Today there are quite a few similar models on the market, and from different brands. What is special about teXet TM-511R? You may have already paid attention to it in the list of performance characteristics, but I will emphasize again: this phone has a 2,700 mAh battery.

That is, just a little less than Samsung Galaxy S5 (2,800 mAh) and slightly larger than the Samsung Galaxy S4 (2,600 mAh). As a person with a vacation, usually divided into three or four weeks off at different times of the year, it is difficult for me to understand why anyone might need to sit somewhere for a month away from the outlets. But the fact is that teXet TM-511R is quite ready for this. After receiving the device, I charged it, and now the third week of work without recharging ends, and the indicator still has a quarter of the charge. I'm sure the phone will last until the cherished month. For comparison: the majority of such phones have batteries for 1,400-1,600 mAh.

About functionality

However, it should be understood that such autonomy was achieved largely due to the not wide functionality of the phone. Roughly speaking, he knows how to make calls, provide messaging, play music / videos and take pictures, plus it offers a voice recorder, alarm clock, calendar, organizer, currency converter, a couple of games and a very simple browser. In a word, all the possibilities of the simplest, "telephone" MediaTek platform are available. In fact, you can't really watch a movie on a 2-inch display, the browser allows you to open only the simplest sites (and you often can't open them via GPRS - EDGE is not supported), and the quality of music playback will suit only the most picky user. However, teXet TM-511R is quite suitable for audiobooks. Moreover, it has a 3.5 mm jack for headphones, and you can experiment by changing the bundled headset for something more interesting. This is important, because in the case of many push-button "SUVs" their terrible complete headsets are connected to the miniUSB / microUSB ports and cannot be replaced.

The phone interface looks like this. The screen fades a lot in the sun, so I had to take one photo at home

It's nice that under teXet's control the device was well localized. That is, there are no strange abbreviations, errors in Russian and other translation jambs in the interface. I will never forget Caterpillar CAT B25: it incorrectly indicates the screen unlocking scheme in the pop-up hint plate when switching to Ukrainian. Why, why, who is to blame for this are open questions. So teXet TM-511R has nothing of the kind, the device is localized to the top five.

A separate mention, oddly enough, is the camera. Yes, you cannot create a photo masterpiece with its help. But she takes off better cameras that were installed in similar devices last year. Moreover, teXet TM-511R is more or less suitable for capturing text. This picture was taken in a dimly lit room - everything is much better in good light.

The model has two slots for SIM-cards, their work is organized in a standard way: in standby mode, both SIM cards are available, and when talking one by one, the second is disabled. With communication, everything is a beam - it is well audible in both directions. There is a very important point: teXet TM-511R can speak normally immediately after being taken out of the water. Yes, it will be a little worse to hear than in a completely dry state, and yet it is normal. Often, the conversational speakers of protected devices, after immersion in water, fail for an hour or two - until they dry out.

About the delivery set

Highly simple headset, USB-microUSB cable, charging unit, warranty and quick start guide - this is a basic set of almost any modern phone.

Meanwhile, the teXet TM-511R comes with a couple of non-standard accessories. The first is a carabiner with an analog compass and a screwdriver blade needed to unscrew the back cover.

The second one is spare plugs for microUSB and 3.5 mm ports, and they come with small bolts. What is all this for? Well, over time, the covers that are attached to the phone at the factory can get frayed. For example, if it is often dropped on the asphalt. In this case, the "spare wheel" will come in handy: you don't have to buy new phone... Again, back to my personal Caterpillar CAT B25: if you damage the plug tightly screwed to its body, then it will lose one of its main qualities - water resistance. With teXet TM-511R, such a number will not work, you can simply change the caps and operate it further.

About the body

Perhaps the main "near-body" feature of teXet TM-511R is matte metal plates screwed to the side faces. They look good and, importantly, they make the device ... more civilian, or something. Well, that is, I would not go with most of these off-road phones in the city, but teXet TM-511R is quite suitable for this. It does not seem like a "tractor" or, let's say, a kind of military weapon. Although, of course, the device is by no means small and not light - you cannot give such a graceful lady.

At the same time, not metal after our tests there were a few more scratches and dents than on rubber and plastic - these are the other two materials used in the teXet TM-511R case. So application metal plates can be called both justified and not very much. They have a positive effect on design, and negatively on scratch resistance. However, scars - after all, they adorn real men, and teXet TM-511R is just a kind of man's telephone.

The build quality is very high, no cracks or extra holes, which in theory could let sand and water inside, were not found. But, of course, before diving, it will be useful to press down the port plugs with your finger once more and check if you have screwed on the back cover tightly. Let me remind you that it is fastened with two steel bolts.

I would like to emphasize the convenience of the keyboard and joystick. They differ little from the keyboards of some Nokia Asha push-button phones in terms of their motion accuracy. For a protected device, this is a real plus, because the developers of such models usually spit on ergonomics from a high mountain.

About security

The teXet TM-511R case complies with the IP67 standard, that is, the phone can be submerged for half an hour under water to a depth of up to a meter without consequences. Plus he's not afraid of dust. It is more difficult with shocks: teXet does not declare compliance with one of the standards of the MIL-STD-810 family, which, unlike IP, also imply shock resistance. Nevertheless, the body of the device made of metal, rubber and durable plastic hints that it can also be dropped.

To begin with, we lowered the device into the river. For 40 minutes he lay there in different positions.

Kicked him on the beach. A couple of scratches appeared, yet the shells are relatively sharp, and that's to be expected. But "football" did not affect the performance in any way.

We also tied the phone to a Parrot Ar.Drone 2.0 quadcopter and threw it from a height of 10 meters on the ground with gravel, drowned it in the bathroom and threw it on the asphalt. Here is a video of such a fall:

TeXet TM-511R withstood all these bullying, no problems were recorded. Well, except that the SIM card moved in the slot, which led to the loss of connection with cellular network, - and then only because the slot has a miniSIM format, and I inserted my "microsim" there.

Total

TeXet TM-511R, I'm not afraid of this word, is head and shoulders above its counterparts - at least those 5-6 push-button "off-road" devices that I came across. In terms of security, they are all about the same, but in this case, some attention is paid to "little things": the camera (those who disagree can look here and admire the pictures taken by the phone under the CAT brand), plugs in the kit, localization and, most importantly, battery capacity. The same Caterpillar CAT B25 is about the same in size, it is no less, and the battery there is almost two times weaker. And what is most ridiculous, it costs more: about 5,000 rubles against 2,900 in the case of "Texet".

In general, teXet TM-511R can be recommended for lovers of long mountain or sea adventures. Especially if you are taking on vacation something more "Internet" (smartphone or tablet there) - with the World Wide Web for devices like teXet TM-511R everything is very difficult. However, taking a break from this very Web is also useful.
