There is no separate multimedia speaker, which is good and bad at the same time. During a conversation, the voice is transmitted perfectly and without distortion (for a voice, the power reserve is solid), but for a call it is not enough, it is clearly quiet. When playing a video, this is not so critical (the speaker "looks" directly at you), but calls in noisy places may not be heard.

Noise cancellation during conversation works (two microphones). The headset is included. 3.5mm jack is standard. A removable 2,000 mAh battery lasts a full day of average load, but nothing more.

For its 5-inch screen, the smartphone doesn't look thick. The designers obviously did not gain in weight, and the device feels massive in the hand (169 grams). It was assembled with high quality, but the back was upset without coating and even without a notch on the surface. There are several color options, otherwise the design is “none”.

Everything is simple with him: the device is for those who want a large screen and support for the modern 4G standard. And all this for the lowest possible fee. There are no questions about the assembly. Everything is tight, without cracks, does not move. In one review I read about a slight crunching in my hands when squeezed, so I squeezed the device heartily, everything is in order. Perhaps the author of the review did not fully seat one of the latches during assembly, this happens. The back cover is not pushed through. There is no backlash of buttons.

The layout is standard - "tray". The battery is removable, the camera's peephole almost does not protrude beyond the dimensions. Only a fraction of a millimeter of a metal edging that protects the glass of the camera eye from scratches. There is no separate multimedia speaker, therefore, there are no additional holes in the back cover. Thanks to the use of the voice loudspeaker as a universal one, the sound is not muffled even on the soft surface of the phone.

I am missing something with the speaker design. If we decided to abandon the special multimedia speaker and make the voice speaker one universal, then how could you hide this speaker under a slot less than 1 mm wide, and then cover this slot with a metal plate with tiny holes? How does the sound break free through all these obstacles? We would have made the gap three times wider and closed it with a thin mesh, there would not have been hundreds of complaints about a too quiet call.

The second microphone (for noise cancellation during a call) is in the upper left corner next to the standard 3.55 headphone or headset jack. As I already wrote, there are no complaints about the sound during a call, but the ringtone volume is insufficient.

Silver buttons "like metal" are just right. The power button and the volume rocker are both on the right side, but the key travel is short and clear, their "joint" placement does not interfere with taking screenshots. I remember that with some smartphone I swore all over, it was only possible to take a screenshot with the buttons standing next to it from the third or fifth attempt.

All three control buttons are soft, they saved on the backlight, it is not. In the twilight they are poorly visible, in the dark at first it is quite a disaster. Then you get used to it, not fatal. But there is an LED event indicator that helps to conserve battery power. Think about how many times a day you turn on the screen just to check if you missed something important. It is a pity that the indicator is one-color (light blue) and you can only be guided by the presence / absence of its blinking. By the way, many programs allow you to set the blinking frequency of the indicator, this is a "note to the hostess".

Display

The screen, unfortunately, is not IPS. 5 inches, TFT-TN, 16.78 million colors, 854 x 480, pixel density 196 ppi. In the image above, you can see the graininess level. The resolution of 854 x 480 with a pixel density of 196 ppi does not cause delight, I would like more. The matrix itself is not bad in its class and the colors are saturated. White balance is more or less normal, although a slightly bluish tint is present. It's a shame that the smartphone does not use the MiraVision technology, which allows you to perfectly adjust the color temperature, on this matrix MiraVision would be very useful.

The screen is responsive, but only responds to 2 simultaneous touches. The display gets dirty in moderation, but I strongly doubt the presence of an oleophobic coating, because the usual procedure of wiping the screen on a T-shirt on one's own abdomen was not enough to remove dirt.

When the display is rotated vertically, the colors are distorted, when rotated horizontally, the effect is almost imperceptible. Moreover, in the vertical plane, the inclination of the upper part of the device towards itself is critical. Simply put, if you are going to watch a video together, then it is better for the first viewer to sit directly in front of the screen, and the second on the right of the first, and not on the left.

Cameras

There are two cameras: the main 8 MP without autofocus and the front 5 MP, also without it. The description on the Beeline website indicates the presence of autofocus, but this is either an error, or this "autofocus" does not work. The third version - we adjusted the technical conditions for financial reasons and set the cheapest that we could find. There is no point in guessing, the final result is important. And the result is not fun for you and me.

There is a flash in one LED on both cameras (on the front one too), this is advertised on the box and the factory sticker, they say competitive advantage... The flashes are weak, and there is almost no sense from the flash of the main camera. The frontal flash will somehow illuminate the face, but it is still better not to show the result to anyone.

A traditional "advertising" photo of a playground, taken in excellent lighting conditions. White balance is more or less fine, but sharpness is not important even in ideal shooting conditions. And that's 8 MP! I had a mid-budget Samsung shooting better with my 2 MP camera about six years ago (also without autofocus).

Even in a well-lit hall of a shopping center, the white balance “leaves”, and unpredictably, more often in the direction of greenery. The sharpness is also sad, the higher is one of the relatively successful samples, the others were worse.

Another example of shooting indoors. Do not think that it was I who managed to consume one of these advertised "tasty and inexpensive" products. I didn’t use it, and my hands didn’t tremble.

Trying to photograph documents is almost useless. Anything in a fairly large print on A4 paper can still be difficult to read, choosing the best result from several attempts. Small text (see on the right, brochure measuring 10 x 12 cm) makes no sense even to try to shoot.

You know, I like to tinker with the camera of an inexpensive smartphone and look for the right approach to it, it's interesting. Usually it is possible to find explicitly weak sides, learn to “go around” these problems and get an acceptable result. But here even to mess around is reluctant and, most likely, useless.

Of course, something can be photographed with such a main camera at as much as 8 megapixels. For example, close-ups from a distance of one and a half to two meters in good lighting conditions can look good.

Large (20 x 20 cm) and bright car stickers are also quite readable. By the way, they are now traded with a big discount. Is it possible for a penny to save a pack or two or three by 2018, suddenly a small business will burn out?

The front camera is even worse. Not surprisingly, it is "only" 5 megapixels! More and more often I am thinking that this is some kind of planned sabotage of manufacturers. The numbers in the descriptions are beautiful, but a person will suffer for a couple of months with these pseudo-megapixels, then he will go to the salon for a device of a higher class and will be happy without any super-flagships. This concludes the conversation about cameras. Yes, I almost forgot to write: the device shoots videos with a resolution of 1280 x 720.

Benchmarking and gauges

Serious gamers are of little interest in the numbers of benchmarks of inexpensive smartphones. It is clear that the heaviest and most resource-intensive games are written for top models. But it is still useful to navigate and understand what we have the right to count on when buying.

But personally, I did not like the fact that the Beeline Fast smartphone, which was on sale three months ago, showed much better performance in the form of 23275 parrots. Despite the fact that this "Beeline Fast" was the twin brother of the current Alcatel PIXI 4 (5) in terms of display size and resolution, and the other stuffing they have is almost the same. In fact, and taking into account the diagonal of the screen of 5 inches, this is 196 ppi. Otherwise, everything corresponds to the stated data. It should also be remembered that the indicated amount of internal memory of 8 GB does not take into account the space occupied by the operating system and other add-ons. In ideal cases ( pure android without add-ons), a little more than 4 GB will remain free for us, in the case of Alcatel PIXI 4 this is 3.6 GB of space. Additional microSD card 32 GB is a required accessory.

About software update

I read a lot of complaints about the software from those who bought a smartphone at the beginning of sales. Most of the complaints were "on trifles", but there were serious complaints. For example, to one-way hearing in communication programs. At the end of June, an update was released for the smartphone software, and, as far as I understood, most of the problems were eliminated. The update "arrives" within 1-3 days after activating the smartphone, and I would advise you not to make hasty conclusions until it arrives at the purchased device.

Impressions from work

Let's start with the little thing that almost half of those who bought this device complain about: the painfully long time of fully charging the battery. They write that up to 5 o'clock. No wonder, the complete adapter only delivers a maximum current of 0.55 A. Very strange. It seemed to me that the last time I saw the complete adapter in the box with a smartphone for a current of less than 1.0 A was several years ago. From the 2.0 A adapter, our Alcatel PIXI 4 charges, as it should, in two and a half hours. The charging current is controlled by the smartphone itself, which will not take too much anyway, and it is not clear why it was "put on a diet" with a maximum current of 0.55 A.

As for the battery capacity, 2000 mAh is not enough for a device for two SIM cards with 4G support and a 5-inch screen. Despite the fact that the manufacturer is unlikely to greatly limit itself in size and weight, this can be seen from the size and weight of the device. The difference between 2000 and 2500 mAh seems to be small, but it often turns out to be decisive in the question of whether the smartphone will survive on a full charge until the evening.

Another strange feature is the non-linearity of the display. The last 25% of the charge my smartphone ate in 20 minutes of not very active use, then grunted and after another minute it turned off. Apparently, it will take two or three full charge / discharge cycles to calibrate the meter. If it doesn't help, then this phenomenon will turn out to be another source of complaints from irritated users.

Now about data transfer. I (and not only me) have always liked Alcatel radio units for their good sensitivity and overall behavior. Our Alcatel PIXI 4 did not disappoint in this sense either. Switches between 4G / 3G quickly, holds on to 4G well. Sensitivity also pleased.

It is clear that the speed depends primarily on the network, but the smartphone given back by the network is not shy about taking. Once I was simply surprised: in the Moscow Beeline 3G network at a distance of half a kilometer from base station, with obstacles in the form of houses and a triple-glazed unit, the smartphone produced 25 Mbit / s. That would be so always and everywhere, "but this is fantastic, son."

With speeds in the Beeline 4G (LTE) network, it is also very good, 40-45 Mbit / s. But here the signal was also better (the BS is closer), plus a day off. In fact, almost no one needs all these "Olympic records" of speeds. More important stable work free of fading and fast response time. In this sense, LTE is much more pleasant than 3G, and buying a smartphone without 4G support is irrational. Unless you are sure that you will change the device for another new one before the 4G network appears in your region.

The screenshot above is a smartphone access via Wi-Fi from a home Internet router. A symmetric 20 Mbit / s channel (we no longer need it at home), it is good to use it to test different devices. In this scenario, there are no complaints about Alcatel PIXI 4, I see exactly the same numbers on other devices connected to home internet via Wi-Fi.

The example below restores the "ripped" Pixi 3 and installs the official version of the system. Download the firmware package from the link below. The archive also contains a version of SP FlashTool suitable for manipulating the device in question.

1. We unpack the archive obtained from the link above into a separate folder.



2. Launch the flasher by opening the file flash_tool.exe located in the program directory.



3. Add a scatter file to the flasher MT6572_Android_scatter_emmc.txt, which is located in the folder with the system software images.



4. Choosing an operating mode "Fortmat All + Download" from the dropdown list,

   

   then click "Download".



5. We remove the battery from the smartphone and connect the phone with a USB cable to the PC.
6. After the device has been identified in the system, files will be transferred to its memory and the corresponding progress bar will be filled in the SP FlashTool window.



7. Upon completion of the restoration, a confirmation appears - a window "Download OK".



8. Disconnect the Alcatel 4027D from the PC, install the battery and start the device by long pressing the key "Turning on".

Method 3: Modified recovery

The above-described methods for flashing Pixi 3 (4.5) assume the installation of the official version of the 01001 system. Updates for the OS from the manufacturer are not expected, but it is really possible to transform the model in question in software only using custom firmware.

Despite the presence of many different solutions modified Android for Alcatel 4027D, it is not recommended to use firmware based on system version higher than 5.1. Firstly, the small amount of RAM of the device does not allow you to comfortably use Android 6.0, and secondly, in such solutions, various components often do not work, in particular, the camera, audio playback, etc.

As an example, we will install a custom CyanogenMod 12.1 into Alcatel Pixi3. This is a firmware based on Android 5.1, practically devoid of flaws and specially prepared for work on the device in question.

1. An archive containing everything you need to Android installations 5.1 can be downloaded from the link below. Download and unpack the package into a separate directory on the PC disk.
2. Place the resulting folder on the MicroSD card installed in the smartphone.

Obtaining Superuser rights

Installing TWRP

Installation of custom firmware into the smartphone in question is carried out using a functional tool - a modified TeamWin Recovery (TWRP) recovery environment.

But before this becomes possible, the recovery must appear in the device. To equip Alcatel 4027D with the required component, do the following.

Memory re-allocation

Almost all custom firmwares for this model are installed on re-allocated memory.

The touchscreen itself is generally very rough, reacts poorly to touch, very often, instead of the necessary button, neighboring ones are pressed. Because of this, you try to use more voice input but it works more or less decently only with 3G connection. And sometimes you have to repeat it 5 times. With memory, in general, some kind of trouble is not clear why a memory card is needed if the installed applications are not transferred there. I have a situation when, in order to install a new application, I have to erase the old one. In general, the phone is only suitable as a simple dialer.
