Linkedin is professional. Search for people and create your own network of contacts. Professional Interest Thematic Groups

Hello dear readers of the blog site! Today we will talk about Linkedin, continuing the topic of social networks, the importance of which at the present stage can hardly be overestimated both from the point of view of an ordinary user and in terms of their use as a tool to promote your website, goods or services.

Already at the beginning of the article, I partially answered the question in the first part of the title (however, the answer is already present in the second half of the title). Indeed, this is a fairly well-known network, competing in popularity with sites such as Facebook, VKontakte or Odnoklassniki (and materials about these social networks).

Its difference from the above-named resources is that there is a pronounced professional bias in Linkedin. That is, users visit this site not for entertainment, but for a very specific purpose, for example, to find a job.

Here you can chat with colleagues in a particular area of professional activity, visit (or create your own) interest groups, establish business contacts. In addition, companies use this network of professionals to create business pages and use other available tools to promote their brand.

What is Linkedin, its version in Russian, why is it needed and reviews about it

So, we, in principle, found out that LinkedIn has a pronounced professional bias, unlike other major social networks, where users spend the lion's share of their time on entertainment and idle communication.

This is not the case in LinkedIn. Everything is much more serious here, everything is created the necessary conditions in order to offer services to a potential employer, or, conversely, to find an employee with suitable skills and education for your company.

You can also establish business contacts by visiting thematic groups and communicating with colleagues in the profession, as well as increase the recognition and popularity of the company brand by creating business pages where articles, news and announcements will be published.

I will say a few words about the stories of the Linkedin network of professionals... This company was founded in 2002 and launched a year later. Its founder is billionaire entrepreneur and writer Ried Garrett Hoffman, a frequenter of the well-known Forbes magazine rating.

Not everything went smoothly at first, but during its existence, the social network Linkedin has achieved significant success. Let's say that today the number of registered members has exceeded 400 million from 200 countries of the world.

The network is available in more than twenty languages, of course, including Russian. This is quite logical, given the huge number of Russian-speaking users. This circumstance makes Linkedin's site extremely attractive for residents of Russia and the former Soviet republics.

Of course, its audience is quantitatively inferior in the Runet to the same Odnoklassniki, Facebook or VKontakte, which is quite understandable given the specialization of this social network... After all, an order of magnitude fewer people are engaged in searching for work or employees, as well as establishing business ties. Although in absolute terms, the numbers are still decent.

I think you get it in general terms, why is Linkedin needed, we will consider all the nuances of both technical and practical terms below. Home page of this resource has the following URL:

Search for people and create your own network of contacts

Even at a certain stage of pre-filling your data, a window will appear with a proposal to obtain a network of contacts, which is very important, among other things, for the general promotion of your profile. This is done by downloading address book.

If you skipped this step, but then changed your mind and decided to use this option, then, as I said, you can do this at any time in your account by calling from the drop-down menu item "Search for contacts":

Here it is necessary to keep in mind the following. If you decide to expand your network, then this has a specific purpose (business communication, contacts for the purpose of finding a job, etc.). Therefore, correctly indicate your e-mail when activating this function.

If you intend to find, say, business associates or colleagues in the profession, then enter the appropriate address Email, which is intended for business or work connections.

Otherwise, you can find people for contacts who don’t need Linkedin for nothing and their activity there will be zero. You will get a bunch of people just for show, the real benefit from such communication is zilch, such a situation may even harm you.

I don’t think we should be afraid of that. Usually large and reputable services store confidential information in secret. After that, after a short period of time, the system will give you a list of people it found from the contacts of your specified e-mail, already registered on Linkedin.com:

If you don't want to keep in touch with anyone on this list, just click Skip link... Otherwise, you can filter this list a little by unchecking the checkboxes from unwanted users, or leave everything as it is and click on the "Add contacts" button.

At the second step of the search, you will be asked to invite your acquaintances and friends to Linkedin who have not yet registered here:

Select the same principle and either skip this step (then invitations will not be sent), or select the right people and add them to your network of contacts.

Thereafter, Linkedin will, from time to time, monitor the address book created based on your specified mailbox, and when new potential users appear in it, invite you to add them to your network of contacts.

There are other ways to find the right people for professional communication. Let's say Linkedin can offer you use the system search(moreover, you can find not only new contacts, but also vacancies, companies, interest groups, educational institutions, articles or incoming messages):

For this purpose it is necessary to select the required item from the drop-down menu (for example, "People"). Then enter the first and last name of someone you know, or use the various filters in the left column to get potential colleagues with professional interests. After that, click the next search button:

If among the people found you recognize the person you want, but he is already included in your network, you can send him a message by clicking on the corresponding button on the right. Otherwise, click "Make contact". However, you should not rush and for a start it is reasonable to go to the profile of a member of LinkedIn for preliminary acquaintance:

And only after you have made sure that it is suitable for adding to your network, you can start to establish a full-fledged connection with it by clicking on the button "To set up a contact"... In this case, a standard message will be sent to him, which can be corrected by adding a few words from himself:

However, Linkedin has strict guidelines, so keep in mind the following. It is assumed that for such an invitation, you must know each other, otherwise he may indicate that he does not know you.

And then in every next case, when sending such a message, you will have to indicate the email address of the Linkedin participant with whom you wish to establish contact. So be careful and pay special attention to this aspect.

If in the process of the above described option you did not get the desired result, then you can try advanced search:

However, to activate this option including Additional information, the content of which is indicated in the right column, you need to connect at least tariff plan "Business plus"("Expand and strengthen your connections").

Here you decide for yourself whether you need it or not in the long run. Let me remind you that a month of Premium is given for free testing. You can go to the trial subscription page directly from the main menu:

Along the way, I note that on the search web page (see screenshot above) on the right side there is a link to save the results found. You can return to them at any time by clicking on the "Saved Searches" link. There is also access with saved vacancies, which we will talk about below. Option "Profile organizer" available again only for Premium.

In addition to the option described above, you can slightly redirect your efforts and look for colleagues by profession or occupation among graduates, indicating the years of study, the name of the educational institution, setting filters by place of residence, work, and also by occupation:

If you look closely at the picture, you will see that there are two options for the information content of the displayed search results. First, people with first and last names who are part of the network of contacts and whose profiles can be viewed without problems.

And secondly, users are simply labeled "Linkedin member". If you click on the picture with such a person, then you will be presented with a page with the following information:

From it it becomes clear that in order to view the data of participants who are outside the network, as well as send them messages by InMail (internal mail), again, you need to upgrade your account status (that is, purchase a Premium account for any tariff plan).

After you've collected enough contacts, you may need to organize them. To do this, go to a special page by selecting the appropriate item from the "Network" section:

After that, it will appear on the left side in the "Tags" subsection and will include those people whom you have identified in this union.

Job vacancies and companies on Linkedin

As I said, the system offers tools with which you can most likely find a decent job, of course, given your education, experience and level. vocational training... For such surveys, the top menu contains section "Vacancies":

Here, in the Preferences tab, you can customize the vacancy by using the sliders to indicate what kind of work experience you have (from intern to senior executive), as well as which company by the number of employees you prefer. It is also useful to add the region and industry in which you would like to work.

From the subsection "Open new" you will be able to edit the saved data, both separately for each item, and by going to the edit page using the link "Update settings". It is also possible to set up an alert about free vacancies by clicking on the magnifying glass icon:

Here you can choose the frequency of notifications (daily or weekly) and the method of receiving them (email and / or internal Linkedin.com notification):

After that, the system will notify you about vacancies that match your settings.

Naturally, you can manage the generated alerts by modifying or deleting them. To do this, on the same page for creating them, click on the gear icon in the upper block, and then indicate the required action:

In the meantime, while you are waiting for good news from the system about a vacancy that suits you by all criteria, you can try to find something worthwhile yourself by clicking on the vacancy search button:

If you liked any of the companies, you can go directly to viewing more detailed information about her, and here a wide variety of actions are possible on your part:

For example, under the impression of what you saw, you can send feedback through the system, immediately offer your services, by leaving a request on the company's website, send a letter by internal mail (InMail) to the person who posted this vacancy in order, say, to clarify the nuances.

Among other things, if you wish, you can simply start tracking information related to this company (subscribe to news). And finally, you are even able to assess your chances in comparison with other candidates, but for this you again need a paid account (remember, you get one for a month for free).

To familiarize yourself with potential employers when searching for vacancies, you can view the company pages created in LinkedIn. To do this, let's use the search again, only now by company:

Pick the ones that interest you and start tracking them. Then you can find all the information about them in Companies tab section "Interests":

There are two subsections there: "Home" (all the latest news) and "Follow" (a list of companies that you are subscribed to). The right sidebar contains a link to create a page for your own company. This is an analogue, however, it must be borne in mind that in Linkedin everything is much more serious.

Thematic interest groups

Using this option will have a positive impact on the promotion of your brand and your profile as a whole. First, it's better to use the same general search, where at least you can select groups in Russian:

Although, as I understand it, it is possible to use the advanced search to the full, where you could filter them by subject, is possible only when you connect one of the paid tariffs. Therefore, you will have to weed them out manually, well, or activate Premium, since you can use it for free for a month.

After you join the selected groups on the desired topic, you can view information and manage your actions in relation to them. from the "Groups" section:

In the "My groups" tab, there will be those in which you are a member, as well as groups with a request to consider your application to join it. Here you can also create your own group. Well, in the "Discover new" tab, Linkedin will offer you new groups that you can join.

Hello dear readers of the blog site. Oddly enough, Linkedin is on a par with such familiar tools as Vkontakte, Facebook or Odnoklassniki. Yes yes it is social network.

But not simple, but with a business bias... People come into it for the most part not for entertainment, but for business. What kind of cases could it be? Well, mostly looking for a job. Not necessarily urgent, but with a focus on the future, because even with a tit in our hands, we do not mind grabbing a crane in the sky.

You need to understand that this indicator will even affect the ranking of your profile in the search results of LinkedIn, and, of course, it will speak about the seriousness of your intentions to find a job.

You can configure a profile using the wizard or manually. To do this, you can go to the "Profile" - "Edit profile" tab, or add new information directly on the profile page or edit the old ones (just click on them with the mouse and you will be able to make changes). Perhaps the required minimum will look like this:

  1. Photo provocative location
  2. Activity area and geographic location
  3. Your current job title
  4. Indicate at least a couple of previously held positions
  5. Please fill in the details of education
  6. Specify five or ten skills
  7. Do not be lazy and tie at least fifty contacts for a start
  8. Indicate several groups of your interests
  9. And, of course, some general information don't forget to add

I advise you to click on the "See More" spoiler (located just below) to fill in all the available resume fields.

Customizing your public profile page

Please note that you can change the address of the page with your public profile in LinkedIn at your own discretion. For example, I have it like this:

Https://www.linkedin.com/in/ktonanovenkogoru

In principle, there is no news of what a mulka, but still. You can do this by clicking on your profile page (you can get to it by selecting the menu item of the same name from the top menu) by clicking on the button with the page address located under your photo:

And on the page that opens in the right column, you will certainly notice the button "Create a personal URL", which you do not need to click on. Everything, it remains only to enter the desired ending to the URL of your profile and the trick is in the bag.

Below you can and, if necessary, remove some of the information from the public ().

Well, just below (all in the same right column) you will be prompted to copy the code of the public profile business card, which after being inserted into the site or forum will look something like this:

Connecting, communicating and tracking vacancies at Linkedin companies

From all of the above, we can conclude that the main thing is to completely fill out the profile itself since this is actually your resume for recruiters and potential employers. Personally, of course, I cheated, but there is an explanation for that. I'm not looking for work through LinkedIn (for now, anyway), but I use it to cross-post the announcements of new articles on my blog.

My H1 content is always torn out (the same for all pages), so I have to edit the title simple click on it and entering the correct option. It is difficult for me to assess the prospects of using LinkedIn for such selfish and non-specific purposes, but let it be. Although at the same time the social network itself interested me and I decided to write this article from fresh memory.

Building contacts

When viewing someone else's profile, you can try make contact with this person:

However, in the next step, you will be asked to enter the email of this person, and without this, you will not be able to send him an invitation. Apparently, this was done in order to avoid spam. After all, this is not a Contact where you can offer friendship to everyone. That's why there are two main ways to make contacts.

With existing contacts, you can work in Address book, which you will find all in the same item of the top menu "Network":

If you want to group them, then tags will help you with this. Put a checkmark in front of those users whom you want to place in one group, and click on the "Edit tags" button. Create a tag, it appears in the left column, and when you open it, you will see the users added there. The Profile Organizer tool is available, as I understand it, only on a paid account.

Professional Interest Groups in Linkedin

As in any other self-respecting social network, here you have the opportunity to create, join and communicate in groups. Most of them are divided according to professional interests, but there are exceptions. After you complete your profile and establish your first contacts, it's time to move on. Communication in the right groups will allow you to expand your network of contacts, learn something you need on topics of interest to you and, of course, show your best side (raise your image).

To begin with, you will need to select the "Groups" item from the "Interests" drop-down menu. Here you will be presented with a list of groups that Linkedin has selected for you based on the data you left on your profile and other places on the network.

If he missed, then in the left column you will find the button "Find a group", and you can even create your own, if none of the existing ones suits you.

Group search is a variation of general search... By default, you are presented with a list of groups in your language, but you can add other languages in the filters. By the way, groups are open and closed... The first ones can be entered without any problems (by clicking on the "Join" button), but closed groups can only be viewed.

In the group you have joined, you can create messages (discussions), comment on existing ones and do other things peculiar to groups. An indicator of your activity in this group will be displayed in the right column, which can be very useful if you are serious about using LinkedIn to find work that interests you.

Company pages and job search

Actually, in addition to groups on Linkedin, there are company pages (but only much more serious). In principle, you can create a page for your company, but they in this network do not serve the purpose of communicating with potential customers or branding. Moreover, for too actively adding new information to the company page, you can get a penalty from the moderators.

On the company page, you can see a list of employees who are LinkedIn's users, as well as read news and, possibly, job advertisements. Therefore, it makes sense to click on the button located in the upper right corner "Track" to keep abreast of all updates to this page and not to miss the vacancy that has appeared.

On this page, you may also find that someone from your contacts or contacts of your contacts works or worked for this company. This can be an invaluable source of information before you submit your resume for a job. IMHO.

Naturally, you can not only fill out your profile and wait, but also try to actively search for vacancies with the funds available in this business network. There is a separate button for this. "Vacancies" in the top menu. By default, Linkedin will already select something for you based on the data you specified in your profile and the available suitable jobs (if you are an employer, then the "Post vacancy" button on the right will be relevant for you).

At the very least, it's worth checking them out. If nothing suitable is found there, then use the search bar located at the top (or the advanced search, which lives under the spoiler of the same name). If your job search is now extremely relevant for you, then you can subscribe to email alerts using the link shown in the screenshot.

In principle, I have already told all the main things, but there are some details that may be useful to you, for example, when you will be looking for a job using it.

Let's say that you decided to start looking for a new job while still on the old one (quite an optimal solution). However, if your company is represented on LinkedIn and employees have accounts there, then it is likely that (in the hope of catching a vacancy) your current employer will become aware of it.

However, this can be avoided. simple disconnection notifications about your activity on this social network. To do this, click on the icon with your photo in the upper right corner and select "Privacy and settings" from the drop-down menu:

On the page that opens, on the "Profile" tab (from the left menu), select "Enable or disable notification of your activity." A pop-up window will open where you will need to uncheck the box there and click on the "Save changes" button.

With an active job search, you yourself will most likely actively view the profiles of those people who are of interest to you in terms of search new job... This means that it is important that they, if necessary, could get information about you(there is such an opportunity in Linkedin to receive information about those who viewed your profile, if it is open for access).

Just in case, check what you have set to "Specify what others will see if you watched their profiles" (the path to this point is the same as in the setting described just above).

I also want to say that with the help of LinkedIn, you can study quite well the people who will make the decision about hiring you. By taking a closer look at them on the network, by examining the profile and other records, you can find something useful. And it's easy to show activity in the same places on the network where they showed it. Perhaps you will be noticed and remembered, which may come in handy in the future.

Even when filling out a profile, it is better not to leave suspicious gaps. Even though during this period you were engaged in affairs that were not at all related to the desired work, it is better to indicate this and describe it in detail. A holistic picture always looks better, and you don't know when and to whom your seemingly irrelevant skills will come in handy.

Good luck to you! See you soon on the pages of the blog site

Let's take an example of what LinkedIn is for.

Maxim - developer software... He ends up with a one-year contract to work in the Czech Republic and is looking for an interesting job abroad, preferably in the United States. On the advice of his fellow colleagues, Maxim registered on the social network LinkedIn - this is where American companies often look for employees. Filled out the profile, found contacts of former colleagues and classmates. Having free time, he actively participated in groups and discussions, gave advice and shared experience. Within two months I received three offers from employers to take part in the competition for the vacancy. Found a temporary remote work in a project with good pay. Continues to browse other options on the web. The portal allows you to save on the services of recruiting agencies and directly contact employers.

What is LinkedIn

This social network is for professional communication, not for entertainment. This distinguishes it from other social networks such as Facebook, Odnoklassniki, VKontakte. Here you can establish business contacts with colleagues, find vacancies. It is convenient for HR managers to find specialists to attract, and for users to keep abreast of news related to professional issues. Business pages of companies, with articles and news, thematic communication, joint solution of complex issues - all these are options for using this portal.

How LinkedIn Works

To access the service, you need the Internet and a computer. You can also enter from mobile devices- designed for convenience special applications for Android or iOS OS. They are downloaded for free from App Store or Google Play.

registration

To start using, you need to go to the site and register - create an account.

It is worth considering that this is professional communication and opportunities.

Therefore, it is advisable to provide complete information that may interest employers. And the automated search for interesting vacancies and social circle offered by the service works based on this data. There is also such a concept as "profile efficiency". It is measured in percentages from 1 to 100. The higher they are, the earlier the profile will be shown in search results.

To get the maximum, you need to fill in all the proposed fields:

  • Photo;
  • place of residence;
  • education;
  • current and two previous positions of work;
  • skills and qualifications;
  • interests;
  • Total information;
  • contacts.

There is an option "View More", which opens additional lines for filling. The profile is a resume - it contains all the required information.

Contacts

Please note that during the registration process, you are asked to provide your email address and password from it. You can skip this step. But if you specify this data, then the social network will consider all personal contacts from the mail and send them an offer to register. This can happen both immediately and after a while. Moreover, the distribution will be periodically repeated to those addressees who are not registered in the network. Such mailings can amount to spam and generate complaints.

On the other hand, however, this is one of the secrets of how to effectively use LinkedIn to connect and build your authority. If you specify your work email when creating a profile, this will allow you to communicate with partners or invite them to it. If specified mail contains only personal contacts, or access was opened due to inattention, then everything can be corrected. Mail changes in the section Account and settings. You can cancel the sending of invitations if you go to the messages that have already been sent and select the "revoke" option for each of the contacts.

How do I search LinkedIn for contacts that are important to my profile status? In this network, you will not be able to invite a person whose profiles have been seen or found according to some criteria as a friend. You will need to know his email. This is a kind of protection from the intrusiveness of unfamiliar participants.

Groups

Creating groups, joining them, communicating with members - such an opportunity is also provided on LinkedIn. Groups can be both open and closed (participation only after the administrator's permission). In them you can consult with people on various issues, help others by applying your experience, learn something new and useful. Thus, you can both get help from more experienced colleagues, and draw attention to your knowledge, interest potential employers.

If you would like to find a job in the United States, consider the geography of the group. The desired country must be specified in the filter.

Job search

This is why many people register in this network - looking for a good job or a part-time job. The service will select and offer available vacancies by itself, according to the data specified in the profile. It is enough to go to the "Vacancies" section located at the top of the page. If nothing interesting was found, you can set your own search according to certain criteria. To avoid missing out on exciting new options, set up email alerts.

If you are interested in the employer, you can go to his page, read about the company, see the list of employees. Some of them may be familiar, which will allow you to learn more about a potential place and team.

Be careful when looking for a new job if the current employer is also registered on the portal. Changes in profile status, activity and tracking of other firms and vacancies will be visible to everyone. The option can be disabled in the "Privacy and Settings" section.

Recommendations work well to grab the attention of employers. These are the reviews and characteristics that are given by colleagues and acquaintances. You can start getting them yourself - by writing a recommendation to the person you worked with. In response, you can get a review about yourself.

The same is the case with the skills that are indicated during registration. The more they are confirmed by other people, the more attractive the profile is for the recruiter.

To get your endorsements and endorsements, start rating others.

If you want to expand your opportunities, get into contacts with people who have 500 or more connections in this network. Such participants are called LIONs (LinkedIn Open Networkers). Their acquaintances are a whole world of business connections and unique opportunities.

You can draw attention to yourself:

  • publishing useful and interesting information at least once every few days;
  • adding your skills, showing growth;
  • actively participating in group discussions to be included in the list of the five most active of the week;
  • putting likes and sharing publications of others;
  • organizing your group.

Paid account

The network offers advanced functionality when purchasing a paid account on the portal.

Its capabilities:

  • you can see who viewed the profile;
  • advanced search filters;
  • saving profiles of participants in folders;
  • adding notes and additional contact information to saved profiles;
  • more detailed information about other users.

The cost of premium access is several tens of dollars or euros per month (from 24.95 USD). For an ordinary person, this amount can be high, but the functions offered are not so important. But companies, recruiters, hiring agents will appreciate them in full. It will be more convenient and easier to find the right candidate among dozens of others.

LinkedIn for business

The social network is used not only individuals... Enterprises can register in it and create their own page. In some ways, this is similar to business pages on Facebook. But the goal is not to find customers and advertise a brand. Information about the company is indicated here: employees, news, vacancies and requirements for candidates. Unnecessarily frequent updates pages can lead to blocking or deletion from the portal.

  1. It is unrealistic to waste time on entertainment - no personal photos and information, advertising and spam.
  2. The filter system allows you to find candidates with the required parameters. You can view them, select them as favorites, see activities and recommendations from other members.
  3. The likelihood that the data specified in the account is, however, much higher than in a regular resume or other social networks. The explanation is simple - the system tries to find contacts at the specified place of work and study. And the facts are confirmed by real people. It's hard to deceive this service for professionals.

Knowing how to use LinkedIn increases your chances of finding interesting job offers, partners and colleagues to connect with. This social network, unlike others, will not take away time for extraneous activities: viewing photos, advertisements, cats and other time-consuming content.

Has gained almost 350 million users - foreign users use it to exchange work news and knowledge, as well as to find work. In Russia, the network, at first glance, is not so popular - the editorial board of the CPU invites readers to discuss what LinkedIn can be used for and whether it is needed at all.

Polina Seliverstovatelecommunication company "Intellin"

Once a friend sent me an invitation on LinkedIn. On that day, my head was full of something completely different - Facebook, contacts, the desire to eat. I didn't want to waste time on something strange and incomprehensible.

From that moment - and only two years have passed - I have not noticed how familiar and familiar this network has become for me. Unidentified LinkedIn has turned into a kind and pleasant "Link".

Probably, many even then knew about this resource. But not all of them did anything about business there.

Today I dare to say: if you are B2B - it is obligatory to promote "Link", if B2C - it will not be superfluous either.

What is LinkedIn? Professional network for communication. Why is she so professional? The most valuable thing about Link is your work experience. The network itself asks you about professional achievements and education. The company in which you work, as a rule, is linked to the organization's page in "Link". This is quite convenient - the page visitor does not need to visit the company's website to understand what it is doing. Just click on the name.

Link content is also different. No, these are not boring and serious articles about economics and business development trends in Russia. Most often they write about motivation, personal development, leadership, organization of working time.

Moreover, it is a good platform for job search and hiring. There is even a dedicated premium account for HR.

Something like this has formed in my head: A bit of Facebook, a bit of HeadHunter, plus its own zest.

Why is Linkedin so interesting?

I'll start with the pros.

What can Linkedin fail to please?

  • Posts look sparse. Unfortunately, in terms of content, this has its downsides. You cannot break the text in a post into beautiful paragraphs, you cannot add more than one picture. We give light content on our page: small materials and funny pictures. If you have a different format, you will have to adjust.
  • Not that big audience. When I tried to find someone from my previous job in Link, the results were quite sad. And I think it's not about a specific company. While the service is not yet so popular, you need to look out from what is. But I'm sure this is temporary.

Taste and color

Link has other features that some will like, and some will not.

  • Activity in work time... You need to understand that Link is a professional social network. And the peak of activity here falls on working hours. On weekends, hardly anyone will watch your content, read your mega-interesting news, alas. Plan your promotion for weekdays until evenings.
  • Your profile views. This point can also be perceived in different ways. Someone thinks that the impressions of your profile views are a relic of Odnoklassniki. You constantly see your "guests" once again do not go to someone else's page so as not to light up. On the other hand, it is a professional network. Your profile views can be very helpful. For example, if you are looking for a job or if you want to make important contacts.

Finally

For me personally, Link is something very promising. For example, on VKontakte or Facebook it is not so easy to reach an interested audience. Teenagers, housewives, fakes - through these thorns, it is difficult to create truly effective advertising. Adults and serious (moderately) people gathered right there. Who perceive this social network not as "cool news and memes", but as a tool for professional development.

/ here

Questions come to me from time to time: What do they eat it with? What are the pros and cons of this network? How can you use LinkedIn effectively, and what can you use it for? I decided to collect all the questions and answers in one place, I hope this series of articles will help you figure it out.

A small preface, or why you need it at all. LinkedIn is not a fancy social network. Not bright. Not noisy. The "sleeping giant of social networks" dubbed her in the English-language press. However, despite this "quiet", LinkedIn is exerting more and more influence, linking head hunters and job seekers, recruiters, colleagues, competitors, brands and entire industries.

The average LinkedIn user spends much less time online than the average FaceBook or VKontakte user. You will not find here humorous videos, photos of cats, graffiti re-posts, stormy discussions of the status "It's raining outside the window, how to live on?" it workplace... People come here to do business. LinkedIn directors have said more than once: “Our goal is not to keep the user on our site for as long as possible. We want a person to come in, do what he needs in a few minutes, and continue his working day. "

LinkedIn has been growing slowly but steadily since 2002, it is already working in 19 languages (including Russian) and is approaching the mark of 200 million users. I think the globalization of the Internet space, as well as the current crisis with free-lance.ru, and the lack of decent alternatives will push a lot of freelancers to register on this resource. And this is good. Well, I was planning a short introduction 😉 It's time to get down to business.

First steps after registering on LinkedIn, or the Beginner's Manual.

1. Profile.

Yes Yes. Like any social network, LinkedIn starts with creating your own profile. Filling out the profile, we remember that we are here on business, and not to have fun. In order to use LinkedIn as efficiently as possible, it is very important to fill in everything in detail and in detail, to give maximum information to potential employers about your knowledge and skills.
LinkedIn has a metric "Profile efficiency", measured as a percentage from 0 to 100. The higher it is, the more seriously your profile will be taken. In addition, if you mentioned copywriting or SEO or SQL in Skills and Qualifications, then the higher the effectiveness of your profile, the more likely it is that a potential employer looking for employees on these keywords, will view your profile.
Here's a list of all the fields that LinkedIn recommends filling out for maximum efficiency:

  • Photography (choose wisely 😉)
  • Industry of operation and geographic location
  • Current position - title and description
  • Two previous posts
  • Education
  • A minimum of five skills in Skills and Qualifications
  • At least 50 contacts (more on that later)
  • Two or three interest groups (more on this in the continuation of the post)
  • General information

2. Contacts.

So, in order to get the aforementioned "50 contacts", you need to start building your network of connections on LinkedIn. If this seemed difficult to you - do not be afraid, I will now tell you how. So there are two ways, I recommend using both.
Method one. Notice an old traditional search at the top of the screen? Fine! We enter the name of the person we know, find it among the results and “establish contact”. When hitting the results page, LinkedIn shows additional search filters. By default, they are all set to "show all", which is what we need at the initial stage.

After you have added a few contacts, refresh the page and go to your profile. In the upper left corner, you will see People You May Know with several photos. If you click on the inscription - it will open full list people, some of whom will probably really turn out to be your acquaintances. We establish contact with them, continue 🙂

Where does “people you may know” come from on linkedin? Based on the information you entered (place of work, study, etc.) and existing contacts, the algorithms make assumptions. The wider the circle of your contacts, and the more information you have entered, the more accurate these assumptions will be. After all, it is logical to assume that if you work with someone in the same company, and you have ten common acquaintances, can you be familiar with him?)) But we digress, we continue:

Method two... Any modern service has a function "import contacts". Of course, LinkedIn also has it (how can you work effectively if you manually search for 100 people one by one?). Top menu >> Contacts >> Add contacts.

As you can see, you can easily and automatically transfer and add your contacts from Outlook and any email box. Be careful at this stage, and carefully look at which checkboxes are where during this process. It is not a fact that you want to include in your contacts everyone you have ever corresponded with.

After adding contacts from mail, you can go back and look at what people appeared in the list of "people you may know". After adding new contacts, the algorithm will offer more options.

3. Groups.

Groups on LinkedIn are like hangouts of interest. Places where people ask and give advice, look for jobs or workers, interact with industry peers, etc. Groups can be created as groups of graduates of any university or faculty, or groups of former and current employees of the company (not to be confused with the official website of the company!), Or broader - say, groups of workers in the N-th industry.

The group can either be open - i.e. anyone can join it, or it can be closed. In the second case, the group administrator must approve your application for membership. This is most often found among alumni groups, and in very narrow professional groups.

4. Company pages.

Many companies, especially international ones, have their own official pages on LinkedIn. Unlike similar official pages on other social media. networks, they do not serve to communicate with the audience, branding, etc. LinkedIn even officially warns fans to engage in self-promotion: "Too frequent posting of updates can also become the subject of litigation by LinkedIn, as a result of which the company page may be removed." On the company's page, you can see a list of employees, important corporate news, press releases and often - job advertisements are published 😉 You cannot “connect” with a company on LinkedIn, but you can “track” its updates.

Keeping track of a company page can be useful if it is important for you to be aware of what is happening there. Observe the industry leader, or competitors, take a closer look at potential partners. Well, most often - to receive notifications about the opening of new vacant positions)
Also, if you are going to send your resume, or are already undergoing an interview, it is useful to see if someone of your acquaintances works in this company, or worked, or an acquaintance of an acquaintance. It can be a valuable source of information at the right time, because a spoon is dear to dinner))

5. Vacancies, or Job Search.

The ability to find a job (or employees) through LinkedIn is one of the biggest perks of this network, if not the most prestigious. By clicking on "Vacancies" in the top menu, you will see "Vacancies that may interest you", which LinkedIn algorithms have selected for you, based on your personal data and open offers of employers. At the very least, it's interesting to see. Write the name of the desired position in the search bar, and you will be taken to a page with results and additional search filters. If someone from your network of contacts (direct contacts, or contacts of your contacts) works for a company that appears in the search results, this is immediately visible. There are now 80 open positions in Thailand for the position of a manager. Anyone interested?

This was an introductory tour of LinkedIn. Hopefully this article will help you get the basics, take your first steps, and use LinkedIn effectively.
I will write about other services, elements and applications of LinkedIn in the future, so if you have questions or topics that you want to know about, leave comments.
