Top TVs with 3d support. Smart TV functionality

Not sure how to choose a 3D TV? There is nothing particularly difficult in this choice. You just need to find answers to a few questions:

  • What 3D TVs are there, and how are they different from each other?
  • What technologies for obtaining a volumetric image are used in them, their strengths and weaknesses?
  • Which 3Are D glasses more comfortable?
  • What are the subtleties to consider when buying 3D TVs?

Screen matrices and 3D systems: is there a rigid connection between them?

It should be understood that all existing technologies for creating a three-dimensional image can be used both in plasma panels and in LCD and OLED TVs. Although many are racking their brains over the problem of which types of matrices are most preferable for demonstrating 3D, there is little point in building your choice on this basis.

Plasma models are gradually leaving the market, and promising OLED TVs are still too expensive to be considered by the average user. There remains a logical choice from a huge mass of LCD-models with LED-backlighting, which provide a decent quality of a three-dimensional picture both in terms of brightness and frame rate, as well as in response time of matrix elements.

What is the difference between an asset and a liability?

Today, in 3D-TVs, 2 systems of forming a volumetric image are used: active and passive. Both of them require the use of special glasses that provide different frames for each eye, and the brain combines them into a single volumetric image.

Active systems are based on the alternate demonstration on the TV screen of frames intended for each eye, and at such a speed that the human visual system perceives them as one. During the display of the frame intended for the left eye, the right eyepiece of the glasses is darkened, while the left remains transparent, and vice versa. For timely darkening and lightening of different eyepieces of active 3D glasses, they are synchronized with the TV via infrared channel.

Passive systems are distinguished by the simultaneous filing of two frames on the TV screen, each of which is polarized in a certain way, due to which only the right or left eyepiece of the glasses is passed through.

Both systems provide decent 3D quality, but have a number of strengths and weaknesses. The choice between them is to assess how critical these advantages and disadvantages are for you.

The agony of choosing a system and a passion for optics

Active systems provide full Full HD resolution of each frame, but are more complex and expensive to produce, which inevitably affects the cost of TVs. In addition, shutter systems significantly reduce the brightness of the image, there is a high probability of crosstalk (ghosting), and many people experience discomfort from constant flickering in the eyepieces of glasses. Also, glasses for active 3D are more bulky, since they require power supplies, control and synchronization units to be placed in the frame.

Passive 3D technology more accessible, easy to manufacture and little fatigue for the human visual apparatus. However, the demonstration of double frames on the TV screen inevitably reduces the resolution of the overall image by 2 times. Glasses with polarizing filters transmit almost the entire luminous flux, they are several times cheaper than active ones, they are light in weight and small in size.

Today, active 3D-systems are being implemented in their TVs by Sony, Samsung and Sharp. The Korean brand LG prefers to produce TV-receivers with only passive technology for forming three-dimensional images. Panasonic and Philips, on the other hand, are developing both technologies, allowing customers to decide which system suits them best.

Secrets of choosing the right 3D TV

Whatever marketers and store managers tell us, they are interested people, whose arguments are not always credible. If you do not know how to choose a 3D TV, try the following "folk" selection methods that have already proven their effectiveness:

  • Trust your own feelings ... Don't dive deep into specs or be seduced by high-profile numbers and technology names. When choosing between active and passive 3D technology, take the time to watch a dynamic 3D video with active glasses. If you feel rapid eye fatigue and general discomfort, then your clear choice in favor of polarization systems.
  • Attention to size ... To obtain the most tangible effect of volume, it is important to take into account three interrelated parameters: the diagonal of the screen, its resolution and the distance to the viewer. For each size of the TV screen (taking into account its resolution), specialists have determined the most optimal distance to the viewer's eyes, from where he is guaranteed not to distinguish the pixels of the image. These values are summarized in tables that can be easily found on the Internet.

Before you go to the store, clearly understand for yourself how far from you the TV will be, and then choose the appropriate diagonal and screen resolution (HD Ready or Full HD). Just remember that the passive method of creating a volumetric image leads to a 2-fold reduction in the image resolution. Therefore, if you plan to watch 3D TV from a distance closer than the specified optimal distance, you should pay attention to models that support active technology or have a higher resolution.

  • Consider the class of the TV ... It is noticed that the quality of the passive system for forming a three-dimensional image practically does not depend on the cost of the TV. At the same time, active 3D-systems, due to their high cost, in budget TVs may not be quite perfect. If you are seriously limited in funds and do not know which 3D TV to choose, you should give preference to models with a polarization system.
  • Decide on maximum number spectators ... It's no secret that active glasses are about 5 times more expensive than passive glasses. In view of this, the complete set of passive 3D-TVs usually includes 3-4 pairs of glasses, and active ones - no more than two, and even then only in premium-class models. Therefore, if you want to arrange at home group viewing of 3D sports programs or films, you should pay attention to budget polarization technology.

When choosing a new TV, buyers are often interested in models with extensive functionality. These include HDR, curved screen and, of course, 3D technology. Moreover, these functions can be found on TV at the same time, thanks to which the user can enjoy a simply amazing picture. Our list of the best 3D TVs for 2017 will help you find the perfect device for your home. We have included both relatively inexpensive solutions and premium TV in the list. This will make it easy for you to decide on the one for your needs.

Samsung UE55JS9000T

7th place

The TOP 7 is opened by the Samsung UE55JS900T, which again follows the LG product. The reason is the same, although Samsung is in this case again surprises with its functionality. At almost 2 times lower cost compared to its “big brother”, the UE55JS9000T offers the same extensive capabilities. For example, the 55-inch matrix of this is refreshed at 1200 Hz (Clear Motion Rate), which provides gorgeous picture quality. With such dimensions, the TV surprises with a variety of interfaces: CI +, MHL, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, AV, as well as 4 HDMI inputs and the same number of USB ports. Users often choose Samsung UE55JS900T as the quality, because the device can be controlled by voice and even gestures. Of course, the device can receive any types of signals, including over-the-air broadcasting of DVB-T2 and DVB-S2 formats. Fans of the South Korean giant will also be pleased with the fact that, at a more affordable cost, the monitored TV has not lost the same high-quality sound, represented by two 20 W speakers, two 10 each and a subwoofer. As a pleasant bonus from Samsung, the reviewed device pleases the mass additional functions including picture-in-picture and multi-screen mode, support for TimeShift and DLNA, child lock and 24p True Cinema.

LG OLED55C6V

6th place

If you are looking for a high-quality TV for games, but you do not need too large a diagonal, then take a look at the LG OLED55C6V. This model is equipped with Ultra HD resolution and HDR support. These characteristics make it an excellent choice for those consumers who have purchased or are about to buy a PlayStation 4 Pro game console. The OLED55C6V LCD TV operates on the basis of LG's own "axis" - webOS. It has support for DVB-T2 / S2, DLNA and multi-screen mode. Picture quality TV is complemented by an array of 4 x 10W speakers for the ultimate entertainment experience. LG 3D TV is equipped with a good set of interfaces from 3 HDMI and USB, Miracast, WiDi, Wi-Fi and other necessary inputs. An interesting video clip will tell you more:

Philips 65PUS8700

5th place

The stylish Philips 65PUS8700 curved TV stands out from its competitors with several signature features. First of all, the device has its own memory of 16 GB, which allows the TimeShift option supported here to work even without a flash drive. Separately, mention should be made of CI + support and the presence of two slots for such electronic modules at once. But most importantly, what makes a Philips home TV set apart is the Ambilight proprietary backlight that visually expands the boundaries of the screen. As for the latter, everything here is just great! Thanks to the stunningly rich and bright (400 candela per square meter) and the Perfect Motion Rate 1400 update, the user will be able to get a storm of emotions from watching videos and movies, even without 3D turned on. Also, the best TV from the Dutch manufacturer boasts a set of a subwoofer and 4 speakers of 10 W each, pure android TV, DVB-T2 / S2 support and an excellent set of interfaces (4 x HDMI, 3 x USB, Wi-Fi, Miracast, RGB, Ethernet).

The video shows the work of the proprietary Ambilight lighting:

Panasonic TX-65DXR780

4th place

In the center of the ranking of the best 3D TVs for 2017 is a model from Panasonic. The TX-65DXR780 is equipped with a 65-inch screen with a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels. The display supports HDR technology, which is getting better every month. There are two TV tuners with DVB-T2 and DVB-S2, 4 HDMI inputs, wireless bluetooth modules and Wi-Fi as well as Ethernet and 3 USB port... If this TV can impress even the most demanding user in terms of picture quality, then its sound is far from so good. It is completely incomprehensible why the manufacturer added only 2 speakers to the TOP-level device, and even those with a power of only 10 W each. But the additional functionality is very good here: the TimeShift option, digital and analog tuners, picture-in-picture, DLNA, child protection and multi-window mode.

Sony KD-65XD9305

3rd place

Reveals the TOP 3 leaders of Android TV Sony TV. As is typical of the famous Japanese brand, the TV KD-65XD9305 pleases with a picture of amazing quality. The device works with any signal sources, including DVB-T2 and S2 standards, and also supports CI +. The interface set of the reviewed device is very good and includes 4 HDMI inputs, 3 USB ports, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Miracast, SCART and Bluetooth. Additional features that it can boast of are DLNA support and 24p True Cinema, as well as child protection.

Samsung UE65JS9500T

2nd place

The second place was taken by a competing product from another South Korean brand Samsung. The UE65JS9500T model could claim the first place, but, as it was already noted above, the majority of users prefer Samsung's shutter technology to LG's polarizing one. Otherwise, this reliable TV is not just good, but a great choice! An excellent picture on a 65-inch 4K matrix is just one of the advantages of this model. A positive experience from watching any video is also provided by the sound presented by a pair of 20 W speakers, two more 10 each and a subwoofer. With such characteristics, the TV does not need any additional acoustics. The set of interfaces in the UE65JS9500T is just excellent: HDMI in the amount of 4 pieces, three USB, Ethernet, as well as MHL, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This TV in terms of price-quality ratio bypasses many of its competitors, which is not least due to additional features... For example, the TV supports CI, DLNA, 24p True Cinema, TimeShift and Picture-in-Picture. also in stylish samsung built-in camera and microphone, which provides the ability to communicate via Skype and control the device through voice commands and gestures. In conclusion, the positive qualities of the UE65JS9500T include support for DVB-T2 / S2, child lock function and the presence of a pair of independent tuners.

Three-dimensional imaging technologies are gaining popularity in the world. This includes the release of new films in 3D, and the equipment of cinemas with new technical means for watching three-dimensional films, and the development of 3D television. And if the creation and transmission of content in 3D format does not depend on us, then the purchase of a TV with such a function already depends on the buyer.

All developments are based on the characteristics of human vision. We have two eyes located at some distance from each other, usually 5-7 cm. Each eye sees its own image, this can be seen if you alternately close your eyes, looking at one picture. You will see how the picture shifts a little and you can see everything from a slightly different angle. This feature allows us to see everything in volume. Our brain, receiving two images slightly displaced, has learned to combine them into one image, but this time three-dimensional. And it seems to us that we immediately see everything in volume. In fact, the brain itself processes what it sees with its eyes and forms a three-dimensional image, that is, it perceives the distance to the object and understands the depth of space.

This is the path taken by the developers of 3D television. It was based on the principle according to which an image was formed for each eye, so that the brain would have already folded them, and we saw a three-dimensional picture.

Almost all the leaders in the production of television equipment began to master the production of 3D TVs and other equipment of this format, such as, for example, players for discs with 3D films and others. Plasma and LCD LED TVs have received the main development in 3D format. Due to technological features, 3D plasma TVs show best quality than LCD 3D TVs due to the strict requirement for matrix response time (should be less than 3 milliseconds).

All modern 3D TVs display images in Full HD quality... In this case, the video is displayed alternately for each eye and, in order to maintain the smoothness of the picture, a frame rate of at least 60 Hz is needed for each eye. That is, the total frame rate must be at least 120 Hz, and even in each frame there must be Full HD quality. Hence, such a strict requirement for the response time of the matrix, as mentioned above, it should be no more than 3 ms.

Appearance of the TV set and glasses for displaying 3D

To transmit a Full HD signal with a frequency of at least 120 Hz, HDMI 1.4 may be required. TVs may still have HDMI 1.3.

With such a requirement for video displayed on the screen, the implementation of 3D effects is possible only with the use of special glasses. Now all firms use the so-called active glasses. These 3D glasses have a built-in microcircuit and are controlled by signals from the TV using infrared radiation. Depending on the image on the screen, the glasses pass the signal only for one eye, and into the next frame for the other eye. Glasses from one brand will not work on another brand's TV.

Anaglyph glasses

For the first time, an attempt was made to obtain a volumetric image back in 1853 in Germany. The screen displayed an image in different color shades. Spectators were given glasses, the lenses of which were painted in different colors - red, blue or green. Each eye received only the image that was colored in the color of the lens on the glasses. So each eye saw only its own image, and the picture received volume.

Anaglyph glasses

But the disadvantages were so great that it was impossible to talk about the use of this technology at home. The image was very poor in color reproduction. Due to the toning of the lenses in the glasses, the picture was obtained with shades of red and blue (green). And the quality of the 3D picture was not very high quality.

Polarized glasses

Another technology where glasses filtered the image for each eye was polarizing technology. Here, the lenses of the glasses were covered with polarizing filters in the form of polarizing films. The separation of the image for the left and right eyes was obtained due to the polarization of the image. Polarization is when light waves have different directions of oscillation, in another way, the oscillations of the electric field of a light wave occur in different planes. In the cinema, two cinema projectors are used for this. Polarized glasses are used in IMAX 3D and RealD cinemas.

Polarized glasses

In glasses, the filter on one lens allows only horizontally oriented light waves to pass through, while the filter on the other lens allows only vertically polarized waves to pass through. As a result, each eye receives only its own image, and we perceive the image as three-dimensional. In order not to lose the contrast and brightness of the image when tilting the head, they began to use circular polarization. Here already one image has left polarization, and the other - right.

It is very difficult to use this technology for obtaining a three-dimensional image on a TV at home. Because of this, television manufacturers began to use it only in 2011. LG was the first to introduce its models to the 3D TV market with polarization technology with its LG Cinema 3D development. Seeing a certain interest in this technology among buyers, Toshiba, Philips, Samsung also presented their models.

The advantages of polarization technology include a high-quality 3D image with good color rendering and detail. Polarized glasses turned out to be light and comfortable without electronic circuitry. There is no cross-distortion and flicker in contrast to active technology, which is why eye fatigue is reduced.

The disadvantage is the decrease in the vertical resolution, because in the frame there is an alternation of lines for the left and right eyes.

Shutter glasses for 3D television

The most advanced technology for obtaining 3D images on TV today is the technology with active glasses. In such glasses, the lenses are closed with a special electronic circuit control, which is in glasses. The lenses consist of liquid crystals, like the matrix of a TV, and the control circuit at the right moments in time gives a signal to the crystals to transmit the light flux to the eyes alternately to obtain a three-dimensional picture. Glasses are controlled from the TV via infrared communication or Bluetooth. Most strongly this technology promoted by Samsung, Sony, Panasonic.

Because for each eye you need to submit a separate image, then in such TVs the frame rate is halved. Therefore, 3D TVs with active technology have a frame rate of 100/120 Hz. To combat image flickering, the frame rate is increased to 200/240 Hz. At the same time, the movements in the frame become more uniform and smooth.

The advantages of active technology include its reliability and perfection. Leading manufacturers have already managed to work it out and eliminate most of the shortcomings. Used by leading manufacturers of plasma and LCD TVs.

The disadvantage is glasses, which are expensive and require constant battery replacement. The lenses of the glasses block some of the light flux, so the image may appear dim at low screen brightness. The frame rate of 100/120 Hz in dynamic scenes may not be sufficient.

Glasses-free 3D TVs

Autostereoscopic 3D TVs began to appear on the market, which did not need glasses to watch surround TV. But it is difficult for them to compete with other technologies, because their price is still high and the image quality is not very high. In autostereoscopic televisions, transparent optical elements are applied to the screen. So they separate the image for each eye separately.

The first method of obtaining a stereo image in such televisions is obtained by applying a plurality of longitudinal lenses. It is called the lenticular lens method.

In the second method, a plurality of slotted holes are placed in front of the LCD matrix. This method is called a parallax barrier. Liquid crystals are used as visual barriers. Under the action of a signal, these crystals rotate and direct the light flux in the desired direction. If necessary, this barrier is turned off and you can watch regular 2D television.

A 3D effect can be achieved if the viewer is at certain points while viewing. It is good that there are many such points and several people can watch TV.

The development of autostereoscopic TVs continues, and their market share will only grow in the next five years.

The advantage of this method of obtaining a volumetric image is the absence of glasses. And the disadvantages include the choice of a certain place when viewing.

Additional Information

The signal source for 3D TVs can be a player specially designed for playing 3D discs. Also, in some countries, broadcasting of individual channels in 3D format has already begun.

Today, companies are already developing systems that allow 3D TVs to convert video from 2D to 3D in real time. For example, for such purposes, Samsung has released new processor 3D Hyper Real Engine.

Some companies talk about the harmful effects on human health when watching 3D for a long time. Especially children, the elderly and pregnant women need to be careful.

Prices for 3D TVs will, of course, be higher than for conventional LCD LED TVs. For example, a 40-inch 3D TV will cost approximately $ 2,000. Samsung TVs 9000 series (9000 series in the line Samsung is better other series) with a diagonal of 55 inches will cost $ 7,000. A 40-inch Sony TV will retail for approximately $ 2,400. For such TVs, you may need to buy separately glasses for each family member at a price of about $ 100-150 and an infrared transmitter for $ 50. You also need to buy a special player and discs with 3D films.

Development of 3D by 2014

The development of 3D television by 2014 did not make any revolutionary discoveries. The technologies already in operation are being improved. Many buyers aren't big fans of 3D video. Therefore, TV manufacturers took the path of developing screen resolution and introducing new technology OLED.

As for 3D, today technologies that require glasses are used. Glasses-free 3D has not been developed. As for the use of glasses, the active technology of forming the volumetric effect and the passive one have also been developed. For example, Samsung produces 3D TVs using only active technology. LG, on the other hand, continues to develop passive technology on its 2014 models. Philips uses both active and passive technology. Many 3D TVs have the ability to convert regular 2D images to 3D.

As for the price, more and more models of TVs of the middle class and even the budget segment are equipped with the 3D function. Therefore, prices for 3D TVs are falling.
